2015 Draftees and Status
« on: June 08, 2015, 06:00:03 pm »
In order to keep separate pre- and draft/post-draft threads, the '2015 Draftees and Status' thread is now open (conversely, the '2015 Draft thread’ is now closed)...

Holy crap, I forgot Selig retired. We'll see if this guy can pronounce Los Angeles correctly.

Well he butchered Andre Dawson's name, so that's a good start.

Thanks!  (FWIW, my somewhat 'missing in action' status around the boards as of late can generally be attributed to being otherwise preoccupied bwith preparing for Baby Boy OSF's ETA on 8/1/15... ).

Think I read somewhere that teams in the 1st round can take between 3.5-4.5 mins to make their pick this year, anyone know about that?

If he hits as expected he'll be a very fast riser.  They'll likely have to figure out what to do with him relatively quickly.

I guess he could, but that would reduce his value.  I mean, I don't think anyone views him as a slugger, and he isn't playing center.

Wonder if there was some last-minute haggling with Boras/Cameron that didn't go well. Cooper seemed positive.

I don't get the Bregman hate? He's a very good hitter and doesn't strikeout. He's also a good athlete. 36 walks and just 21 strikeouts. Exactly the kind of hitter this lineup could use in the future. Nothing wrong with a college career slash of .334/.407/.514.

He seems to be regarded as a potential high OBP guy who's hard to strike out. Sounds great to me.

Very good hitter?  I think that is the debate.  Not sure we can say that with certainty. And there are probably a ton of guys with that slash line in college.

It's not hate.  It's just a lack of excitement.  Personally, I prefer guys that are getting better year over year.

2015 - 312/406/534
2014 - 316/397/455
2013 - 369/417/546

He's worthy of a top 10 pick.  Just seems more like a money savings pick at 2 though.  He'd likely have been there at 5

I like the Tucker pick, primarily because he's purported to be better than big bro who I've really enjoyed watch hit this season.  Plus, a little sibling rivalry is always a good thing -- like the Uptons in Atlanta. . . Right?

Yep. Breg/Daz/Tucker were 4/5/8 on BA's ranking.

Slight chance Braves take Cameron? They do have multiple earlyish picks, but finding $5m would require punting some.

Legal to tell Boras that Daz has 5 million waiting for him at #37 if he avoids getting drafted?

Have they done an on-air interview with Bregman or Tucker tonight? (not that they are typically very revealing...)

This is looking more and more like a predraft deal by Luhnow.  Let's go for three top 10 guys by overpaying for one at 37.

It would be a pretty good haul to say the least. I wonder who they'd go for at 46.

Have a hard time figuring the math for Adding Metualla to the Bregman, Tucker and Daz group.

If Bregman agreed to 4.5 that gets you an extra 3
which Daz will take at #37
Leaves you whatever you can save on Tucker plus 850k and the money for the second pick.  Not sure that is enough,

You'd have to take Matuella at 37 because he won't slip by the D-Backs to 46

You'd guess either Kirby or Matuella is available at 37.  At this point though, I imagine you don't risk the DBacks trying to make Daz happy and just snag him at 37

Swanson won't be a big discount for them at 1/1 Maybe $7m?. How could they afford to give Daz $5m at #43?

Oh, I hadn't seen anything, but was guessing with the Astros likely to take him at #2, D-backs wouldn't have much leverage. Slot was what, $8.5m?

6 walks in 114 IP is damned impressive.  If he can develop a strikeout pitch, or just become another groundball bot, he'll be fun.

If the pitches have movement and he can hit his spots he'll be successful.

Saarloos?  Or does he throw harder?

Eshelman threw 6 pitches tonight.

Nobody likes to see a kid throwing 143 pitches in a game, but apart from that game he averaged 105 pitches in each of his weekly starts this season.

Harder. Saarloos was around 87, IIRC. Eshelman throws 89-91 and topping out at 92-93.

Luhnow was the best hire.

