Opening Day 2015
« on: September 16, 2014, 07:54:53 pm »
I just got the email and they're selling group tix for next season. The first game is Monday, April 6 against Cleveland. We'll need 20 at least. Who's in? Where do you want to sit and what's the price point that makes you drop out?
I'm in love with rock and roll and I'll be out all night.

I really liked the seats we had last year.  I'm in for at least two.

Same routine for me. I'll take two then give them up to the inevitable folks who didn't get any. Or I'll make it.

I can't really commit to attending yet, for a couple of reasons, but I can commit to two tickets, if you need to meet the minimum.

I've bought the tickets. I had to make an executive decision and I'm prepared to take the heat for it.

I opted for seats closer to the field. They're $52 each. We're in Section 133, Rows 20-24, 1st 4 seats from the aisle and Row 24 has the first 5 seats from the aisle, so we're all in a block. If we'd gone back to the area from last year, we'd have been much more spread out.

Thanks, everyone. Yes, Biz, I did reciprocate, sort of. His name is Daniel.

And this is as good a place as any to mention that my Centenario has peeled off four straight wins and over the space of maybe three weeks went from ninth place and out of the playoff picture to second where we finished the apertura, the first half of the season. So we're in the playoffs with a #2 seed.

It's funny how life evolves. There are two professionals that are now important to me, to whom previously I gave not a thought: a pediatrician and a malpractice attorney.

Maybe it was the modern equivalent of a virgin birth.

And anyway, I'm still freaked out by Austro expecting a grandchild.  This is personal.

I received the tickets yesterday. Do you want them mailed to you, do you want to meet at Spanish Flower before the game and pick them up there, or some other plan?

Because of a heavy recent travel schedule, I can't make the game, but I've given my tickets to EasTexAstro, who will probably meet you at Spanish Flowers.

Typically it's noon at the Tall Texan and 1pm at Spanish Flower. Lunch normally lasts a couple of hours or so and then it moves to the Flying Saucer.

Perfect. I can't check in and ditch my car until 3pm anyway, so I can meet folks at Spanish Flower, then check in and walk to Flying Saucer (I'm assuming it's the one on Main and Capitol).

Ok, Monday's schedule:

noon at Alice's Tall Texan, 4904 N Main St for frosty goblets of Shiner Bock, one of the best values you'll ever find. Cash only.

1pm at Spanish Flowers, 4701 N Main St for cabrito, etc.

3pm(ish) at Flying Saucer, 705 Main St.

5pm(ish) waltzing on down to the MMPUS

I'd really, really, really prefer to hand out tickets at the three stops BEFORE getting to the ballpark. If it's at all possible, please meet me at one of those places to get yours. If I'm ciphering correctly, I've got tickets for Sphinx (1), HH (1), Ebby (1), Homer (2) and Chuck (2), and I think I've got tickets available from Das (1) and Ty (2).

I'm quite looking forward to it.  I've pretty much decided to skip my french class, so I will be at the Flower. I may be able to sell another ticket, if you want.  I will let you know.

That's them.  They're sort of an acoustic act and I don't think they've played together in years.  But Kevin is my best friend since back in the sandbox, so I'd go if I could.  I don't know how far it is from you or whether or not you'd find it worth it.  Just thought I'd pimp them if you had nothing better to do.

On another local act note though, Kevin's wife plays in an all-female band called Undercover Betty.  They're pretty good, and she can flat out shred.

Yup.  I've seen 3 or 4 Astros wins in Philly and DC over the last few years.  I fully expect to see at least one in Baltimore this year as well.

What a great game...playoff atmosphere.  It feels like the Orange and navy have almost completely taken over the mud and blood.  But holy hell, the concession lines were awful and the service at them was one of the worst experiences of my life.  I've never seen so many people just standing around behind the counter doing nothing.

On the field, the product couldn't have been better.  It kills me there's a day off today.

Yeah, when I got a hot dog, the cashier waited a couple of minutes for someone else to bring her a dry towel to wipe off her (fully functional) cash register before she would ring me up.  I could've just walked off with my food.

Missed everyone yesterday, but had to go with some work friends. Jack made it through all nine innings, a marked improvement from last year.

Had fun meeting a few of you at the Saucer.

As for the game, Aramark continues to be a joke.  Just ridiculous concession lines, and they took beer from 7.50 to 8.25.

The new Scoreboard graphics look great too.  The all green kinda old time look is really clean.

Great performance from Keuchel.

Lineup looks much better, although I dont really get batting Valbuena 3rd.  His career best year is .249 with 121 homers, what am I missing here.  He played well in the field though.

Yes, that was frustrating. I thought there was a rule that you could not walk down during the middle of an at-bat, but apparently is not at all discouraged.

The parking, concessions, and restrooms were all an extreme clusterfuck last night.  It's almost like the Astros staff forgot how to handle sellout crowds.

There was an "usher" at the top but he must not know the rule.  He told me, "you can go sit."   I told him, "I'll wait, I don't like people standing in the aisles."  I don't think he understood.  There have been some sections in the past, where the usher is very adamant about following the rules.

I just wish people would look at their tickets before going into a section.  Would save them a lot of time and less chances of spilling their beer.

Thanks to RB for taking care of everything and providing perfect weather as well as an impressive victory. In fact, I had such a good time that I decided to stick around for a while longer: the next generation of Astros fan is on his way. I was hoping he'd share my birthday, but that's looking less and less likely now.

I am so jealous.

Just in case anybody is still wondering, the little guy arrived this morning at 12:44am (45 minutes earlier and the two of us share birthdays), and I'm officially a grandfather. He came in at 7 lb 7oz and 20 1/4", with only slightly more hair than I have. As I mentioned to my wife as we were walking to get some dinner last night, 41 years ago when I first laid my head down on a pillow in Houston, I certainly wouldn't have imagined that my first grandchild would be born only a few hundred yards away.

Outstanding.

OutSTANding! I gave Daniel the news and he replied with a delighted shriek. And then he jammed the cat's tail in his mouth.

Thanks for all of the good wishes, everybody. We're very excited. I promise to see that he is brought up as an Astros fan, and that I'll substitute Bud Selig's name for the villain in any stories I read to him.

I believe his supervillain handle is "Fucking" Bud "Cocksucking" Selig, so you should definitely stick with that. The kid will love your stories and will retell them often.
