Padres get busy
« on: December 19, 2014, 09:12:43 am »
They've acquired Matt Kemp, Wil Myers, Justin Upton, and Derek Norris so far (and maybe others that I've missed). I'd love to see them take down the Dodgers.

Damn, that's pretty cool.  Good for them.  I guess I need to go check their pitching staff out.  I know they had Cashner and Ross.  Any others?  I think they also dealt Street away at the deadline last year.  Think they have the resources to pull off another addition or two...say Scherzer to place at the front end of the rotation and then maybe Soriano for the back end of the pen?

ESPN says that they're working on a deal to re-sign Josh Johnson, although he's still recovering from elbow surgery. Here's what MLBTR says about their pitching:

Quote
Johnson would mark the second high-risk, high-upside arm that GM A.J. Preller has landed this offseason, as the team recently agreed to terms with Brandon Morrow on an incentive-laden one-year deal with a $2.5MM guarantee. Johnson likely wouldn’t be ready until midseason anyhow, but he and Morrow could pair with some combination of Andrew Cashner, Tyson Ross, Ian Kennedy, Jesse Hahn, Robbie Erlin and Odrisamer Despaigne, among others, in a deep rotation mix for the Padres.

Justin Upton

Huh?  I completely missed this.

None of the players they've acquired are overly impressive.  This reminds me of the Blue Jays last year.

Odrisamer Despaigne is a Death Eater. I don't want to be anywhere near He Whose Name Shall Not Be Spoken when he finds out Despaigne's pitching for the Padres.

Justin seems to alternate between great and so-so. BJ alternates between awful and unbearable.

They traded Hahn as part of the Norris deal.

Now I remember they signed Morrow (not a bad deal for what they paid) and forgot Kennedy.  Thanks for doing all the digging up of info.  They have Benoit as well currently as closer.

Also, they should have some pieces to trade now as well with all the new OF help.  Nothing that will bring a King's ransom, but they still have Maybin, Quentin, Seth Smith, Venable, etc.

Venable could be an interesting "buy low" option, assuming the Pads are selling low.

And now the rumor is they're going after Hamels with Myers among the possible tradebait.

Interesting. Given their park, I'd definitely try to stock up on pitching vs. hitting.

But lots of pitchers would want to sign there. No good hitters ever want to sign there, so they have to grow them, or trade for them.

They've added the final piece: The Walrus has landed in San Diego.
