Springer leads off the game with a single to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. He has really adapted to the lead off role.

Well, there goes the ball, too. Correa with a deep homer to left for a quick 2-0 lead.

Carter with a two-out double to the right field fence, but Valbuena can't get him in. Astros lead 2-0 in the middle of the first.

Tulowitzki with a single, but Obie gets out of the inning when Marisnick (or whoever is in center) runs down a long drive in center.

Sorry, took some time off to eat bite of dinner. Springer drove in Castro with a two-out single in the top of the 2nd, and Obie kept the Pebbles scoreless in the bottom. Tucker was just barely thrown out by Arenado to start the top of the 3rd, and Carter followed up with a deep fly-out to the track in CF. Valbuena grounds out to 2B to end the top of the 3rd.

Middle of 3, Astros lead 3-0.

Barnes flies out to Tucker in LF.
Kendrick flies out to Marisnick in CF.
Blackmon hits a ball up the middle that bounces off of Obie's glove and goes for a hit.

Blum, for some inexplicable reason, brings up the Walt Fucking Weiss play. Asshole.

Blackmon steals 2B. Hinch comes out to argue, apparently arguing for batter's intererence? No, he's arguing that Blackmon came off the bag while Correa still had the glove on Blackmon. Off to review, and Hinch's protest is upheld.

Astros lead 3-0 after 3 innings. Obie has thrown something like 33 pitches.

Altuve has been lifted for Marvin after looking very gimpy in not running out a ground ball. I think he's headed for the DL.

Marisnick flies out to LF.
Castro hits the ball hard but right at 1B for a 3U.
Obie is the beneficiary of a close call and walks, setting the stage for Springer.
Springer rips a line drive into LF, runners on 1st and 2nd. That's three hits for him, I think.
Correa hits a solid liner but right at Barned in LF.

Astros lead 3-0 in the middle of the 4th.

LeMahieu hits a chopper between SS and 3B for a single.
Tulowitzki doubles to RF, LeMahieu to 3B.
CarGo lines out to Tucker in LF. LeMahieu tags and scores. Tucker's throw looked decent, but it was cut to keep Tulo at 2nd, which was probably the smart play.
Arenado drives a single up the middle. Marisnick makes a strong throw toward the plate, but Carter cuts it and catches Arenado between 1st and 2nd. Tulo scores. Blum and Ashby wanted Carter to let the throw go through, but I thought it was drifting up the 3B line a bit.
Rosario strikes out.

End of the 4th, Astros lead 3-2. Lost track of Obie's pitch count, but he probably threw 20-25 that inning.

If the cut isn't directed by the catcher as silence=no cut and cut=cut, how else might it be done?

Gonzalez (in for Altuve) flies out to RF.
Tucker hits the ball to Boulder for a HR. Well, maybe just to the bullpen.
Carter misses a hanging curve (no way!), then pops up to 1B.
Valbuena flies out to LF.

Middle 5, Astros lead 4-2.

Hundley pops out to 1B. Springer and Carter a little too close to the same spot for my tastes.
Barnes flies out to Tucker in LF.
Ynoa (pinch-hitting for Kendrick) strikes out.

Very quick inning for Obie. I think he's at 56 pitches now.

After 5 innings, Astros lead 4-2.

Friedrich in to pitch for the Rocks. LHP, 4.33 ERA, 1.37 WHIP.

Fucking Cubs beat the Tribe 17-0.

Marisnick heard the talk about Kemp and decided to do something about it, banging a homer just left of center (out near the 415 sign).
Castro singles to left CF.
Obie with the sac bunt to move Castro to 2nd.
Springer chops to Tulo at short, who throws him out. Castro holds at 2nd.
Correa seemingly hits the ball off his fists and winds up with a rule-book double in RF. Castro scores.
Gonzalez hits a hard ground ball up the 3B line, but Arenado's going to be an All-Star for a good reason.

Middle 6, Astros lead 6-2.

Well, there goes the ball, too. Correa with a deep homer to left for a quick 2-0 lead.

I heard CC's HR at 450 ft.  I just read that he has been clocked at eleven balls hit since coming up at 100 MPH+.  I guess that's pretty good.

