Just saw where Baseball America noted that Denny Walling has retired to spend more time with family. He had been hitting coach for the Orioles' AAA team.

Denny Walling/Phil Garner & Craig Reynolds/Dickie Thon still remains my favorite left side infield platoon on the same team of all time.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

That seems like a lopsided deal. I wish the Astros could've been the team fleecing the A's and M's for Donaldson and Saunders (both of whom reportedly had spats with their GMs) instead of the BJs. Damned unspoken rule against intra-division trades...

Me too. I'll always fondly remember the time he got pissed at some team - Brewers, maybe? - that had several guys doing some dumb-shit celebratory thing every time they got a hit or whatever. I think Wilton struck someone out and got out of a jam, and as he was stomping off the mound, glared over and, with perfect comedic timing and just the right mix of venom and satire, mocked whatever the fuck their stupid gesture was. I think it was something with their fingers over their face making a V-shape or triangle or some shit.

Also, if you don't read David Laurilia's Sunday column and fangraphs, you're missing out.  They're all eclectic and interesting if nothing else.

Relative of a former Astro anyways:

Meet Sarah Hudek, a senior at George Ranch High School outside Houston who will make history today when she officially accepts a baseball scholarship to play at Bossier Parish Community College in Louisiana. The daughter of former MLB pitcher John Hudek, the 5-foot-10 lefty throws around 82 mph, or, per her future coach Aaron Vorachek in an interview with USA Today, “as good, or better, than most boys around here.”

Good on her!!...As I remember it "Hooody"(boy that milo could sure come up with some great nicknames huh?) had that same kind of jerky motion. Hope she does well.
Remember Jesus Alou being called out of the 1st base coaching box to pinch-hit a double vs. the Reds in '79 I think, to win a crucial game, and he patted Morgan on top of the head (ala Benny Hill w/the little bald guy) and Little Joe got pissed.....yeah,that was great.

Have any other teams retired the numbers of confirmed steroid/HGH users? Weird. Pettitte wasn't even all that great either. He was popular with the fans, and he was outstanding in the postseason (for the Yanks, at least...)

Pettitte wasn't even all that great either.

I feel the same way. But, looking it up, he's 3rd all-time on the Yankees list for wins (behind Whitey Ford and Red Ruffing) and holds the team record for career strikeouts. When we think Yankee history, I think we tend to think of their hitters (Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, etc.). Their pitchers don't stand out quite as much, comparatively.

32 people have plaques/memorials at Yankee Stadium: 16 hitters, 7 pitchers, 5 managers, 1 general manager, 2 owners, 2 broadcasters and 1 PA announcer. (Heck, Tino Martinez and Paul O'Neill are recognized out there.)

17 have had their numbers retired: 14 hitters, 3 pitchers (Ford, Guidry, Rivera), 2 managers.

Condolences to family of former #Cubs player Gary Woods, who was scout with White Sox. He passed away Tues. Woods played in Chicago '82-'85.

And with the Astros in '80-'81.

2nd member of that 1980 team to pass away within a short time of one another (though Woods of course spent most of the year at AAA Tucson).

RIP former Astros outfielder Gary Woods, who hit .377 in his September call-up in 1980 that helped the Astros clinch their first division title.

One more footnote to Gary Woods and his Astros career: he was traded to Chicago in late 1981 in exchange for future Dodgers/Pirates/Rockies manager Jim Tracy. Tracy never reached Houston, spending a couple of years in Tucson sandwiched around a season or so playing in Japan.

To this day, I think Woods "tag up" was legit.

Cubs Braves dropped Veras.

"Veras posted an 11.81 ERA in six games [this spring], allowing eight hits, seven runs and seven walks with four strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Most of the damage came in the Grapefruit League opener against the Mets, when he was charged with three hits, five runs and two walks in two-thirds of an inning. Veras allowed four hits, one run and four walks in four innings over his next four appearances before Thursday, when he was again undermined by control issues and gave up one hit, one run, two walks and a hit batter in two-thirds of an inning."

Bass lasts just 2/3 of an inning tonight against Dodgers allowing 8 runs on 6 hits and a walk. Three of the hits were HRs but given the game is being played at the Alamodome I'm guessing at least one (if not all) were cheapies.

Jason Lane allowed 3 homers in a game to the Dodgers yesterday while hitting one of his own. Ugly numbers for the spring: 11.2 IP, 20 H, 11 ER, 5 HR.

