Yes, a bit, but he's really swinging at some pitches that he can do nothing with. Popping out a lot on the infield, as he's been doing, is not a good sign. He needs to start going the other way again.

The Astros are in a horrible division and for all I know they may well win it. But I think we're seeing that the Astros simply cannot compete with a good team when most of the key guys they rely on are Mendoza or worse. Ground Control doesn't care about batting average but these guys aren't always going to hit a bomb the one time per week they get a hit.

The difference in batting averages between the Tigers and Astros is astonishing. The fact that they have scored the same amount of runs is amazing. The Astros can't maintain their production if their averages don't rise. But hey, I love that the are doing so much better than last year.

I've given this a lot of thought. I think there are four possible reasons that I haven't minded Ashby. (1) I had read two years of Ashby comments in the GZ before I actually heard him. Nobody could have been as bad as my expectations. (2) I never heard Ashby when the Stros were losing. I've only heard him while the Stros are actually doing pretty well. I suspect his gratuitous negativity is lower this year than over the past two seasons. (3) I'm pretty easy to amuse, and my mood when I'm listening to baseball these days is actually pretty good. (4) i really don't have any baseball sense, and someone should take over the Friday recap immediately.

It did occur to me last night that if the Stros keep winning, you're going to have a whole generation of new fans who only know Ashby, and they will think he's the voice of the Astros.
