Friday Afternoon (Cheap) Beer Thread
« on: October 10, 2014, 12:52:16 pm »
Either out of necessity, or as a cheap thrill, sometimes some of us are compelled to go the economy route on our beer.

I don't mean it as "the worst beer you ever drank ... " Buckhorn, Schaeffer Light, Carling Black Label ... we've all been there a time or two. What I mean is a "cheap" beer you can tolerate in a pinch, maybe even like a little.

For me, there isn't much better after a long day working in the yard than walking up to the 7-11 and getting a couple of Bud Ice in the 22 0z. bottles, preferably right out of the ice tub. At $1.59 apiece, a really economic choice. It is light and refreshing and at least non-offensive. If the store is out of Ice, my backup is MGD in the 24 oz. bottles. Same price.
Shall we go, you and I, while we can,
Through the transitive nightfall of diamonds?

Lone Star, without a doubt.  I'll drink Coors Light in a pinch if Lone Star isn't available.

I've heard that the "new" (read: old) formula of Schlitz is supposed to be decent.  Anybody tried it?
Drinking for two.

I love how Miller Lite went to the old school label.  Looks great after a decade a electric blue.  Definitely makes it taste batter.

Just a kiss of hops.

I'll second the Lone Star nomination

Miller Lite in the aluminum containers has come to Panama. I thought of you when I saw them the other day.

I pretty much always drink Atlas but will certainly drink Balboa when needed. I don't care for Soberana at all but I was once in a place on the Caribbean coast (where Soberana is favored) and it was the only beer they had. It's amazing how much better Soberana tastes when it's the only beer available.

That's why the single greatest individual beer I ever had was a Lone Star.

Miller Lite, Budweiser or Busch Light, usually consecutively.
Don't think twice, it's alright.

Pearl Light in the brown barrel bottles.
Where do you find that?

I remember where I was the day Pearl went up to $4.99 for a 12-pack from $4.79. There really ain't a whole lot of cheap beer left.

Thirty years ago or so, when I was living in Oklahoma, I had to buy my beer from a liquor store unrefrigerated. The law states that any beer over 3.2 percent ABV had to be sold in a liquor store at room temperature. You could go to a convenience store and buy "near beer" versions of Coors, Miller, Bud, and the like. Or go the liquor store route. I used to buy a lot of Pearl in those brown barrel bottles, and for every six pack of "cheap" Pearl, I'd buy a sixer of "pricey" Moosehead.
