Fantasy baseball 2015: Scoresheet
« on: January 12, 2015, 09:46:08 am »
I may have asked this in the past, but here goes:

I'm interested in starting an OWA Scoresheet league for 2015.  For those unfamiliar with Scoresheet, it has similarities to fantasy baseball, in that you draft a team, but it is based on simulating actual games - so things like fielding, baselining, errors, etc. count.  Instead of having categories that compile points for your team, you get actual results (scoresheets, box scores, statistics, etc.) from the simulated head-to-head games for that week, and you play a 162 game season.  In addition, you can choose to have a continuing league, which means that after your first year's draft, you can keep a certain number of players for your team - so drafting rookies and prospects is emphasized.

Scoresheet is running a special for $29 per team for this year - www.scoresheet.com.  Reply to this thread or PM me if you're interested.

PS - it's more competitive if you do an AL-only or NL-only league if there are 12 teams or less, so I'd look at AL-only unless the majority votes otherwise.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

This seems like a good way to get to know our new league (I'm still woefully ignorant of them).  Count me in.

That's four... we need at least 10.  Who else wants a piece?

OK, website is getting set up, now it's time to schedule the draft.

Here is the description of how the draft will work.  It is NOT a live draft - generally about one round per day.  Does anyone object to starting this on 2/16?

The draft order will be chosen at random, and trading picks IS ALLOWED.

2/16 is fine for me too.

and trading picks IS ALLOWED.

This frightened me. I'm already overwhelmed. If you'd like a dramatic re-enactment of Timmy P's old draft rooms. I'll set up a live cam of me crying when someone asks me to trade a pick.

Not to me - they'll likely ask you for your credit card when you set up your log in credentials.  Otherwise, Jeff will probably email you in March.

Reminder, the draft starts in 5 days.  A few things to cover for all the first-timers:

1.  You will keep 13 major leaguers after this year, PLUS any minor leaguers you have.
2.  Defense counts.  Each player is given a defensive rating, and your team will be affected by its overall defensive rating.  It is the TOTAL defensive rating that counts, not any particular position; so having a SS that is +.10 over the SS average counts just as much as having a 1b that is +.10.
3.  Platoon splits count.  Each player's platoon split (based off previous years) is listed on the web site.
4.  Your rankings can be redone between picks, so you can correct for the players/positions you have or have not gotten.

We are listed by our real names, so I wouldn't know most of the people I'd be kibitzing, etc.

I'm getting my list ready and its kind of a lot of work.

That's why I'm flying by the seat of my pants.  For example, since I'm the third pick, I've only ranked 3 players so far.

Yeah, I'm picking 8th, and the guys I'm most interested in will surely be gone by then. I've got a list with a few names, but I'm actually waiting for the first few picks to go off the board to update it.

This is also making me realize that I still know a lot more about the NL than the AL.

I paid.  There was an email from the league, and I followed it.  I may have registered first.  I think that I ended up paying about $70, which I thought was high.  That's about as far as I got.

I paid.  There was an email from the league, and I followed it.  I may have registered first.  I think that I ended up paying about $70, which I thought was high.  That's about as far as I got.

I thought we were supposed to be on the $29 introductory rate.

Maybe the introductory rate doesn't apply to lawyers?  How come you snuck through?

I like that this brings a little baseball activity to fill the last parts of the void.

Mike Trout has leprosy by the way. Definitely shouldn't take him in the first five picks.

This is the most complicated draft structure ever.  It looks like my first pick is sometime tomorrow afternoon.

And these people surely are wordy.

That's a bold strategy, Cotton.  Let's see if it works out for him.

I'm curious what level of homerism we'll see.  Will Dominguez be available to me with the 10th pick in the first round?

So, at your pick time does it automatically draft whoever is at the top of your list?

My only responsibility would be making sure the top guy on my list is who I want to select?

Yes, unless you've already drafted someone at that position, in which case the computer goes down your list until it comes to a player at a position you haven't filled.  This can be overridden by holding "alt" while selecting that player.

There's no draft button or anything. You just put the guy you want at the top of your list and when your draft time arrives, he gets drafted.

Just make sure the guy you want is the first one listed in your little box on the bottom right hand side of this page, and hit save:

If catching defense isn't a big factor and you can play him at catcher even if he is playing DH or 1B then that's maybe some good thinking.

At least we have time to react. This usually happens to me in the regular drafts, and then I have to figure out what to do in 60 seconds. Invariably I screw up.

I miss having goofy team names.  With the speed of this draft, the Houston Geologists would be perfect.

There is an option at login (and when you set your lineup) to name your team.  I was going to suggest we use our screen names, but going with goofy names is always welcome.

