So, no Lowrie, Gomez or Gonzalez.  Here's to Karter starting the 2nd half power party.

At least Gattis, Carter, and Conger aren't sequential in the order.

Indeed!
After all, Ashby pronounces that, as a statistical matter, we should see some home runs tonight!

T1:

Springer lines the first pitch off the glove of the SS, single
Altuve grounds into 3U-6-3 double play...Moreland steps on the bag and Springer is in a rundown
Correa doubles to RCF...too bad about the double play, otherwise Springer scores
Gattis grounds out 6-3 on the first pitch

0 for 1 w/RISP

No score

I didn't see the pitch to Gattis. Was it chin-high?

Conger throws toward second base, in a general sense. Somehow, DeShields doesn't take 3rd in the aftermath.

Not sure, but I think it was normal height, maybe in a bit.

That was so terrible, I thought surely his hand hit Choo's helmet during the throw, but no such luck.

No, it wasn't a bad pitch, belt high on the corner...he rolled over on it a bit.

B1:

Deshields lines the first pitch into LF
Deshields takes 2B as Conger's throw sails 40 feet over Altuve's head
Choo...full count...fouls one off his nuts...walks
Fielder grounds one to where the SS should be, but you know the shift and all...Deshields scores as Rasmus throws one 47 feet high into the screen.  Choo to 3B and Fielder to 2B on the TE7
Beltre pops one just over Altuve's head, Choo scores, Fielder to 3B
Moreland hit by pitch, bases loaded
Odor, otherwise known as "chin pubes", grounds into FC, Moreland out 6U, Fielder scores, Beltre to 3B
Andrus with a bloop single to RF, Beltre scores, Odor to 3B
Andrus steals 2B
Gallo...infield in...full count...strikes out swinging
Gimenez lines out to SS

Rangers get four runs without hitting one hard, lead 4-0 after one

Oh yeah, just for fun I went back and watched a little of the game on the 29th of July against the Angels.  If you have MLB.tv, check it out and go to about the 9:45 - 9:50 mark.  Ashby said something along the lines of the fact the Rangers were out of it, and it was just a two team race with the Angels.  Thanks Ashby!!  The BBGs were listening, you prick!

If you watch mlb.tv on a computer, there's an "audio overlay" button (or something like that). I'm streaming through our Apple TV where that is unfortunately not an option.

Do you by any chance have a PS4?  You can do the audio overlay on that.  And it's usually in pretty good sync as well.

I'm going back and forth here over whether a bunt is wise when the pitcher's on the ropes like that. You get the score to 4-3, which is good, but... is it too early to sacrifice there (and yes, I imagine he was hoping for a bunt hit too)?

T2:

Rasmus walks
Carter doubles to RCF, Rasmus scores
Villar...full count...singles to LF past the diving Beltre, Carter had to hold and moves to 3B
Conger singles to LF, Carter scores, Villar to 3B
Marisnick bunts, fielded by the catcher out 2-3, but Villar scores, Conger to 3B
Springer hit by pitch
Altuve pops out F3 in foul territory
Correa bounces back to the mound

Astros score three times and cut the lead to 4-3

I really hate the Rangers.  I think I may read a text book instead.

Sad that McHugh has to really work and worry about a guy like Choo on the bases because his catcher is so pathetic

Stassi has played once since being called up??

KBME audio is in perfect synch with the video.

Yeah, I can get it for a little while but my video buffers for just a few seconds every three or four minutes or so.

Deshields flies out F9
Choo singles past the shift to RF
Fielder...full count...walks, Choo to 2B
Beltre strikes out looking
Moreland pops out F2 behind the plate

4-3 Rangers after two

I haven't had that problem yet. Also, I just discovered that the commercials are muted. I don't have to listen to those infuriating Geico commercials, the equally infuriating State Farm commercials or see the same highlights from 1982 for the forty seven thousandth time. OutSTANding!

If you watch mlb.tv on a computer, there's an "audio overlay" button (or something like that). I'm streaming through our Apple TV where that is unfortunately not an option.
I stream the games on my Samsung "smart" TV.

Rasmus singles to CF
Carter blisters one on a line in the gap in LCF, but Deshields runs it down at the wall...that ball was smoked.
Villar pops out F7

Still 4-3

Odor singles to CF...starts jawing to McHugh running down to 1B
Andrus grounds into 4-6-3 double play...nice flip and turn as Odor was right on top of Correa
Gallo walks
Gallo steals 2B
Gimenez strikes out swinging

Still 4-3 after three

Twice Altuve's had the tying run at 3B with one out, and couldn't hit one out of the infield.

