« on: October 26, 2015, 11:34:41 am »
Correa named AL ROY by the Sporting News.  This comes from a vote of AL players.  He got 98 of the votes. Lindor came in 2nd with 30 votes.  McCullers came in 7th with 2 votes.
Always ready to go to a game.

One nit: Why does the AL name a Silver Slugger at pitcher?
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

OK, I'm missing the joke.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Never mind.  The list I saw had Kendrys Morales listed as a pitcher, not as a DH.

There's a Warren Spahn Award?
Have they been making up new awards this year? Did I just never notice these because no Astros have been up for them in a decade?

Congrats to Carlos.   There was little doubt watching him play just a few short years ago here in eastern Iowa.   Definitely going to be fun watching him hopefully for the next 10 years.

Yeah, that's a hell of an accomplishment, especially for a mid round pick who two years ago was considered fringe.

Yup, Keuchel went from releasable due to not having an out-pitch (in the eyes of some fans) to Cy Young in 2 years.

Fantastic year, well deserved.

Keuchel had success this season because he developed an out pitch-a damn good one too. Compare Keuchel three years ago to him today. The differences are stark. Congratulations!

The thing that just breaks my brain is, a guy like Keuchel, who has good but not amazing stuff, really works on developing an out pitch and maximizing what he can throw. Then you get guys that throw 100 mph and, if they'd put in HALF the effort Dallas did, they'd be fucking unhittable.

But nope, fuck it. Here comes the ol' number 1! See if you can hit THAT, motherfucker.

There was an interesting interview with Strom on the radio this morning.  The first time he watched Keuchel throw he thought Dallas was too upright and needed to incorporate more lower body input.  Rather than just telling him that, he asked him if there was a pitcher whose delivery he was trying to emulate.  Keuchel said "Erik Bedard".  Strom said "Let's try Clayton Kershaw".

Other snippets:
- Thinks Keuchel's competitiveness is his best attribute;
- Emphasized how much Feldman's return will mean to the rotation;
- Said the Astros have lots of young starters ready or near-ready to compete for spots, but singled out Velazquez and Appel;
- He will not grow a Keuchel beard; has enough trouble growing hair.
"He hit that one right up the poop chute, Bill" - Enos Cabell

In his post-award announcement interview on MLB last night he said there were a lot of people responsible for his success. He named Strom and Brocail as well as his college coach  and said when you get good coaching and combine it with my work ethic good things happen.

Keuchel 5th (107 points) and Altuve 10th (44 points) in AL MVP voting.

Also see how individual writers cast their ballots. Drellich had Keuchel 4th and JDJO had him 8th, neither had Altuve in their top 10 slots. Writer from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram cast a 9th place vote for Correa.

Drellich and JdJO both released their ballots.  Evan had Keuchel 4th and Ortiz had him 8th.  Neither had Altuve. So they didn't get much help from home cooking.