Finally, Springer gets some love! If I had my homer-mode engaged, that would have been the first Astro I selected. That was a good spot to get him in, Astros fan or not.

You know, when subnuclear mentioned the homerism I immediately assumed that someone had picked Springer and was a little surprised to see that it was Altuve instead. More surprised, I guess, that it didn't even occur to me that it could have been Altuve.

I just assumed that Neil would pick Springer last night in the pick before mine. When he didn't, that gave me some pause, but I decided to stick with Jones. I'll probably regret that by next year.

And it definitely looks like Cory is playing the long game.

I just assumed that Neil would pick Springer last night in the pick before mine. When he didn't, that gave me some pause, but I decided to stick with Jones. I'll probably regret that by next year.

And it definitely looks like Cory is playing the long game.

I had Springer next, but I thought I'd enjoy keeping up with Gray.

I love me some up and comers and seeing how the Astros are flying off the board it was time to jump. That being said I took him in the fourth round instead of the third to avoid being accused of being a homer. These back to back picks are kinda brutal once I gotta wait two rounds to pick again.

Is Hank Conger still available?

Check out this snippet from the ESPN fantasy rankings:

Quote
The acquisition of Hank Conger, along with the continued presence of last year's backup, Carlos Corporan, shortens the leash of Castro, but he still holds the highest upside of the trio, by a significant margin.

This from the same organization that ranked Gattis as the #1 AL catcher.

Agreed. Like all these recent picks. Has me more worried than I was after the first two rounds.

yes, when you get a prime draft spot like number 7, you get to screw number 8 every other round.

If defense is a factor in scoring, I'm still not sure how this is going to work out with guys that play multiple positions. Like say Hanley Ramirez ends up playing LF and Bogarts at SS in an actual game, would you be allowed to play Ramirez that day at short for your virtual game or does he have to play LF? Same with Gattis, can I play him at catcher in the fantasy games on the days where he plays in LF or even DH in the real games?

Good questions, so let me break this down:

1. Individual days don't matter.  A week's results matter - so if Ramirez played two games, went 3-4 and 0-5, you're not getting a 3-4 and an 0-5; you're getting 2 games based on .333 for the week.  (I learned this the hard way when Randy Johnson pitched another game the same week of his perfect game.)
2. If a player has a rating at a position, he may always play at that position, no matter where he plays IRL.  HanRam is a 4.65 SS, no matter if he's actually playing SS or LF.
3.  That rating? That rating right there?  That's half of defense.  If you played 8 other perfectly league-average defenders (really 7, b/c all pitchers are treated as league-average) then your team would have a defensive rating of -0.1, because HanRam is -0.1 from the average SS.
4.  The other half of defense is performance.  If HanRam made 2 errors that week in front of the Monster, then his performance for your team that week would be based on 2 errors - AT SHORTSTOP.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

and if I'm understanding it right, all OF can play any OF position, but the CF you play has his defense rating magnified, so you'd want to make sure a plus defender is there. Right?

Last year Garrett Richards had real good points per inning results, if he can pitch 200+ innings, I think he'll be a steal. I wanted him but thought he would last longer and I could wait.

There is certainly not.  That was actually Yankee PBP guy John Sterling's home run call for Cabrera followed by "That's the Melky Way!"  Along with gems like "An A-BOMB... from A-ROD!" and "Oh McCann can! Yes McCann CAN!" and "Mark sends a Tex-message over the left field fence! You're on the Mark, Texeira!" and "A belting by Beltran!" and "Robbie Cano, don't ya know?!" and "Bern, baby, Bern!"  He is the worst.

ETA:  I just found this one: “He opened his Golden Gates and hit it into the seats! Hey! It’s a Ben Francisco Treat!” Horrible.

Dangnabit!   Before you all jump on me for drafting Correa.. This is what happens when you forget to SAVE your updates to your list.

On a somewhat related note, Scoresheet only has one person listed for the DH.   How do we draft someone into the DH slot?

I figure they use it like a utility slot.  Whomever your draft (except for Ortiz) has a primary position.  If that position is filled then they stick him at DH.  Is this correct?

I figure any player can be designated as DH, but their defensive stats don't count.

I figure any player can be designated as DH, but their defensive stats don't count.

Yeah, it's just as easy to navigate to other people's list as it is to navigate the site generally.

Yes, I'm kidding.  I find that site so difficult to navigate that even if there was a way to figure out how to look at everyone else's list, I'd never get there, gentleman or not.

I'm a big fan of Cain and I think he does stuff that helps his team win. I'm not sure his skills translates to a virtual game though.

I wanted to get Verlander but was reluctant because he has really declined over the past couple of years, but I think he is capable of bouncing back in a huge way.