Blackmon doubles off the wall in LF, played well by  Tucker. That beard can't be comfortable, can it?
LeMahieu strikes out on a great inside pitch. Off the plate, but nasty.
Tulo takes the first pitch in the same place and guess what? It's a ball. Tulo pops out to Tucker in LF on a hanger, and he's pissed.
Strom out for a mound visit, tells Obie to quit throwing the ball in the middle of the zone.
CarGo flies out to Marisnick in right CF.

After 6, Astros still lead 6-2. Obie at 73 pitches.

Tucker with a couple of HR-distance fouls to LF, and then strikes out on a pitch in the dirt.
Carter strikes out. I hope Mark Raup wasn't watching that one.
Valbuena flies out to Barnes on the track in left CF.

Arenado grounds a double down the LF line.
Rosario grounds to Correa, who chases Arenado back to 2nd and throws out Rosario.
Hundley works the count full, then hits a sharp ground ball that Valbuena deflects past Correa. Tucker picks it up and makes a terrible throw toward home that doesn't get the runner and can't get cut, so Hundley moves on to second. That's the end of the evening for Obie.

FIELDS! on to work his magic.

Barnes pops out to Springer in RF on the first pitch.
McKendry (pinch-hitting for Friedrich) grounds out 4-3 on the second pitch. Fire extinguished.

After 7, Astros lead 6-3. Obie in line for the win. I hope Fields comes back out for the 8th. Unless he's in the dugout for half an hour because the Astros are scoring 8 runs.

Justin Miller in to pitch, just called up from Albuquerque.

Marisnick grounds out 5-3. Arenado is really smooth.
Castro singles to RF.
Gattis (pinch-hitting for FIELDS!) hits a chopper that bounces about 30 ft in the air and is just out at 1st 1-3. Castro to 2nd. Call reviewed and upheld.
Springer misses three hittable balls and strikes out.

Middle 8, Astros lead 6-3.

Thatcher in to relieve FIELDS!

Blackbeard strikes out swinging. That's the only batter for Thatcher; Neshek coming in.
LeMahieu flies out to Springer on a ball that carried a lot farther than it looked like it would.
Tulo strikes out looking on some beautiful pitches by Neshek.

After 8, Astros lead 6-3.

Axford on to pitch. Brings another of these fucking beards with him. In 30 years these guys are going to look at pictures and laugh the same way I laugh at my plaid pants and sport coats from the 70s.

Correa gets a little chin music, and then hits a ground ball up the middle, only to be thrown out by Tulo on a really nice play.
Marwin doubles down the LF line.
Tucker up. Gonzalez steals 3rd on a 1-1 pitch, but Tucker winds up striking out.
Carter misses a fastball right down the middle, and then hits a breaking ball to Qualls in the bullpen for the Astros' fourth homer of the night.

That's the end of the night for Axford and his beard. Boone Logan on to relieve him. He also has a beard, but his can't double as a nest for homeless birds.

Valbuena walks.
Marisnick lines out to Tulo.

Going to the bottom of the 9th, Astros lead 8-3.

Qualls in. No longer a save situation.

CarGo absolutely destroys a ball to RF. Qualls making me queasy.
Arenado flies out to LF.
Rosario flies out to RF.
Hundley hits into the shift 4-3 for the final out.

Astros win 8-4!

Yeah, Ashby said clubs might do it other ways, but I can't figure how.

Some coaches want the catcher to say something...never silence.  There may also be preferences on the cutoff man cutting on his own.  This would be situational...score, inning, outs, etc.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

I can't remember a single coach who didn't instruct the catcher to provide information about how he sees the throw coming in, but the call was the cutoff guy. Carter probably just failed to accurately assess the trajectory and direction of the ball and cut off a throw that was on-target.

not me. the catcher made the cut/let it go call.

I must admit that I didn't pay that much attention to it, but I always wanted the catcher's input to be given because he was the target and was in the best position to determine whether the ball was on target. I just knew that I needed to be backing someone up at that time and not making any such calls myself

I always made calls as the catcher.  Silence is confusing, so I always wanted to make a call of some sort...cut or go.  However, there are times when the cutoff man has the authority to cut it off on his own.  This would, of course, be situationally dependent, such as last night's 4-run lead and you've got an easy out at 2B to prevent a bigger inning.

I thought the throw last night was going to be right on the money, and they definitely had a shot at the plate.  It's one I would have liked to have seen go through, and it appeared Castro wanted it to as well.  But cutting the ball and getting the easy out at 2B is not indefensible in that situation either.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.