T4:

Conger...full count...lines one down the LF line...1/1000th of a millimeter foul...Hinch challenging, but he's gonna lose this...doubles to RCF on the next pitch anyway
Marisnick singles up the middle, Conger limps into 3B as he's hobbling
Springer...3-1...taps one to 3B, out 5-3, Marisnick to 2B
Altuve...infield back...lines out to 3B
Correa intentionally walked to load the bases
Gattis singles to LF, Conger scores, Marisnick scores, Correa to 2B
Rasmus flies out F8

Astros score a pair and take the lead 5-4

B4:

Deshields flies out F9
Choo strikes out looking
Fielder...no shift this time...grounds a single to where Altuve was the last two at bats
Beltre doubles down LF line, Fielder comes all the way around from 1B and scores without a throw as Correa bobbles the relay

That's it for McHugh, Thatcher in

Moreland...full count...grounds out 4-3

We've played 2 hours and 4 innings...tied 5-5

I didn't see it, but I can't imagine that there could possibly be a double that scores Prince Fielder from first.

Fielder isn't a slow as he looks, and if you don't hit the cutoff man, anyone can score on a double.

Can't help but think Valbuena makes that play on Beltre.

Valbuena's not hurt from getting hit yesterday is he?  I hope he just isn't in because it was Holland pitching.

I saw some bullshit on Twitter today about how Lindor is favorite for ROY because "defensive metrics don't like correa." Or something. Whatever that means.

No, but it was common for some joker to put Ben Gay on your jock strap.  We used it as hazing...Roger Clemens used it for motivation.

Gattis...full count...strikes out at a pitch that bounces in the lefthander's batter's box

Ohlendorf out, Freeman in

Rasmus...full count...walks
Carter strikes out swinging on a check swing
Villar grounds out 5-3

Three hours in, we're finally at the stretch...5-5 game

Remember at the beginning of the season when they were talking about how the new rules were shortening the games?  I haven't heard much talk about that since May or so.

Beltre grounds a single up the middle
Moreland flies out F7
Odor singles to RF, Beltre to 2B
Andrus...swings at strike three, but for some unknown reason they don't call it, and the Astros won't appeal...grounds into 5U-3 double play, Beltre out 5U

According to Evan at the Chron

Quote
Castro could comeback at less than full speed

Jason Castro (right quad strain) might be activated from the disabled list this series without being able to run at 100 percent. He’s not a fast runner to begin with, as he jokingly pointed out Tuesday.

“He’s got to do more and more and more activity,” Hinch said. “We’re going to have to make a determination how comfortable we are activating him at less than 100 percent speed wise. It’s very hard to ask a player to govern himself on the field and play less than 100 percent. In this instance, as a catcher whose speed is not his forte, we may ask him to do that.”

Tolleson in

Altuve chops one to 3B, but Beltre bobbles it and the throw is offline...E5
Correa grounds into FC, Altuve out 4-6
Gattis grounds into FC, Correa out 4-6
Rasmus bounces out 3U

Still 5-5...Astros will now have to get 6 more outs to win

Fielder is out of the game, a double really does have a chance for a score.

B9:

Fielder punches a single to LF on a fastball after looking silly on four straight sliders

Perez out, Harris in

Stubbs in to pinch run, so he'll be on 2B after a couple of pitches
Beltre singles to CF as Colby was playing nearly against the wall, Stubbs to 3B
Moreland, infield in...sac fly, Stubbs scores

Game over, Rangers now in first place

Colby had a rough night in the outfield.  An error led to an unearned run, missing the cutoff man cost a run, and an unspectacular 9th in CF

That was an amazing and unexpected run by the Astros, first place from the beginning until the fifteenth of September. They'll never see first place again this season I don't think, nor do I think they'll see a wild card berth. But it will be interesting to see what the FO does to correct the offensive woes that have mocked a very good pitching staff.

Well, the Astros made it to September 25th in first place.  Now if they can just finish above .500, it'll be a solid year.

Stolen from another forum:

Quote
Since July 3rd, the Astros are 29-33....but with a +40 run differential, one that would expect them to have gone 36-26.

Houston's first 72 games: 317 runs scored and 279 runs allowed. PYTHAG RECORD: 41-31. ACTUAL RECORD: 41-31.
Houston's NEXT 72 games: 311 runs scored and 246 runs allowed. PYTHAG RECORD: 44-28. ACTUAL RECORD: 36-36.

Something something clutch something... Yuck.

And in other news, this bullpen is totally gassed.

It'd be nice to have a DH who could hit more consistently and didn't go through prolonged stretches of not being able to drive a run in.  But I'd just settle for an average first baseman.

I forget we have a DH.  Though soon enough everyone will have one.

It seems to me they need two more good hitters in the lineup to be consistently successful.
