Rule 5 Draft 2015
« on: November 12, 2015, 11:17:42 pm »
With the Rule 5 scheduled for Dec 10 (last day of this year's winter meetings), the 40-man roster must be set by next Friday in terms of protecting otherwise eligible minor league players.

Jayne of WTHB has put together a list of eligible players.

Musgrove seems a lock to be protected. Not all of Gustave, Aplin, Guduan and Paulino will get added to the 40-man but that group seems next in line as likeliest to be picked.

Roster currently stands at 37 - includes Rasmus for those wondering.

Also includes dead weight like Grossman, Hoes, Wojo, Chapman, and Peacock, although of course even if you don't plan on keeping those guys you do need at least some of those spots for MLB-ready players to fill in when needed.

I would say Jandel Gustave is a near-lock to be added as well, considering he was taken last year (but returned) and had a very nice year at Corpus, lowering his walks substantially. He could conceivably help in Houston in 2016.

Aplin will be an interesting decision. No power whatsoever but I think he could be a very useful 4th OF, with a slight chance at everyday CF/leadoff man. He had a .413 OBP this year between Corpus and Fresno, and walks more than he strikes out. He bats left but can hit lefties, doesn't hit into DPs, has outstanding instincts/routes in the OF, and can steal a bag. He certainly seems capable of helping in Houston next season, so no real harm in adding him to the 40-man in place of Grossman or Hoes, if you believe in him.

Maybe guys like Paulino and Teoscar Hernandez are being dangled as trade bait right now. Even Fontana I'd hate to lose, although he's been a disappointment. Devenski is another one that would suck to lose, but it's hard to find room for all these guys unless Luhnow's got a trade or two up his sleeve to clear some space.

With a guy like Devenski, I hope they don't put him on the 40 man.  He's 25 now and likely is far from having his shot on the major league club.  He's exactly the type of player the Rule 5 draft is made for.  It gives a guy like him at least one chance to make it on the big stage.

If the FO thinks the team needs more velocity out of the pen, Gustave is an *intriguing* option.

too soon for that, methinks, but he throws rockets.

In contrast to having only a handful of minor league free agents, the Astros have 11 of thier MLB top 30 prospects open for the rule 5 draft.  Some of them will be protected but not all of them.

Interesting to click on the link and look back at that list and see that Devenski, Teoscar and Brady Rodgers were all left exposed.

The outlook probably changes again in a few months but as of right now that's all looking pretty fortuitous...
