Here's a blog from The Guardian, that includes some amazing photos and unbelievable video footage.  The dashcam video is insane.

I heard a report on NPR this morning that there were something like 40 dead and 500 injured, according to Chinese state reports.  From the pictures that doesn't seem very credible.

State reports, so add a 0 to each of those.

At least. They said the port butts up against residential areas, and buildings were severely damaged 6 miles away. Google Earth shows it very densely populated right outside the port. Lucky it was overnight, as many office buildings inside the port were blasted, but not likely occupied when the explosion blew.

Beyond whatever exploded, they had unknown but large quantities of sodium cyanide and toxic industrial solvents in the part that exploded.  Those could be deadly depending of if the winds were onshore or offshore.

This is the dash cam video Limey mentioned: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfXmG3GdAig

If you look in the upper left, towards the end, you can see very large burning chunks of something hitting some high rises about 20 stories up. Hopefully those were office buildings and mostly unoccupied at the hour.