Some other former Astros in Padres and Dodgers camps:

  • Brett Wallace (Padres): .381/.435/.429 in 21 ABs.
  • Kiké Hernandez (Dodgers): .262/.279/.524 with 3 HRs in 42 ABs.

Their signing of Olivera probably hurts him. Think their plan is Olivera at 3B, pushing Uribe to expensive utility IF. But I don't know who else he's competing with.

Another Cuban, Alex Guerrero. While he's pretty much been a bust to date, he's had a good enough spring (.364/.382/.545) that he may make the opening day roster and thus the Dodgers won't have to eat what remains of his $28MM contract (Guerrero has this cute little provision in his contract that requires his consent to being sent to the minors).

They also just sent Kimbrel to San Diego. Might Folty be coming back up in the bullpen? How long does he have to stay in the minors after he's been sent down?

Just saw where Baseball America noted that Denny Walling has retired to spend more time with family. He had been hitting coach for the Orioles' AAA team.

They came through Charlotte last year.  The bullpen catcher was nice enough to send him down to see me after the game.  Just told him I was a big Astros fan and wanted to say hello and thanks for '86. He shook my hand and said thanks for the memory.   I was happier to meet him than just about any famous person I've ever encountered.
Yay.

He took a nasty foul tip off of the left collarbone that just wedged itself between his mask and the collarbone. I can't imagine willingly signing up for that kind of abuse. That's why I give HH a wide berth: he must be one crazy motherfucker.

Per this quote, we might see DeShields play in the upcoming series: " Reserve outfielder Delino DeShields is the only player who hasn't started a game yet. Banister said that will likely happen in the near future."

Deshields is still very green, but the Rangers obviously see something.

Latest report I saw said that Banister was "likely" to start him in tomorrow afternoon's game. However given the blowout going on right now (A's up 8-0), I wouldn't be surprised to see him in this game.

And he is. Entered the game in B7 in CF and caught a routine FB in that frame. Got an infield hit in first MLB at bat in T8.

An infield hit against the mop up (in a 10-0 shellacking) pitcher really doesn't impress me. I want to see how he does against a big league starter in three ABs.

Bud bad:

The right-hander, who pitched to a 9.26 ERA this spring, turned in his shortest outing (non-weather related) since 2012 and gave up a career high in earned runs since coming to Baltimore midway through the '12 season. Norris exited after three-plus innings and gave up seven hits, four of which were doubles, in the 66-pitch outing.

I believe he was just activated off the DL. He always had ability but erratic. Somewhat like Villar I think.

Baseball America recently noted that Doug Jones is the new pitching coach at Boise (Rockies' short-season affiliate). He had spent the last 5 years as pitching coach at San Diego Christian College.

Sadly, no photo to confirm if he still has that same mustache.

It's appropriate that he's in the Rockies organization. He can teach their youngsters how to look stunned when the meatsauce they throw right over the plate keeps flying out of the park.

We had tickets to go to the Bulls-Braves game here in Durham today, but exchanged them online this morning because the weather wasn't great. Saw too late that Folty was scheduled to pitch. He had a decent game: 5/6/2/2/3/9, but threw 93 pitches in the 5 innings and lost. He's now 0-3 despite a 2.08 ERA, with 30 K and 10 BB in 21 2/3 IP.

Folty likely to be brought up to start Friday night's game vs Reds.

Yeah, just saw he got a two rbi hit for his first major league hit. Got them back in the game.  His command still looked a little erratic, but it was his first MLB start.

Technically, does that qualify as a throw?

Sure, in the sense that one throws a punch.

That's similar to an infielder with a  submarine throw on a double play at 2B, to give the runner "incentive" to get down.  Something happened previously, and Q said "ok, you're not gonna move..."

Q was involved in some sort of mishap later in the game, too, so there was obviously something larger going on. This "throw" was so blatant that I was surprised that the batter didn't get up and wrap the bat around his head.

Nick Tropeano gets called up from SLC as Matt Shoemaker gets put on bereavement list by Halos.

Nothing shabby about his Angels debut tonight (6/5/0/0/1/5).

C Carlos Perez was the other piece in that Conger deal. So how did his Angel debut (and MLB debut) go tonight? Just a run of the mill 2-4 with the walkoff HR in the bottom of the 9th.

Congrats to Carlos. At least it wasn't against the Astros.