He and Elias are certainly fantastic at gaming the system.  Maneuvering pieces expertly to land 3 top 10 picks.  Took Bregman a little high, Tucker a little high and floated to Boras that 5 million awaits Daz at #37.  Think I'd have liked Fulmer or Benintendi over Bregman but still a fantastic haul.

Aiken to the Indians.  Their problem now.

Assuming he signs for slot, he'll have given up over $2.6MM compared to the $5MM on the table last year.

Have to wait a lot longer than that.  Players develop in such strange ways.

It will never happen, but I would love to hear the debate that goes on behind closed doors.  On the way home, I was listening to MLB and the two guys were debating players, Fulmer in this case.  One liked him a lot and felt he was the top collegiate arm, while the other felt he was a bullpen arm and a team shouldn't go for a pen arm in round one.   I assume this type of debate is the norm within all organizations.  A tough business.

And just think how hard it is to actually predict these guys, even once they make it to MLB.  Take Springer for example, I bet, even after a full year and at age 24 or 25, opinions are still quite divergent.  Or McCullers, would he have been a top ten pick if he was in the draft last year?  Maybe, maybe not.  But this year, he might well have been 1-1.  The draft seems to have numerous college players who were thought only to be late round quality coming out of high school, but are now first round picks.

Anyways, a long winded way of pointing out the obvious: it's way too early to say anything but "let's hope they stay healthy and succeed."

I'm assuming that Close gave Aiken sufficient CYA concerning the $5,000,000 bird in the hand. If he didn't, then the difference between that figure and what he ultimately signs for will be the quantum of the malpractice claim. Surely, Close is too good to have gotten himself into such a pickle.

From what I read, Aiken and his family were at peace with him not joining the Astros organization the night before the deadline.  In the end money was less to do with it.

I don't know, the Astros were the bearer of bad news.  Kind of like when the mechanic tells you your car needs 600 dollars in repairs when that is all you wanted was an inspection.  The car may truly need those repairs but your gut instantly wants to question it.

That stand on principle cost him dearly in principal. I strongly suspect that he thought that he could get more money the next year.

Of course if he heals up nicely and makes 100 million in his lifetime, I imagine he'll be quite happy with his decision

You raise an interesting question, Counselor. I had supposed that Close was a lawyer. Still, lawyer or not, advising a kid not to take $5,000,000 under the circumstances surely would have been negligence. Is he still using Close?

Nix did himself no favors.  Arizona's first pick today is 801k.  15 picks later he'll be at the value the Astros offered him last year.  Now he did muster a 6 figure settlement but he also lost a year (which if he makes it to the majors could be worth millions)

He doesn't have a ton of leverage.  He won't be ready to pitch next year.  No idea what his asking price is.

Difficult to tell how much extra money if any the Astros have left.  Their second round pick is a 765k slot.  Bregman and Eshelman are under slot.  Tucker is likely a little under slot, and Daz is way over.  850k wiggle room if the top picks sign.

He means what the Astros offered him at the end, without Aiken's extra slot money. Something like $600k; about what they could've spent without losing future picks, only tax money.

Of course, some team could give him over-slot money this year, too. We shall see.

By the way, for those who say the Astros "reached" on Bregman: I have no opinion of him, but he was ranked #4 or so on BA and/or MLB.com lists. Perhaps you can quibble with HOU for not taking Rodgers, but after that, it seems like the next 5-10 guys (Tucker included) had very little separation between them. We'll probably never know if the Astros genuinely think Bregman is a better player than Rodgers, or if they just decided they had to compromise in order to get Cameron at 37. But it's not like they passed on multiple clear-cut superior players in order to take a guy who clearly wasn't in the same league.

#79 Riley Ferrell TCU closer

What I wrote in the other draft thread:
Quote
the Horned Frogs closer and former A&M Consolidated HSer with the mid to high 90s FB has struck out 45 in 28 IP this year while walking 18 and allowing 10 hits. Was even better as a sophomore when he had a 70/14 strikeout to walk ratio in 45 innings. Listed at 6’1” 200 lbs. Never drafted.

