Kazmir over Fiers?
I would have went fiers, but maybe with the extra rest we'll get July kazmir instead of the one we've watched the last 2 months. I hope so.

Obviously I'm not used to the switch to the AL yet.

I actually didn't notice until the 2nd time I looked at the thread title.

Game 2 would actually be McCullers' day to pitch on normal rest, so Kazmir gets the nod over both Lance and Fiers. I hope AJ knows what he's doing.

Fiers can be the long man, and I do not trust McCullers after last Sunday.

Agreed re. Fiers, he's done it before.

I'm having a hard time remembering any game prior to last nights'; what was so worrisome about McCullers' outing Sunday? Not a great game, but far from a disaster. I'm guessing you're referring to something about his demeanor...

It's Kazmir in game 2.
And here I thought that's what this whole thread had been about...

Quote
In three starts against the Royals this year, Kazmir has been great. He's 1-1 with a 2.11 ERA, allowing three walks and striking out 14 batters in 21 1/3 innings. He made his Astros debut on July 24 at Kauffman Stadium and threw seven scoreless innings.
***
"We're trying to find out what's happening and why he's struggled a little bit in a couple of starts," Hinch said. "Most of it's been a pitch or two. It hasn't been an entire game necessarily. … I'm always concerned when it comes to these types of games, but to beat a team in a five-game series, you're going to need a complete team to play well, and he's going to be a part of that."

Run 1 homer shit happens

Run 2 he drops easy toss at 1st, with two outs, gives up double to fucking pitcher, balks in run

Run 3 two outs, no one on single to great hitter, wild pitches him to second, run scores on two strike ground rule double. Without wild pitch, run does not score.

He is too amped up on random Tuesday games. Not his fault he is a rookie. Sunday the pressure got him, I think.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

I'm guessing fiers goes Monday if needed and McCullers comes out of the pen.  Also the guessing the hook on kazmir will be quick

That's my guess, too. Fiers is the emergency plan if Kazmir goes south.

Thinking McCullers is that man.  Fiers game 4 and McHugh game 5 on normal rest

Throwing Kazmir seems like a real Hail Mary - more hope than realistic expectation.   But Hinch and Strom know the pitchers better than anyone.

Kazmir also has a shitload of cash riding on his post season performance.

This is why the Astros traded for Kazmir. It's not a hail mary, it's completely by design.

I know jack about constructing baseball teams and rosters, but looking at the group of Fiers/Kazmir/McCullers, I think McCullers sounds the most appealing in a bullpen role. He could come in if Fiers/Kazmir falter. If they don't falter, he can be used as a power arm that they don't currently have in the bullpen.

Hmmm. McCullers in the pen makes me think of Wainwright coming out of the Cards' pen back in '06 or '07. Could be highly intriguing.
