Panama #1 in "Well-Being"
« on: February 18, 2015, 04:13:00 pm »
According to this global poll.  USA is #12.  UK doesn't feature.  The Top 5 is Panama, Costa Rica, Denmark, Austria and Brazil.

Of course, when Austria starts feeling good about itself, it's time for everyone else to worry.

I'm pretty sure that was the joke implicit in Limey's post. My internet's back on after a twenty hour outage so the happiness quotient around here is on the rise. I get to argue pointlessly on the internet, son gets to watch Baby TV, everyone's happy.

I've only spent 30 minutes of my life in Panama so I can't say but I can confirm that Costa Rica fairly awesome with the people barely edging out the scenic splendor as the top draw. Love the place.

Brazil is surprising. I know at least 30 Brazillians of various persuasions and most are uptight, focused on image and have very little good to say about the homeland.
Another trenchant comment by a jealous lesser intellect.

The economy in Panama is great and has been for years. It's operating effectively at full employment. In fact, the country has had to institute some immigration programs to lure workers from around the region to come and fill quite a variety of positions that need more workers. This has led inevitably to an ugly, idiotic backlash of xenophobia in certain corners, but it's mostly ignored by sensible people.

Anyway, I think the reason Panama always ranks so high in these surveys is that there's a tremendous optimism in Panama that I have a hard time finding anywhere else. The middle class is growing, fast. Contrast that with most other countries you can think of. It's amazing what happens to an economy when the segment of people who earn money and spend all they earn is systematically encouraged to grow. Countries with stagnant economies should try it some time.

I don't know how happy these other people are (they seem pretty happy to me), but I've detected a similar optimism in Colombia, Chile and Uruguay. I would recommend any of the above countries to the traveling happiness seeker.

Chile is awesome. If I could get away with it, I'd move there in a minute.

More interesting is the percentages within the article.  Panama is nearly 20% clear of the next in line (61% vs. 44%) and nearly double the US (33%).

I hope to make it down there sometime soon...

Come on down any time, dude, let me know. Do you still have potential business interests in Panama?

Yes, but the impending summit of the Americas has the governments in knots.  Likely won't work anything out until after that takes place in April

I think that the struggle between Peru and Chile for pisco sour supremacy is as intense as the Chile/Argentina border dispute.