I guess nobody wants Joe Mauer anymore now that he no longer qualifies as a catcher. He has really dropped off and Minnesota still owes him about $92 million over the next 4 years. Maybe he's due for a good year.

Neil's strategy is to draft Astros or old or injured players. I keep waiting for him to take a flyer on A-Roid.

Get off his back, Neil obviously thought Astro Matt Dominguez, being an Astro, was a better option than Trevor Plouffe, or Conner Gillespie, or Juan Francisco, or David Freese, or Matty's high school teammate Mike Moustakas.

Get off his back, Neil obviously thought Astro Matt Dominguez, being an Astro, was a better option than Trevor Plouffe, or Conner Gillespie, or Juan Francisco, or David Freese, or Matty's high school teammate Mike Moustakas.

I would draft any of those players before Dominguez.

I was supposed to take Bundy when the automatic pick took Saunders.  I had put it on round 15 because I thought I'd have run out of knowledge by then, but it had actually happened many rounds before.

I think he will have a good month or two at least, though I'll probably use him as a DH.

Wow, my phone just told me that Marcus Stroman needs Tommy John surgery.  If I read that right, that's my 2nd and 3rd round picks likely out for the year.  I fear for Springer.

As I recall, right after Job's fantasy team went on the DL he was afflicted with boils.

I think your team will be a great case for establishing how well correlated scoresheet teams are to the actual team performance.

So far 21 third basemen have been drafted in an AL only league. Matt Dominguez is still available.

I guess I glossed over the keeper league detail... was wondering why so many prospects went in the mid rounds. Kind of kicking myself now for not jumping on that trend earlier. I get the feeling my team is going to be a late 00s Astros squad... just enough veterans to not finish last, but no real hope for the future.

In a league where there are more Astros drafted than any other team. It's especially damning, but appropriate.

The other thing I just noticed within the last few days is that the people that have been drafted are grayed out on the list. I was using a spreadsheet and highlighting cells to figure out who I could draft.

With the utter genius I have displayed throughout this draft process my optimism is about on par with Brett Wallace's career batting average.

I was pretty surprised when I saw Escobar was taken.  I had to put on my thinking cap earlier this morning than I intended to come up with a replacement.  Escobar should hit pretty well for a backup, which I think is all you can ask for in the 29th round.

Next on my list is Sam Fuld and Gordon Beckham. Feel free to select them and make me pay for picking guys who might not ever make it to the big leagues ahead of them (the high achieved by picking potential greatness is so ephemeral).

I"m trying to decide between Grossman and Guyer (Tampa). My decision would be easier if you would let me know if you have any interest in either of them.

ETA: Never mind, I see that Neil already swooped in and grabbed Grossman.

I took a flyer on a fast riser during ST. We'll see how that goes, but he seems to know how to pitch and has good command. And his stuff (heater sitting at 93-94) is at least slightly above average.

The Mr. Pinks are starting the year off right with 3 Tommy Johns (Darvish, Stroman, and Christian Vazquez) and now Verlander will join Chris Taylor on the DL.  Should be a fun year.

I figured out that you simply report trades; you don't execute them on the system. They do that for you.

Has anyone figured out how to pay the discounted price? I saw that they sent out an email for the payment page which shows the $79 fee.

Search the site for "new player fee" or something like that, there is a seperate page for it.

People should read the PH section carefully or you might have your bench guys come in for your best players. (I guess I shouldn't say this, but I think its going to take a few weeks for us to figure it out.)

I also read that you want to be careful with position eligibility. Too many choices for multiple players will lead to weird decisions by the simulator.

So, of my 10 starters, 5 are starting the year on the DL (Richards, Cobb, Smyly, Colome, Kelly) and two got sent to the minors (Rodon, Heaney). That leaves me with 3 dim lights in my starting rotation. What happens when you can't even field a full rotation?

I would trade Rodon for a proven vet like Anabel Sanchez.

"AAA pitcher" starts for you. And you get hammered, in all likelihood.

From what I can tell they don't actually run the games until the end of the week.

They'll be posted on the website Monday of each week, both in summary and in PBP mode.  You can also see the box scores in your email on those days.

And you have the option of clicking through a PBP of each simulated game that has a layout somewhat like MLB Gameday. Its pretty fun. Took only about 20 minutes to click through the six games played.

Back to the middle of the pack with Sale back and Buchholz not self-destructing (and McHugh being awesome). Going through the play-by-play is great (if time consuming) fun.

The strategy is to pick a set of players who will perform well in the simulated games of the upcoming week and assign them optimal roles on your line-up card. The strategy is employed by researching the stats of the players and upcoming opponents they are playing against, making your line-up card appropriately and submitting it on Monday morning (or Sunday morning).

Do in-week stats matter, or is it purely head-to-head pitcher-hitter matchups?

