Stanton

Yikes: Giancarlo Stanton just took a fastball to the head. It looked like it might have deflected off of his hand/wrist first; if so, that probably took a little bit of the steam off of it, but he was still taken off the field on a stretcher. Hope it's not too serious.

It is pretty bad.  Laceration that needed stitches, multiple fractures and dental damage.

Chase Headly also took one off the chin last night.
Always ready to go to a game.

Pitch was clocked a 88. Thankfully a below average FB.

And was given strike 2 because in trying to avoid being hit his bat came through the strike zone. His replacement was hit on the next pitch and was given strike 3 because in trying to avoid being hit his bat came through the strike zone. Weird way to strike somebody out.

So the lesson is:  Don't swing at pitches that are headed for your face.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Or if you do, be sure to make contact.  I wonder if Vlad would have hit that ball?

Jesus Alou would have. I remember more than one occasion on which he protected himself by hitting the ball.

Moises occasionally did that too, and hit the ball into the seats.

Neither here nor there, but I enjoyed the read from CJ Nitkowski "The Other Side of a Batter Getting Hit in the Face."

Also neither here nor there, but I am not surprised in the least by Leyland actions...
