Is child abuse the same as negligence?

Just read this... "“Arrest of Adrian Peterson (reported by @MarkBermanFox26) stems from the disciplining of a son with a switch, source says. He’s been indicted.”
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

I think I might have been abused as a child. My parents used a belt on me. They used to spank my behind with it when I misbehaved. No wonder I turned out like this. Fuck.

Fucking animals. And now there's a woman who it appears killed and buried her two-year-old son in Austin a couple of months ago. They'd been living out of her car, but she's been Facebooking about how she's pregnant and can't wait to see her new baby. As you might imagine, the ex-husband is a real piece of shit too. The kid never had a chance.

Fucking animals.

I was spanked growing up and it wasn't a big deal. I also have an (almost) 4 year old son. Reading that article was sickening on multiple levels.

I couldn't make it through the 2nd text/quote..  I got spanked as a kid, but that is something completely different.

I wanted to give Adrian Peterson the benefit of the doubt on this, thinking it might be one of his several baby mammas stirring up shit. But, after reading his own account of the "whooping," it seems like he is just another all-brawn-no-brains miscreant with shitty judgement and no impulse control.

AP is strong enough that his handshake is routinely described as "crushing".

I somehow think that spanking with an open palm would have been MORE than enough "discipline".

I sincerely hope he is convicted.

Cris Carter kind of goes off.

I hate to be cynical. I hate to be cynical. But the first thing that occurred to me after reading the Wilf's statement/excuse, was that getting smoked by NO had more to do with the reinstatement than any concerns for due process. Or, you know, the child.

Of course, that's probably not it.

Jon Stewart: The NFL doesn't know what it's doing

" ... particularly galling to Stewart was the Minnesota Vikings’ decision to deactivate Adrian Peterson after his arrest on a child-abuse charge, then activate him, the deactivate him until his legal case is resolved. The last move came only after sponsors, most significantly Anheuser-Busch, applied pressure.

“How crazy is this?” Stewart asked. “A company that sells alcohol is the moral touchstone of the NFL. Alcohol, maybe one of the only substances that is proven scientifically to increase the likelihood of domestic abuse. That company is saying to the NFL, ‘You guys got a real problem here.’”

Also priceless... from Bill Simmons' column today:

Quote
Q: Who am I?
1. I have lots of raw talent and good intentions but suffer at least two or three major blunders a year

2. My fans had high expectations for me when I took over but I have disappointed them for the past six years.

3. There are large factions of people that hate me (especially in Texas)

4. The media loves to criticize me while taking tons of cheap shots.

5. I may have checked out for the year

6. Because of my contract my team is stuck with me for two more years.

Am I ….

A. Tony Romo
B. Barack Obama

Latest on AP...apparently he showed up for his court date today having "smoked a little weed", violating the terms of his bond. He's reportedly been arrested again.

Peterson should have smoked a little weed before he decided to whack his kid's nuts with a swtich. Then he could have just told the kid he wouldn't share his Ritz Crackers and Cheese-Whiz if the kid didn't start to behave.

I hope it's not lost on Peterson or the NFLPA that they are seeking legal redress for excessive discipline.  Too bad his kid didn't get a chance to appeal to a neutral arbitrator.

So what does the arbitrators decision on Rice do to Peterson's chances?  Follow-up: how much do the NFL's lawyers suck?

Does it affect Peterson at all?  The NFL got blasted on the Rice case because they punished him once then wanted to punish him again for the same offense.  That's not the case with Peterson.

Agreed.  But Peterson is arguing excessive punishment, and can now point to 2 games being the amount for cold-cocking a grownup...

I guess the other side of that is "they wanted to give him more, but shot their wad in their pants while their zipper was stuck."

Of course.  But the precedent was set and upheld in arbitration.

Agreed.  But Peterson is arguing excessive punishment, and can now point to 2 games being the amount for cold-cocking a grownup...

I thought the issue was also being punished twice for the same thing.  There was some sort of agreement that AP would be placed onto the commissioner's list until the criminal process was worked out and that would be the punishment.  Then, Goodell turned around and suspended him again once the plea deal was entered.

There was no precedent on the amount of punishment set.  The arbitor simply upheld the prohibition on double jeopardy.

Pendergast has a good post on the subject this morning, but I fully agree with this quote from Rusty:

"[Goodell is] doing it solely in response to the human cry regarding [his] screw-ups. I've said all along that [Peterson] has been thrown into the maelstrom of something that is not comparable to what he did but because the NFL looked so bad in the way they handled [Ray Rice]...they just flat-out lied about what they knew when they imposed their first punishment [on Rice], and when they got their hand caught in the cookie jar, they decided to swing at everybody."

This is obviously what is happening.  Goodell is (irony intended) ducking and weaving to keep his job.  So far, he looks more like Sideshow Bob.

Rusty gonna rusty.

My fascination is whether Rusty said "Hue and Cry" and the transcription is wrong or vice versa.

Saw that too.  I'm guessing "hue and cry", which is a well known phrase, and also the name of an 80s one-hit-wonder from Scotland*.

Former FBI Director Robert Mueller has completed his investigation into the NFL's actions over Ray Rice:

Quote
Robert Mueller’s account of the NFL’s investigation of the incident is a tale of internal miscommunication, egregious misunderstandings and an uncooperative New Jersey police force. But it clears NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and senior league officials of allegations of having seen and ignored the graphic video, which is at the center of the case.

Basically, the NFL didn't act quickly enough or push hard enough to find out exactly what happened, but otherwise was accurate in its claims of what it knew (or didn't know) and when.  No mention of whether their lack of action was accidental or on purpose.  They've been told to pull their socks up.

So that's that, then.

Now the Colts' Josh McNary has been charged with rape.  Let's see how the league and the Colts handle this with the AFC Championship game coming up on Sunday.

McNary (who is from Houston, BTW) has been placed on the exempt list, the same status that Peterson occupied during his legal trouble.

Oh look, the NFL had the photos of the horrific injuries Greg Hardy inflicted on his girlfriend back in April.  Nice to see that they've got this whole domestic violence thing sorted out, then.

The NFL suspended him for 10 games which was more than anyother player had been suspended for similar actions by a long shot. The suspension was reduced to 4 games due to the fact that it happened under the previous CBA.  The only group that can legally do anything is the Cowboys who could release him.  However, they would probably still have to pay him his salary.

Good summary of situation here.

Karma: The Cowboys are 0-4 when Hardy plays.

Fuck 'em.

Thanks.  I guess the overarching question is whether a 10-game suspension is appropriate punishment.  The last paragraph of the article being relevant in this regard:

Quote
One more thing (and this is a bit of a digression). Lots of Cowboy players love their moms, wives, sisters and daughters. While we often hear the party line that players rally around an embattled teammate, you have to imagine that a lot of Cowboy players are troubled, if not sickened, working side by side with Hardy. Imagine if your office at work was beside a guy who did what Hardy did. Uncomfortable to say the least.

I don't have to imagine it, because I know that such a man would not be working at my office; he'd be fired.