Lot of guys from BA's interesting day 2 player list still available after round 3:

Quote
1. Donny Everett, rhp, Clarksville (Tenn.) HS (No. 21)

Everett might be the hardest-throwing prep pitcher in this year’s class. He’s committed to Vanderbilt, so if he is not picked early on Tuesday, he may end up getting to campus.

3. Dakota Chalmers, rhp, North Forsyth HS, Cumming, Ga. (No. 34)

Chalmers is oozing with projection, and scouts can dream on him as a potential middle-of-the-rotation arm. He is committed to Georgia.

6. Justin Hooper, lhp, De La Salle HS, Concord, Calif. (No. 39)

Hooper’s ceiling is as high as any prospect in the class. He battled some issues with consistency this spring, but he’s a 6-foot-7 lefthander with elite fastball velocity. Hooper is committed to UCLA.

7. Demi Orimoloye, of, St. Matthew HS, Orleans, Ontario, Canada (No. 41)

A dynamic athlete with a high ceiling both offensively and defensively, Orimoloye could be an early pick on Tuesday. He is committed to Oregon.

8. David Hill, rhp, San Diego (No. 44)

Hill asserted himself as one of the most polished pitchers in the college class this spring. His stuff isn’t explosive, but he can pitch in the low 90s and has feel for three average pitches.

9. Joe McCarthy, of, Virginia (No. 46)

McCarthy might have been in line to go earlier in the draft if not for a back injury that sidelined him for most of the season. He has been slow to return, but has shown progress in Virginia’s postseason run to the College World Series.

10. Kyle Molnar, rhp, Aliso Niguel HS, Aliso Viejo, Calif. (No. 53)

Molnar has battled issues with consistency, but he has the potential for three average or better pitches. Molnar is committed to UCLA.

My wild ass prediction is that by 2018 he'll be the Astros starting 3b.

Really?  I'd figure that if someone's moving to 3B, it'd be Correa.  I guess we'll have to see how Bregman's glove and arm look.

Anyone have any thoughts, or knowledge of this guy? (4th rounder Hermelyn)

Got good reviews for his framing and play calling in the cape cod league last summer.  His offensive stats have improved every year at OU with a power surge this season.

I'm thinking there will be deference to the stud.  Besides if you're talking minutia defensively then you go with the guy who's already there.

Does Bregman have nearly enough arm to make the throw Correa made last night?

After 5, just 3 left on BAs list.  (won't bother to post it again):

Quote
1. Donny Everett, rhp, Clarksville (Tenn.) HS (No. 21)

Everett might be the hardest-throwing prep pitcher in this year’s class. He’s committed to Vanderbilt, so if he is not picked early on Tuesday, he may end up getting to campus.

10. Kyle Molnar, rhp, Aliso Niguel HS, Aliso Viejo, Calif. (No. 53)

Molnar has battled issues with consistency, but he has the potential for three average or better pitches. Molnar is committed to UCLA.

Presumably a very deep discount then.

About half the picks so far in Rd 7 are college seniors.

College Seniors in Rounds 7, 8, 9, 10. I guess they really did need to scrape together some extra change to afford Daz, unless I've missed some other potential over-slot guy?

I'm thinking the same thing, Reuben, although Freeman does look like a very intriguing arm.  Maybe this is also in the event there's an over slot guy who falls into the later rounds?

Definitely a possibility. I haven't seen anything about expected bonus $ for Bregman or Tucker. As Pots noted earlier, Eshelman was presumably slot or a little under.

round 6: Muriel, Nestor   Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy (Puerto Rico)   CF   R/R   HS

Sixteen!  He'll barely be in Corpus this decade.

From the Astros.com article:

Astros amateur scouting director Mike Elias isn't 100 percent certain, but he believes Muriel is the youngest player to be selected in the Draft. "He's one of the youngest ones we could come up with when we looked," Elias said. "We're pretty excited about him. He's a toolsy kid. He can run, throw and hit a little bit. You sign a kid like this, develop him and see what you've got in a few years. He could turn into anything at his age and [with] his physical tools."

