Home runs by Gattis and Valbuena make it a 2-0 Astros lead

That's the most Astros inning possible. 2 homers and 3 K's

Given that a lot of grounders off Keuchel aren't well hit, I wonder if the over shift makes as much sense with him on the mound.

Bold play there by Carter, getting the lead runner.

B2:

Cruz walks
Seager hits what should be a tailor made DP, but that damn shift...base hit
Trumbo grounds into FC, Cruz out 3U,

Keuchel getting frustrated with Castro

Morrison grounds into FC, Seager out 3-6 at 2B, runners at the corner with 2 out
Zunino walks to load the bases

Keuchel and Castro still can't get on the same page

Miller walks, forces in a run as Seagel scores
Jackson walks to force in another run.
Smith grounds out 6-3 to end it

But the Mariners tie it up on one single that was a routine grounder to SS.

After two...we're tied 2-2

Fuuuuuuuck. I mean, you kind of expect that Cruz will get you once in a while. It's the two fucking walked-in runs that are deflating.

Yeah, giving up two runs without them putting a ball in play is not a formula for success.

T7:

Rasmus punches a swinging bunt just past the pitcher for a single
Carter strikes out looking

And out come McClendon, and that's it for Walker, lefthander Nuno in

Valbuena walks, Rasmus to 2B
Marwin singles to LF, Rasmus scores, Valbuena to 2B
Santana pinch hits for Castro...

That's it for Nuno...Rodney in

Santana called back for Conger, so two pinch hitters used here...

Conger breaks hit bat on a 2-0 pitch, out 3U, Valbuena to 3B, Marwin to 2B
Springer with a check swing on the first pitch, grounds out 6-3, leaves two RISP

So Rodney comes in and gets two outs without throwing a strike, but Astros get a run to make it 5-3

There was a power hitting catcher for Baltimore who's name I don't recall that set the record for fewest RBI (40) with at least 20 home runs. Valbuena's pretty close to that with 31 and 17.

B7:

Sipp in for the Astros

Jackson walks
Jones, pinch hitting for Smith, tries to bunt but pops out to Sipp
Jackson move to 2B on a wild pitch, and a piss poor blocking job by Conger
Cano, who owns Sipp in his career... singles to RF on the next pitch after the wild pitch, Jackson scores

And that's all for Sipp, Fields in

Cruz flies out F9
Cano moves to 2B on a wild pitch and piss poor blocking job by Conger
Seager grounds out 4-3 to end the inning

M's pick up a run to extend lead to 6-3

This home plate ump had been fucking brutal this inning. Called 3 shinners strikes including a shinner that was also outside on Correa.

T8:

Correa strikes out looking on a pitch at his ankles and three feet outside
Tucker hits on that came within a 1mm of the RF pole, then singles
Gattis singles, Tucker to 2B

That's it for Lowe, Furburger in

Rasmus strikes out looking

Furburger out, Smith the closer in

Carter, looking a mess, as he grabs the Golden Sombrero on a pitch that the catcher had to dive to catch.

Horrible. That call against Correa would have seen me thrown out. And I don't really understand why Hinch got so worked up over a clear case of fan interference.

Yeah, I lived in DC during a lot of Hoiles' tenure and then I moved to NYC so I saw quite a bit of AL East baseball back in those days.

Fuck you, Carter. That was absolutely pathetic.

Carter is hilarious. Blum gently suggests that the 2-0 fastball over the plate that he took JUST MIGHT have been the pitch that a real RBI guy might have looked to drive.

At least he really flashes the leather on defense.

Maybe Seattle hacked into GC and introduced some malware into their shift data.

B8:

Qualls in

Trumbo breaks his bat, as Rasmus makes a diving grab in shallow CF
Morrison bounces weakly to SS, but that fucking shift means there's nobody there...single
Morrison steals second as Conger drops the ball
Zunino strikes out
Miller grounds out 4-1

Heading to the 9th...Astros chasing 3

Carter has whatever the opposite of killer instinct is. The potential of infinite power is completely offset (for me) by the fact he just doesn't even seem to care a little bit. Huge moment in the game and he just completely shits the bed.

The doesn't care idea has been floated frequently. Maybe he doesn't. But I doubt that seriously. He's not so freakishly talented that he can get by not caring while holding down a job as a major league player. No, he does not show his emotions. But I think he probably cares quite a bit; he just isn't very good.

T9:

Valbuena, quickly falls behind 0-2 and punches out...15th on the night
Marwin grounds out 4-3
Conger grounds out 3-1

Game over

I don't even know where this idea comes from.  Conger is pretty awful at framing pitches.  Where he got the reputation of being a good receiver is a mystery that rivals the Lost Colony of Roanoke.

Corporan is straight-up better in every way. Quintero probably is, too.

Q is not the hitter Conger is, but Corporan is.  They gave up prospects to get worse at a position that wasn't a particular problem.  Corp was a perfectly acceptable backup catcher.  Not one of Luhnow's smoother moves.

Hinch explaining his peeve...he acknowledged the fan interfered, but didn't think it was right to assume it would have been a catch.  He's not without a point.

In what context can you not assume that the fly would have been a catch? Matt Dominguez is a Brewer, not a Mariner.

I never understood that trade either ,but Corporan is hitting .169/.240/.270 this year which is a lot worse than Conger's .213/.322/.427. Carlos Perez is at .264/.278/.379 all in 27 games each.

In the context that he was running full speed crashing into a wall. It wasn't an "ordinary effort" play, and far from a given that Miller catches it.

The problem with Conger is not his hitting, though it's nothing to write home about. The problem is he's awful defensively.

I suspect that one of those college catchers that they drafted this year will be on a fast path.

Yep, this move really pissed me off (and I bet they'll wish they had Tropeano as another staring option by the end of the year...).
