Wow...another fantastic blue star play by Correa, that Valbuena almost fucked up. He's a mess at 1B

I'd have to see a replay, but I think that when that ball was hit Valbuena took off toward SS, and then had to retreat, which is why he was in such bad position. But we're playing two guys out of position tonight (Gonzalez and Valbuena), and I won't be surprised if/when i bites us.

Good to see the RISP performance continue.

Good to see the RISP performance continue.

0 for 2 with RISP in the first inning.  Mid-game form.

regarding Ashby and Brown talking about the Rangers:  I remember Ashby mocking the Rangers for "thinking they still had a chance" when Texas made the Hamels deal.

Looking at the replay, it looks like Valbuena forgot he was supposed to cover 1B, and was desperately scrambling to find the bag, going "oh shit" as the throw is coming at him.

If Gomez, Rasmus and Gattis all went to the plate that inning without a bat, the Astros would have the bases loaded and nobody out. Instead, it's a a quick 1,2,3 inning.

He might...but not because of that walk and getting thrown out running on a 3-2 pitch.

I like it. I think it's been employed properly, and I like the fact that there's a chance to rectify calls that are obviously wrong. I don't know why it sometimes takes so long, but maybe there's only one crew in NY and they sometimes get deluged with concurrent calls. I also think it's fun to watch the overturn numbers confirm what we all know about which umpires suck.

B3:

Valbuena drives one to the wall in LF, but Sizemore is there with a leaping catch
Castro singles to RF
Altuve bunts, called out at 1B...challenge...reversed...it's a  single, Castro to 2B
Marwin doubles down LF line....Castro scores, Altuve to 3B
Correa...with the infield in...strikes out swinging
Lowrie strikes out swinging

So they're now 1 for 5 with RISP, stranding runners at 2B and 3B with one out, but manage to plate a run, now lead 1-0

T4:

Loney grounds out 3U
Forsythe singles to LF, past a diving Correa
Cabrera grounds to SS, Correa bobbles it and goes to 2B, but it costs a double play, Forsythe out 6-4
Nava hits a screamer off of Feldman, Correa grabs it in shallow RF, stumbles, but gets the throw off, picked by Valbuena.  Score it 1-6-3

Mid 4...Astros up 1-0

Castro strikes out swinging.
Altuve pops out F4
Marwin strikes out swinging.  That's seven of the last nine hitters punching out.

1-1 after five.

To be fair, Valbuena didn't give Altuve a chance to catch that one, as Altuve was 30 feet from the bag.

T6:

Longoria with a swinging bunt on the first pitch...no chance for Lowrie
Loney grounds into FC, Longoria out 3-6.  A good throw gets two, as Loney wasn't really running, but it was all Correa had to catch it
Forsythe singles to RF on what should be a routine double play ball, but the shift...I think every hit but the HR should have been outs except for the shift
Cabrera pops out F5...infield fly called
Nava grounds into FC...Loney out 5U as he runs out of the baseline

Still 1-1

Feldman is pitching his ass off. Fucking offense.

Who would have thought adding Gomez and getting Lowrie back and this team would be so anemic.

T7:

Kiermaier singles to CF,
Casali pops to shallow CF...Correa and Gomez collide for a double...Kiermaier to 3B
Jaso strikes out swinging
Sizemore walks, all close pitches as Feldman was really careful with a base open
Longoria grounds to SS, high throw from Correa takes Altuve off the bag, and he has to go back to tag the bag...Sizemore out 6-4, but Kiermaier scores
Loney grounds out 4-3

Rays grab the lead 2-1

That was not an easy throw.  He's going hard to his backhand side, throwing back having to rush to try to get two.  He didn't make a spectacular play that time.  It happens.

Yes, because after you've brought your lefty in to face three straight righties, the IBB is DEFINITELY about the matchup, not the double play, Ash.

B8:

McGee in for the Rays

Altuve, the only Astros to not strike out so far...with a leadoff single up the middle
Marwin singles to LF, Altuve to 2B
Correa doubles to LF, Altuve scores to tie it up, Marwin to 3B!
Lowrie...with the infield in...strikes out swinging
Gomez...intentionally walked to load the bases
Rasmus grounds the first pitch into 3-2-3 double play.

2 for 10 with RISP

Astros waste opportunity after opportunity, but manage to find a blind squirrel and tie it up 2-2 headed to the 9th.

B9:

Gattis takes ball one and ball two that are 47 feet off the plate, then swings at ball 3 and grounds out weakly 6-3
Carter, pinch hitting for Valbuena takes a meatball for strike three...imagine that
Castro draws a 2-out walk, Marisnick in to pinch run

Pitching change for the Rays...McGee out, Boxberger in

Altuve flies out F9 at the wall in RCF

Extra innings

Any single, walk or error is a double.

Wait, is Conger having trouble throwing?

Marisnick stays in to play RF, Rasmus to LF, Marwin to 1B and Conger behind the dish

Sparks preluded it perfectly by talking about how dialed in Marwin looked and how well he was seeing the ball. If only my pop up notification alerting me to the home run hasn't been running just ahead of the PBP.   Pretty sweet win for the good guys.  Feldman playing the role of the rock no less.

It's funny to me.  You write this and so many others agree.  Yet so many write (not saying you do) about how bad it is that the Astros' brass treats players as objects not people when it seems that treating Carter like a person is exactly what is going on.  It also makes me wonder if he is bringing something positive to the clubhouse that no one is writing about or perhaps knows about.

I seriously doubt this factors into the decision.  Let us not forget that no matter what happens he makes 4.18 million this year.

I think he is still here on hope.  I remember reading raves about his work ethic last year.  And I know Hinch has stated something about if he gets hot he could carry the whole team.  Given those two factors it is conceivable that they have/had hopes of him turning his game around even with a reduction in at bats and delivering the team to the post season and beyond.

The problem is he can't get hot.  This is late August, not April.  In July and August, he's hitting .117 and slugging .264 while failing to make contact 30% of the time.  That is simply unacceptable for that long.

It is hard to get hot sitting in the dugout. And I am not advocating that he should be playing.

He's doing far less damage on the bench.  And again, this isn't April or May...or June or even July.  You can't wait and hope he'll "turn the corner" in the last 40 games of the season.  That's like hanging on to a 36-year old "prospect", because you're hoping he has a high ceiling.

Last year they said his turn around came from extensive work in the cages.  I have to assume they believe he can turn it around without playing most everyday.

Yesterday, they interviewed Evan Longoria before the game, he said great things about Carter and Altuve as teammates on the Japan tour last off season.