5th round

Astros take Trent Thorton right handed pitcher

Thornton (listed at 6'0" 185 lbs) whiffed 81 in 62 IP this past season for UNC. He also walked 31 however.

"He's got a plus curveball, and he throws hard," Elias said. "He's got a fastball that generates swings and misses. The strikeout ratio is one of the things we look at for college pitchers. He could be a fast-moving reliever as well, but if we choose to put him a starter's role, he can do that, too."

How magnanimous of him.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

#499 (17th round): Justin Garcia, Nova Southeastern OF

What I wrote previously:

Quote
the last time the Astros took a Sharks outfielder didn’t work out so bad (J.D. Martinez) so how about another? Garcia hit .385/.478/.906 this year which was his first at the DII school. Those totals included 26 homers, 5 of which were hit in one day during a doubleheader. Took a meandering path to Nova, not playing baseball his first year out of high school before playing the next year at an Illinois juco and the subsequent one at a Florida juco. The lefty swinger is listed at 6’3” and 235 lbs. 25 Ws and 35 Ks in 192 ABs. 9 out of 10 in steals. Never drafted.

Whether sincere or merely a ploy to make sure he gets drafted by a particular team in a pre-arranged deal remains to be seen. A projected 2nd-rounder. Listed at 6’4” 235 lbs. TCU commit.

Man, that kind of bums me out. I know he didn't get as much hype as Cavan coming out of HS, but he was fairly well-regarded, right? At what point would most players transfer to a smaller college where they'd get more playing time?

I'm pretty sure most teams don't take a lot of HS players after the first 5 rounds or so. After that it probably benefits the player more to go play ball in college. Every team will take a few hard-sign HS players after the 10th round (as the Astros have done with Sands, Luken Baker, and possibly Sandoval this year, in prior years with guys like Virant, Hinojosa, Marshall, etc.), but those are generally guys that are real long-shots to sign.

That said, maybe they've taken even fewer than normal this year, I dunno.

The 3 Sooners taken by the Astros (Hermelyn 4th, Garza 26th and Carpenter 33rd) were part of a 11-man contingent of OU players drafted in 2015. Most of any program in the country. Not bad for a team that went 34-27.

I had to look up to see who's playing at the Dell and Disch-Falk so that tells you how little I've been paying attention. None of the schools triggered any recognition of possible names but that's not saying much.

Jim Callis labels the Astros' draft the best of 2015.  I would be disappointed if they didn't, considering their picks/pool, but he also had praise for other picks outside of 1-37, labeling Eshelman the "best strike-thrower in college baseball history" and noting Ferrell as someone who "should advance quickly" as a reliever.

A few signings AC hasn't yet accounted for (at least at the time I post this):

14-rounder Johnny Sewald has signed says his brother Paul who pitches in the Mets system at Binghamton. Unsurprisingly he's being assigned to the V-Cats.

13th-rounder Kevin McCanna has agreed to terms, says the Chron.

Bregman, Eshelman and Ferrell all on view in CWS this weekend.

Plus Zac Person (LSU) and Bobby Wernes (Arkansas).

(Fixing what I posted earlier).

Nicholls State C Christian Correa signed as NDFA (h/t WTHB). Hit .261 as a senior this past season.

According to Jonathan Mustard, the Astros have signed Kyle Tucker, though only save about $200k off the slot value.

I haven't followed the economics of it all, does that mean in order to sign Cameron, they must get a big savings from Bregman?

The bulk, if not all, the 2.3MM overslot payment of (reportedly) $4MM to Cameron will have to come from Bregman. If he were to sign for, say, $5MM that would be an underslot savings of $2.4MM.

They've also saved some cash from their Seniors circa rd. 6-10. Plus they can go over by what, $800k or so before losing future picks?

But $5m or even less for Bregman does sound plausible.

Going over by 0-5% of the pool only carries monetary fines, so that $864k that they can use and only have to worry about paying a little more money.

