If Altuve is going to hit 3rd, he needs to put the fucking ball in play. I am more pissed at his wild flailing than Mark is at Carter.

This one is certainly shaping up to be a disaster. I guess Hernandez will get some work.

Cheap stunt by the HP ump. Clearly going after Obie for the 1st inning.

By the umpire?  Obie clearly threw at the hitter. He should be run.

Since when do they run guys w'o a warning? He didn't throw at the head. There wasn't a Houston guy hit that he was retaliating.

Oh come on. Their was clear intent the next pitch after a home run. That's chickenshit by Obie and he was rightfully tossed.

He did it on purpose. But the umpire had the discretion to issue a warning, he didn't because he was already pissed at Obie for his questionable facial expression the previous inning. The ump clearly is too emotional to be back there.

That pitch was less dangerous than the high inside ball that Tanaka threw to Correa. Go talk to him, give him a warning, whatever, but just shooting out of the gate and ejecting him was over the top.

I'm not absolutely certain he was trying to hit him; he definitely was trying to move him off the plate, but there's a difference. The previous batter reached across the plate to pull a change.  That probably pissed him off.

Way to go Carter. Let's get some more here.

Oberholtzer didn't fuss at the umpire, he just gave him a dirty look, to which the umpire unprofessionally pulled his mask off like a little bitch to glare back at the player.

I think there's a problem with your club when your first baseman is hitting eighth. Either that, or it's an unfathomable juggernaut.

And then, of course, Carter hits an RBI double.

Neither participant showed much professionalism in that incident. But the umpire is supposed to be the grownup in the room.

He wasn't running on the pitch, but he runs well. Altuve was far enough away to turn and throw that overhand with a little something on it. Correa was almost already past the bag waiting on the soft toss.

Back to Appel, he gave up two 2bs, a 3b and a HR in three innings. Crap.

Time to move him up.

Doesn't seem quite so insurmountable now. Maybe they'll get going now.

The Copa America game between Brazil and Paraguay has those damn trompe l'oeil ads on the goal line that look like a raised sign right up until a guy runs over them. It's very jarring visually.

It's not Arabic. I assume it's Japanese, what with Tanaka pitching.

Not watching, listening to Ford and Dierker. Both said it was a good call. It wasn't a "neighborhood" play, it was like a force at 1B and Altuve simply never got his foot on the bag.

It wasn't a double-play because of the dirty slide. Altuve was going to throw to first up until the Yankmee TyCobb'ed him in the ankle.

Correa should have thrown that ball right between the runner's eyeballs on that double-play.

Well the ump didn't. You can't challenge a double play pivot "neighborhood" play.

Again, Ford/Dierker saying it was as straight on a slide as is possible. Not even a minute chance to get him on going out of the baseline.

Again, Ford/Dierker saying it was as straight on a slide as is possible. Not even a minute chance to get him on going out of the baseline.

The slide wasn't out of the baseline. Altuve was jumping, and Gardner (or whomever) intentionally went with a high foot, and then raised it even higher to make sure that he hooked Altuve's ankle, and then pushed even *higher* to make sure that he upended him. Altuve was three feet in the air, it's not like Gardner couldn't have avoided him easily.

So they're not going to call it, and I guess that's just the way it is. But if that's the way it's going to be, I hope the Astros go into 2nd really hard for the rest of this series. And I hope that Correa low-bridges everybody coming into second base.

It sure looked like Altuve's right foot was on the bag with the ball in his glove.

It probably wasn't, but it was really close. Ask yourself this question: if Jerek Deter is making that play, what do you think the call would be?

It looked to me like Altuve's right foot touched the back of the bag, just got a toe on it but Joe West just didn't see it, but it is all academic.

Wasn't just Joe. The derps in New York didn't see it either. Imagine that.

Obie optioned to Fresno. Corresponding move forthcoming.

Listening to Hinch, sounds like you are correct. He seemed pissed, apologizing left and right about how that's not the Astros way, that Obie threw at Arod.  I suppose it could be that the pen is overworked and they just need a new arm, but I get the impression they are sending a message to Obie.

This is more or less how I saw it too. Bush league Kung-Fu slide by Gardner, bullshit call by Joe West/replay umps, unless my understanding of the rule on a DP attempt is totally wrong. AND the hpu might have squeezed Neshek a bit too, though that was far less egregious.

Oberholtzer lost control of his emotions, then showed his ass by staring down the HP ump. The ump compounded the issue by showing his ass back when he removed his facemask and stared back at Obie. Then Obie forgot where he was and what he was suppose to be doing, got totally caught up in the moment, and lost his mind.

At the time I didn't think he needed to be run, but in hindsight, the ump probably did the Astros a favor, because at that moment Oberholtzer was in no shape mentally to continue. Some guys get pissed off and they gain focus, others get pissed off and they become scatterbrained. I like Obie and think he can be a good pitcher but he needs to learn how to control his emotions, that's been his biggest deterrent and will continue to be until he figures it out. Maybe he can figure that out in Fresno.

...Altuve was going to throw to first up until the Yankmee TyCobb'ed him in the ankle....

That was some bush league BS by Gardner. What an ass... Nice to see his karma'esque contribution to Correa's Little League HR in today's game!