He was at 113 pitches. Mills is a prick for taking him out. He wasn't laboring at all. I watched the game last night. Kluber was magical. I stopped counting swings-and-misses at about 25. He had complete command of his four-seam fastball that he was throwing to both sides of the plate, working in the upper and lower parts of the strike zone. and that devastating cutter he throws to lefties that you give up on as inside before it darts back over the black. It was fun to see a pitcher in such command of a game. The hitters knew what was coming but were powerless to do any damn thing  about it.

Regardless who we kept back then, it still would have meant making room or leaving Tucker in AAA.

The ranger's still have a decision to make when Hamilton is activated. DDJ is exceeding expectations now but it is a long season.  The fact that the ranger's outfielders are generally sucking this year makes it easier for DDJ to stick with them.  He would not be getting these chances with the Astros outfield.

Why would it mean the latter?

The 40 man roster spot occupied by Tucker is the spot cleared by DFAing Torreyes.  So if DeShields had been in that spot instead, DeShields or someone else like Hoes or someone at another positions would still need to be let go to add Tucker.  Alternatively they'd have to leave Tucker at Fresno.

Right.  But they could have left off Hoes or Dominguez or one of the million pitchers they have.  Adding Deshields by no means they would have had to leave Tucker at AAA.

Bruce Chen DFA'd by Indians.

C'mon, somebody needs to pick him up--just two more teams and he'll catch up to Dotel.

And will not happen as he announces retirement after 17 seasons.

Brandon Barnes, who was hitting just .205 in the very friendly confines of Albuquerque, gets called up by the Rockies. He'll be replacing the demoted Drew Stubbs. Whatever offense Barnes does generate, however, is more than likely to exceed that of Stubbs who was batting just .118 and his whifferific 31 Ks in 51 ABs.

Stubbs is earning $5.8MM this season.

Avert your eyes if tired of the DDS posts.

Rangers’ DeShields earning additional time.

Quote
Delino DeShields won the game Wednesday for the Texas Rangers with his range defensively in front of the fabled Green Monster at Fenway Park...

The return of Josh Hamilton will affect how often he plays going forward, but he has forced club brass to consider ways to get him in the lineup.

...he leads the Rangers with 11 steals and is first in the majors in stole-base percentage among runners with at least 10 attempts, but he also was batting .364 in his last nine games for a handy .271 average entering Thursday.

He came the Rangers in the Rule 5 draft with the label of not having a good work ethic. That has been dispelled by how the way he worked when he was stuck on the bench has translated to his on-field performance.

Barnes went 4-4 yesterday.  Though a couple of the hits were boarder line errors.  They all look like line drives in the box score.

Evan Grant of DMN says DDS moving into the leadoff slot one of the main reasons Rangers have gone from 8 games under in early May to above .500 for first time since June of 2014:

Quote
DeShields has started eight of the last 10 games in the No. 1 spot; the Rangers are 6-2 in those games and are averaging 5.8 runs per game.

This hamstring pull happened 1/2 inning after he got thrown out at second because he forgot how many outs there were.

DeShields was on 1B when Fielder hit a ground ball to the second baseman.  DeShields assumed they'd go to 2B, so he slid late, trying to take out the SS.  But the second baseman couldn't get the ball out of his glove, and had to go to 1B.  DeShields was well past the bag at 2B, and the Twins threw back from 1B to get him off the bag.  Not sure if DeShields thought he was already out or just was way past the bag on the slide.

Bud still bad and possibly in danger of losing job in starting rotation after being battered by Rangers Monday night:

The righty, who lasted six innings, saw his ERA rise to 6.79 and continues to search for a way to turn things around as the calendar inches toward July.

But the ultra-competitive righty also knows that the first-place O's have a current pitching logjam -- with guys like Kevin Gausman, Mike Wright and Tyler Wilson at Triple-A -- and Norris will have to do better than Monday's showing.

Norris is 2-7 on the year and has three quality starts in 11 games.

Without a real weapon to get lefties out, and problems pitching deep into games, it always seemed inevitable that he'd end up in the bullpen. Maybe his heater would tick up there and he'd do really well.

I never understood his success as a starter given his ability to only throw two pitches. Now, both were plus at one time. I always thought that he should be in the bullpen.

The season has not been kind to Jarred Cosart (even if some of it was self-inflicted):

  • The betting thing got him fined by MLB.
  • The vertigo thing got him DL'd for six weeks
  • He gets activated today and in his first start back gets blasted by the Cubs, giving up 7 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks in 1 2/3 innings.
  • Immediately after that torching at Wrigley he gets demoted to the minors.

I'm really happy for JD. Too bad it didn't work out for him and the Astros. No one to blame, he was given ample opportunity in Houston. Who knew he would figure it out eventually?