Plus, I think there were reports of the Twins wanting Tucker at #6, that slot was about $3.9m. For Bregman, on the other hand, Colorado was almost certainly not taking him at #3, leaving the Rangers at #4 with a $5,026,500 slot value as his best shot if the Astros passed on him at #2. So I'd guess his bonus could very well be around $5m.

Not yet reflected on the AC page but 4th-rounder Anthony Hermelyn signed for $250,000 which would be an underslot savings of $272,700.

Another NDFA signing (h/t Astros County): 6'2" 165 lb senior Jacob Dorris out A&M-Corpus Christi. The closer for the last 3 seasons for the Islanders, had something of an up and down career there. The sidearmer struck out 148 in 121 IP over his 4 seasons but also walked 52.

Likely picks 3 and 4 will cancel each other out and if Bregman and Daz cancel each other out then the Astros will be 772k under slot.  Add on the 864k and that's 1.63 million they could dangle in front of Baker, Sands and Sandoval.

Astros officially announce the signing of 8 more players, all of whom had previously said (or strongly implied) they'd sign. Officially, the Astros have announced the signing of 18 out of 42 selections.

One of the signees was 13th-rounder Kevin McCanna of Rice, who Jim Callis says via twitter signed for $100K.

39th round pick Nick Rivera of FGCU won't be signing:

Quote
For the first time ever, the Eagles — who’ve had to rebuild from drafts like two years ago when six juniors were plucked high enough to go pro — will return their top six hitters. That includes senior all-conference first-teamer and Louisville Slugger third-team All-American Nick Rivera, who last week turned down a $300,000 signing bonus to return to school.

Schmidt was a senior who threw just 8 innings combined his last 2 seasons for the Cardinal.

Astros announce the signings of 5 more draftees, all of which were known previously as was the announced NDFA signing.

The PR release from the Astros claims that 26 of the 42 draft picks have been signed. Actually that's not true--it's 27. None of the press releases to date have mentioned the signing of 33rd rounder Kolbey Carpenter. That's despite the fact he shows up on the active roster of the V-Cats released today and his signing even shows up on the official MLB transactions page.

Finally got to see Ferrell. Somehow kept missing him. He's a curious pick for the Astros, IMO. I usually expect them to target strike throwers over stuff, but he's the polar opposite. Not sure whether they just thought the stuff was too good to pass up, or whether they just figure they can fix him.

Heard talk about him being a starter. Don't know about his history stamina wise, but he has the repertoire for a starter as that change on his last pitch was quite impressive. I assume he is in the pen because he is too inefficient to start, not due to stamina issues. Either way, he won't be that effective as a starter or reliever without improving his command, but if he does, that talent is pretty special.

I know this was covered pre-draft, but I can't remember how serious his injury problems were this spring - presumably that caused him to drop/get less money, or did other clubs just not like him the way the Astros did?

None of the pre-draft writeups suggested anything was seriously wrong injury-wise so apparently that wasn't a factor. It may have been 2014 presented a unique set of circumstances that Marshall was using to his advantage. His agents advisors could do the math just like everybody else and see how much the Astros had available under the pool with the lowered offer to Aiken. They asked for the max and would have gotten it had Aiken accepted.

Another NDFA signing:  Andrew Thome of the U of North Dakota. Thome this spring in 94 IP gave up 107 hits with 65 strikeouts and 22 walks. According to the article, he "throws anywhere from 88-90 mph usually but has topped out at 92. He relies on a sinking fastball, slider and change-up".

Drellich reporting that the deal for Bregman is expected to be $6M.  LINK

Alex Bregman, the Astros’ top pick in this year’s draft, has agreed to a signing bonus expected to be $6 million, a person close to the process told the Chronicle. The slot value for the No. 2 overall selection is $7.42 million.

That's a prevalent practice for college Seniors. Especially ones not seen as Top 3-4 rd talent.

So with the LSU SS signing, how are the Astros chances of signing Daz Cameron looking?