The in-week stats matter. They are a factor in the performance of your simulated players. The number of innings played matters, too: if your real guys don't play enough innings, your simulated guys won't play all of the innings, either. Then they'll be replaced by your bench guys, or by generic AAA sims.

I believe it's the same process as the original draft.  Should be 5 rounds?  At any rate, I'm thankful for it.  My AAA catcher and AAA starting pitcher ain't really cutting the mustard.

Tough week for Futile Gesture: Alex Cobb getting TJ surgery, Hanley Ramirez runs into the wall and takes himself out for most of the week, and now Drew Smyly goes to the DL with shoulder stiffness. And Brock Holt is out because of a death in the family. And Rougned Odor sucks.

McHugh beat Keuchel this week.  Keuchal gave up 6 earned runs.

I'm dubious.

My line-up is pretty good against lefties, but I don't think Jarrod Dyson gets two hits in the same inning on him in real life.

My team is performing exactly opposite of my expectations. I thought I had put together a pretty decent offense with a shaky rotation. My rotation and bullpen have been excellent and offense has been pretty terrible. I expect both to regress to the mean and still be a middle of the pack team.

Somehow last week my sims out scored their opponents 36-24 and came away with a 2-5 record. 3 one-run losses didn't help.

The second in-season draft starts tonight if you didn't notice.

Indeed.  Trade offers are being made, and welcomed.

And we have a trade, as the Spiders add Nick Tropeano in exchange for the first pick in today's draft.

And another - Stephen Drew to NeilT for the second pick in today's draft.

6-1 this week to get back to .500! Amazing how much better your team performs when you take a few minutes to update your lineup. /captainobvious

I'm 6 games up on everyone and I think I will brag about it now because I'm not sure my pitching will hold out.

You kicked my ass this week. Thanks a bunch.

Ok, Neil, that does it, you're off the Christmas card list. Estrada was supposed to fall to me. Now I have to sit down this evening and actually study the lists of available players.

I guess I'm not paying any attention, but I did what I could.

Lineup questions: with Pedroia on the DL, Brock Holt has been playing 2B, although Scoresheet still lists him as 3B-OF. Can I just change the position I play him at by changing the position box on the lineup card? Will I incur an out-of-position defensive penalty if I do so? Similarly, now that Beltre is back, the Rangers are playing Gallo out in LF, even though Scoresheet lists him as 3B only. Can I play him as OF?

I think (don't quote me) that you can send an email to scoresheet asking them to allow those movements.   At least that's what I remember reading back before this thing started..

Still 7 games up on you people, though the Cleveland Spiders blasted 8 HRs on me in a 17-5 loss. Need to pay attention to my bullpen order.

Damn straight we did.  I still have little to no idea how this works though.  How did Trevor May and Ryan Flaherty get playing time for me when they were still on the farm?

Your starters and bench might of run out of innings at those positions, but I would have to look at your lineup set-up.

That must have been the case.  The Spiders are a little light on production and playing time everywhere.

I lost a game to the Spiders.

I lost two this week to the Spiders.

I scored zero runs in the first 19 innings of the series.

In the 2nd inning of the third game I finally scored on a single, error, passed ball, sac fly.

In the ninth inning of that same game, and my final inning of the week, I scored my second run, a walk off home run for the sole victory this week.

I am in an impressive slide.

I think this is the third time we've had McHugh vs. Keuchel, though it may be the first Keuchel won.

Somehow Altuve is showing up in the undrafted players list. I may put him at the top of my list just to screw with Neil.

Okay, I am probably just dense but can anyone tell me what the characters before a player's name mean?
I've been searching the site but haven't found the decoder ring.

*, # with a '-' modifier.

How do I interpret these?

On the lineup card:

(*) = Lefty
(#) = Switch

not sure what the (-) means.

Time for my "Pride goeth before a fall" moment.

7-0 this week sweeping  Corpse Killers and Futile Gesture to take the top spot in the Ruth Division!

There were some especially bad beatdowns of Futile Gesture.. 10-2, 5-1, and 19(!)-6

Woo hoo!  Got the team running like a well-oiled machine!

This week's 4 game set against Nuclear Subs will be a real test..

Despite some of my pitchers having bad weeks and injuries to Gordon and Pedroia, I'm still 6 games up in my division. Only maybe a game over Nate though. Need to get Sale back on track.

MM, sent you some ideas for a trade.

Any others out there interested in a trade. I'm looking for OF help. I have depth in pitching, both starting and bullpen.

Seriously, MM. I think you've walked me off like 4 times in the past two weeks.

I also replicated real life by getting no hit by Isukama.

Franklin Gutierrez, who I picked up in the 42nd round of the draft, hit 5 home runs this week for some reason.