He never got a chance last spring.  Even after revamping his swing and performing well in winter ball.  He didn't make a minor adjustment, he completely changed his swing.   I'm happy for JD, but the Astros brass wrote him off before the spring started and they paid for it.   It's not like they had this year's outfield blocking him.  Last year's opening day lineup included Guzman at first with Grossman and Hoes in the outfield.  The front office has made some real good moves but this clearly was a mistake.  I would guess that after Luhnow retires and reflects on his career, JD will be in his top 3 list of mistakes.   Not knocking Luhnow, everyone makes mistakes.  Heck considers Trout a mistake and he had 20 other teams in the same boat.

Pence returned to the Giants last night and made a heck of a catch and assist to nail Granderson at the plate.  However, if you really want to be amazed, check out their Friday giveaway.

J.D. was put on waivers and not one team claimed him. Not even Detroit. And then they only brought him in as a free agent bc of Clark. Seems like most of the league thought J.D. was worthless and they've been proven wrong.

Maybe JD had to go through that to change what he was doing.

He made his adjustments after that waiver and before the Astros released him.    JD was well on his way to resurrecting his career prior to being released.

Adding a bat (ice cream man Jesus Montero) and Happ wasn't going to pitch this weekend anyway. Happ eligible to be recalled on July 19.

"Well on his way" based on what? It's certainly true that the Astros hardly gave him any ABs in 2014 Spring Training, but seriously man, every marginal MLB hitter shows up in March with a "revamped" swing. Brett Wallace did it annually. And while I don't understand why the Astros straight-up released JD (being "nice" to give him an opportunity elsewhere?), there was probably nothing that any non-time-traveler could have seen by that March that indicated he would go from a career 88 OPS+ guy to a 150 OPS+. I'm pretty sure the Tigers didn't expect it either - they were probably just looking for AAA roster depth.

He had already had good success with the changes at winterball.  Came to spring and they just didn't give him many at bats then dumped him.  He absolutely crushed the ball (knocking 10 Hrs in 17 games) for the Tigers at AAA from and was called up on April 21st.  It's not like he spent many months working things out in the the Tigers organization, he had already fixed his issues while he was with the Astros.  "Well on his way" based on he required no time with the Tigers to start performing well.

I was following JD pretty closely that spring after reading articles like this.   I was surprised when he wasn't really getting any at bats.

And correct me if I'm wrong on this, was he not on a minor league contract that year?  Could they not have simply sent him to OKC and released him from there if it wasn't working out?  Of course that would have required them to give up on the large Mexican a few weeks earlier.

The Orioles DFA'd Wesley Wright today.

Baltimore didn't get much return on their $1.7MM investment:

Quote
Wright made only two appearances for the Orioles in April before going on the disabled list with a strained left trapezius muscle. He allowed one run and two hits in 1 2/3 innings. Wright lost velocity and was ineffective during his injury rehab assignment at Triple-A Norfolk, allowing 10 earned runs (11 total) and 15 hits in 11 2/3 innings. He walked seven batters (two intentionally) and struck out five.

Wigginton is the only MLB vet who attended my alma mater, the University of North Carolina-Asheville. I'd heard him say that it was his dream to return here to manage the team. I wonder if it still is. Anyway, in doing a quick spot of wikisearch (to see if he already had in fact coached here), I found this gem:

On December 20, 2006, Wigginton was forced to handle the delivery of his son Cannon at home when his wife Angela went into labor unexpectedly. Following the instructions of an operator on 9-1-1, he delivered the baby in a bedroom closet of their North Carolina home and tied off the umbilical cord with one of his shoelaces.

He always did have good hands, didn't he?

I remember hearing that he had delivered one of his kids, but hadn't heard the details.  That's nuts.  I was about five minutes from having to deliver one of mine in a car at 2 am, lucky for him we made it to the hospital just in time; I don't know that I would have been that resourceful.

Bourne was just traded to the Braves with Nick Swisher by the Indians for Chris Johnson.  Braves wanted the clubhouse presence.  Indians wanted a right-handed bat.  Most it's a large contract swap.

Brown Skirts anoint Brett Wallace.

In 55 plate appearances with the Padres, Wallace has quietly put up a .347/.418/.612.    He had an RBI double against the Rangers tonight.

I saw Brett play in high school and felt then that he could hit in the professional ranks, and he has at every level except the show, at least until now. I hope that he's learned how to make the adjustments that a big league hitter has to constantly make in response to pitchers pitching him up and in or down and away. I wish the guy much success.