Wow, not sure why he commanded 6.  Colorado wasn't taking him and The Rangers pick was 5.026 million.  Figured 5.5 would be the max.   That pretty much eliminates most of the extra slot money.  Now I really wish they looked at Fulmer or Benintendi.  Hell Rodgers only got 5.5 million.  They could of had him and maybe the cash to land one of the long shots.  Well the good news is they really like Bregman.  Must be something special there.

I know both Drellich and the Baton Rouge paper have reported the $6MM figure, but I'm still waiting for Callis to confirm that amount. I was surprised by the number as well. Once the Rodgers figure came out (if not before), a lot of people were speculating in the $5MM to $5.5MM range.

I highly doubt they would've used the #37 pick on him unless they were absolutely certain they had the money for it. Barring some crazy Aiken-esque scenario of course.

The only drama, to me, is whether they somehow have enough to sign the 11th rd kid, or even better, Sands or Baker. Those last two are looking pretty unlikely right now.

I'm wondering if players like Sands and Baker will only drafted as kind of an insurance policy against not being able to sign Daz.  if you can't sign him, at least you have a couple high upside guys that you can turn to with the extra cash.

3rd-rder Riley Ferrell's bonus w/@Astros = $1 mil (slot 79 = $765,600). TCU RHP, closer, FB to 98 & wicked mid-80s SL when on.

Also Chandler Rome tweeted out that Ferrell, like Freeman and Bregman, will be assigned to Quad Cities.

(BTW, give Rome a follow at @Chandler_Rome. He's the associate reporter at Astros.com. He's McTaggart without all the inane twaddle.)

Yeah, I'm thinking Sands and Baker are probably insurance/leverage in case something goes wrong with Daz - they'd still have something to spend their extra money on.

Now that we know the price tag differential between the two was $2.4MM ($5.9MM vs $3.5MM), that money could have been used for not one but perhaps two of the overslot guys. So if it came down to Benintendi + Sands (or Baker) + Sandoval vs Bregman, then yeah count me in on the former.

From the way everything has played out, I'm assuming that Elias/Luhnow must really be high on Bregman; higher than most of us seem to be. They could've had Rodgers, Tate, Benintendi, Fulmer, Jay, etc. and still been able to afford Tucker and Cameron or even more. That tells me Bregman was a strong favorite of theirs. Whether they were "right" of course remains to be seen.

As you are well aware, teams are calling ahead of the draft and asking him what he was willing to sign for. If he told teams he was asking for $7.4MM, he would be now be playing in the Cape and preparing for his junior season at Arkansas. You know as well as I do those numbers are worked out in advance.

I assume basically the same, or maybe they just didn't like Benintendi (or others who would sign at a similar price) too much.

And they give out different numbers to different teams. Agents don't want do drive down the top bonuses, they want to drive them up. They want baseball talent to cost as much as possible, even if it means taking less in some situations. If Benintendi takes a deep discount at 2, Bregman falls and gets less money later. Some player later on benefits, but overall, elite talent costs less per player. They want to avoid that.

So what you're saying is if the Astros offered $3.7MM at #2 and the Red Sox offered $3.5MM at #7, the "advisor" would be there telling Benintendi to turn down the Astros offer and accept the Red Sox offer? And you would expect Benintendi to go along with that?

As you are well aware, teams are calling ahead of the draft and asking him what he was willing to sign for. If he told teams he was asking for $7.4MM, he would be now be playing in the Cape and preparing for his junior season at Arkansas. You know as well as I do those numbers are worked out in advance.

Different teams.  Different slots.  Different discussions.  Whatever the case I agree with Rueben that the Astros had Bregman rated far above the others.  Benintendi wasn't going to be the pick, period.

I'm certainly more than happy with the Bregman/Tucker/Cameron haul. Just outlining a scenario where (perhaps, perhaps not) it could have been "haulier".

So everyone in the top 10 is signed.  Nice.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Eshelman signed for $225K under slot, per Jim Callis' reporting:

2nd-rder Thomas Eshelman signs w/@Astros for $1.1 mil (slot = $1,325,700).

Astros could spend up to $1.2MM on one of the overslot candidates w/o losing a draft pick.

FWIW, a refresher on the 3 HS kids in question:

Cole Sands, RHP. BA ranked him #79 in the class. excerpt from scouting report:
"His fastball sits in the low 90s with sinking action and has touched 95 mph. His secondary stuff is still developing, but he has some feel for a changeup and his slider has made strides since he scrapped his curveball in favor of it. Sands plays third base when he's not pitching, which has meant he's not always as fresh as some other top high school pitchers. He earns praise for his makeup and leadership. Sands is one of the younger players in the draft class and won't turn 18 until after the signing deadline. Despite his age, he doesn't offer much projectability, as he's already solidly built at 6-foot-3, 200 pounds." Kiley McDaniel echoed the "little projection" part, but ranked him #44.

Luken Baker, RHP/1B. Announced as RHP by Astros. BA ranked him #58 (just ahead of Riley Ferrell):
"Baker has some of the best raw power in the class and he posted some of the best exit speeds on batted balls on the showcase circuit. But he's also relatively advanced in his approach, as he uses the opposite field well and does a good job of not chasing pitches out of the zone....On the mound, Baker has a 91-95 fastball with good downhill plane and some sink down in the zone, although it's relatively true when he elevates it. His breaking ball flashes above-average. His changeup is less developed and would need to be a point of emphasis as a pro. Baker, a Texas Christian signee, shows effort in his delivery and has a head whack, which leads some to believe he'll end up as a power reliever. It's hard not to think of Mark Trumbo when watching Baker, as they have a similar skillset coming out of high school, and both faced choices on whether to pitch or hit." #77 on McDaniel's list.

Patrick Sandoval, LHP. BA ranked him #392:
"Sandoval switched his college commitment this spring, de-committing from a loaded Vanderbilt class and choosing to stay closer to home, signing with Southern California. The lefthander stands out for his curveball, which was a plus pitch last summer at showcases and at the Perfect Game All-America Classic in San Diego. Sandoval played football last fall to add strength and help him maintain the velocity on his 90-91 mph fastball. His arm action has some length and a bit of a stab in the back, which can be difficult for him to repeat, leading to control struggles, but those were less frequent in his senior season. He had 30 walks and 99 strikeouts in 87 innings. Sandoval was finishing strong, pitching well to lead Mission Viejo on a deep playoff run, with 10 strikeouts in his latest playoff start." McDaniel had him way higher, at #135.

*The roughly $1.3m the Astros could spend on one of these kids is roughly equivalent to slot value for the #46 overall pick in this year's draft.

edit to add Kiley McDaniel's rankings. Can't find mlb.com's.

That $1.2 MM (or $1.3MM if you will) in turn becomes around $2MM when you factor in the 75% tax.

I think it would be insane for any of these guys to turn down 1.2 million.  If you go to college you push back your rule 5 clock 2 or 3 years.  And if you improve enough in college to elevate your stock to more money, imagine where your stock would be if you did that in the minors with a mlb ballclub.  Basically would be just a year or 2 at most away from being in the majors and getting close to that big pay day.  And if you don't elevate your stock in college, you may never make anything.

Take McCullers for example.  If he went to college and improved like he has, he probably makes 6+ million in a signing bonus this year.  But he'd likely be looking at 2017 as his first year in the majors.  And even if he super 2'd he'd still be one year behind.  And one year to a pticher like himself (career wise) is 8 figures.

You've picked an outlier. For every McCullers, there are dozens of kids who bank on improving their lot in college but get hurt or max out in college and, thereby, hurt their draft position. There's something to be said for financial security over what may be behind door number one..

All he needs to do is walk onto any random campus, walk into a party and introduce himself as someone who pitches for the Astros and just signed a million dollar contract.  He'll get more that night than the average college student does in a year.

I hadn't been following the math as much this draft, and had no idea they still had another $1.2M to $2M to play with still (after Daz and all).  Good news indeed!