Brian Bogusevic has made it back to the majors, for the first time since his Cubs stint in 2013. This time he's on the Phillies - he hit .296/.359/.424 for their AAA team.

I'll never forget that walk-off Grand Slam he hit off Marmol.

Didn't Carlos Lee hit an extra inning walk-off slam to end the Biggio 3,000 hit game.

Didn't Carlos Lee hit an extra inning walk-off slam to end the Biggio 3,000 hit game.

Yes he did, 11th inning.

He has 7 for the year, but that includes 2 he hit with the Astros. He is off to a very nice start for Milwaukee, though - all while playing center field. Be interesting to see how long that lasts...

Meanwhile, Brett Wallace had a walk-off FC for the Padres.

He's got more WAR with the Brewers than Gomez has with the Astros.  But not as many as FIERS!

Don't look now, but J.A. Happ has been pitching lights out for the Piroots since he was acquired from the Scurvy Dogs. He's gonna be another Ray Searage reclamation project. That guy is an awesome pitching coach.

Fill me in.

There was a post in about 2006 where BD implied that Kip Wells got blood clots because he was on steroids. While the thread apparently didn't make the migration, strosrays troll step by step did come from that thread.

Correction: that was my home address. :)  I wouldn't do the same thing today because I've grown up a bit-- a lot. You people dealt with me at my lowest points,  including lots of drug abuse, some drug-addled posts and two suicide attempts, which turned around thanks to recovery really beginning in 2007 toward the end of that year. It's amazing what a week in jail will do for you. I had to finally surrender in order to achieve the peace and tranquility that I've enjoyed and grown to love over the years. I don't miss drinking one bit, and i damn sure don't regret stopping the pills, if for no other reason that I wanted to remember what I did, and too often, I had unaccounted for time periods where I don't remember anything.

Had a buddy who got a blood clot in his shoulder in college. He had just made the team at Auburn as a walk on pitcher.  Ended his career.  Was not on steroids.  Sometimes freaky things just happen.

On a side note, I sat behind a Braves scout in the stands at a Gville game not long ago.  He said the Braves lost that trade.  He said Folty will never amount to much because of his attitude.  He had no shortage of opinions.

One other thing he said was that the Braves were doing a horrible job of drafting the last few years.  He said that Astros have been killing it in the draft.  He actually said something like this "They guy they have now (JL) knows how to draft.  Nobody likes him, but he knows how to draft. "  He was talking pretty loudly and Mike Elias was sitting two rows in front of him.  I wonder if Elias heard the guys comments.

The guy was a career baseball guy.  He had played minor league ball, got into coaching/managing in the minors and had been scouting.  He was in his late 70s/early 80s.  He was more interested in telling stories than watching players.
Always ready to go to a game.

Well this thread has taken a strange turn.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Yes, absolutely. Keith is so fucking awesome. I think a lot of people now just look at him as some sort of avuncular symbol of poor health practices, or something.

I am here to say, there was nothing avuncular him. The man meant no good, and there was nothing cuddly about the journey he undertook, or the way he chose to live. Goddamn it, it was beautiful, but it was not nice. There was a palpable darkness ... anyone who was there to witness it can remember ... the dark undertow he exerted, and you had to forego everything, including any sort of happy ending, to follow. But if you did follow, there was always the chance you might make it out the other side. More or less intact, and understanding ... understanding what it meant to throw all your caution away, and just hope that somehow, some way, you might make it out the other side, in one piece, with all the understanding of what you'd gone through, in order to get to that place.

It is all a bunch of bullshit, to most people, on the surface. But the reality is, it was really, really dark. Ask Gram Parsons. The ghost of him could tell you. The road to hell is paved with the bones of those who tried to follow Keith Richards along his path.

I wonder if he wrote a sonnet about it.

Against that time, if ever that time come,
When I shall see thee frown on my defects,
When as thy love hath cast his utmost sum,
Called to that audit by advis'd respects;
Against that time when thou shalt strangely pass,
And scarcely greet me with that sun, thine eye,
When love, converted from the thing it was,
Shall reasons find of settled gravity;
Against that time do I ensconce me here,
Within the knowledge of mine own desert,
And this my hand, against my self uprear,
To guard the lawful reasons on thy part:
To leave poor me thou hast the strength of laws,
Since why to love I can allege no cause.
Everyone's talking, few of them know
The rest are pretending, they put on a show
And if there's a message I guess this is it
Truth isn't easy, the easy part's shit