Yep, that's it.

I'll qualify that. They've got about $300K left to play with (so far as we know--could be less if they went above $100K on a post-10th rounder other than Sandoval) so technically they could make an offer of $400K to a single draftee or $250K each to two draftees or $200K each to three draftees. Realistically, of the 8 remaining unsigned only 3 are in play at this stage--Matt Bower (#23), James Carter (#27) and Alex Vargas (#39)*. Only 9 days left til the July 17th signing deadline.

*4 if you think the Astros might decide to bump up their previously-rejected offer of $300K to Nick Rivera (#38).

Unsigned 23rd rounder Matt Bower of Washington State is pitching for the Madison Mallards of the Northwoods League. Currently 25 K/5 BB in 28 IP.

And 39th rounder Alex Vargas (a Quinnipiac commit) is pitching for the Battle Creek Bombers in the same league.

From the Callis/MLB Pipeline Inbox column today:

Quote
Which Astros Draft pick(s) outside of the top 10 rounds should we be on the lookout for who could eventually help the big league club down the line?
-- Michael D., Tomball, Texas

Beyond [11th-rounder Patrick] Sandoval, two more interesting Houston draftees after the 10th round are Rice righty Kevin McCanna (13th) and Arizona State outfielder Johnny Sewald (14th). McCanna mixes four pitches and throws strikes, while Sewald is a center fielder who's similar to former Sun Devil and current Astros farmhand Andrew Aplin.

From Drellich's draft article today:

Quote
According to a baseball source, the only Astros player after the 10th round to sign for more than $100,000 to this point is high school pitcher Patrick Sandoval...

Partially stating the obvious:

The team isn’t expected to sign any more of its high school draft picks, but could bring in some of its unsigned college players.

Sure, it's possible they don't use all of it. Plus their allotment is significantly higher than others due to the multiple high picks. It's clear the management team wanted to focus more of the available resources to the draft and player development. Didn't have to be that way. Could have signed free agents and played hard ball on bonuses like Drayton did when the farm died. The money isn't limitless, there are choices to be made, and some will choose to spend less on the draft.

I don't think it's fair to assume everyone would be so aggressive in making sure every dollar was spent.

I thought about bringing up the Drayton years too, but really JBM is right. Every team spends whatever their draft allotment is these days. Crane spending $18m on 2015 draftees is a good thing but to have done otherwise would simply have been incredibly stupid. And, given the increased awareness of prospects that's come about in recent years, probably caused a huge wave of negative backlash by fans.

Where we'll really see if Crane is committed to funding a consistent winner is if they lock up guys like Correa, Springer, McCullers et al to long-term deals.

Aye, every team uses their slot values, but not every team is trading for more picks and spending so much internationally.

With less than 48 hours to go to the deadline, the D-Backs have yet to sign Dansby Swanson. The other 2 unsigned 1st round picks are both Dodger selections: Walker Buehler (#24) and Kyle Funkhouser (#35).

23rd round pick Matt Bower has been signed. As I noted previously, the lefty pitcher from Washington State had been pitching for the Madison Mallards of the Northwoods League this summer. Finished with a 31/7 strikeout to walk ratio in 34 IP (7 appearances, 6 starts).

As has been noted, he's being assigned to Greeneville.

With Bower in the fold, that makes 35 of 42 picks signed including the first 23 picks. Also 27 of the first 28 and 33 of the first 35.

When is the deadline?  Friday 6PM CST?

Funkhouser announced on twitter that he's returning to Louisville for senior year.

Buehler and Dodgers apparently have come to a deal (he's also scheduled to undergo TJS).

D-Backs and Swanson (and Casey Close) still negotiating down to the deadline.

SS Nick Shumpert, who early on was considered a potential 1st rounder and ultimately was drafted in the 7th round by Detroit, did not sign with the Tigers. He was a Kentucky commit but has now announced he will be playing at San Jac.

A name to follow for 2016.

Casey Close is the new Boras, just not as good at representing his clients.
