Houston Restaurant Weeks
« on: August 01, 2014, 04:08:19 pm »
Expanded and improved, it's back again.  Tonight through Sept 1, you get to enjoy a special, prix fixe menu at some swanky restaurants, and generate money for the Houston Food bank in the process.

I'm kicking off tonight at Étoile, who's dinner menu reads top to bottom fabulous.  I may have to go there more than once.

How was it?

Delicious!

Also, they've poached the bartenders from Mazzantini, so the drinks are great - especially if you like bourbon.

51Fifteen for us tonight.

Is that in the old Ruggles space? Was just looking it up and hadn't realized that Ruggles Grill shut down. That was a go to when I was growing up when we wanted to come into the city for a "fancy" dinner. Getting old.

Thanks.  I've got a 10-year anniversary this Thursday and we're thinking about making reservations.  I hadn't heard of it until you posted this topic (the wife LOVES French cuisine).

We even had a (very) French waiter, Didier.  Food was awesome.  Wine list has a number of reasonably priced (<$40 ) options, and skyrockets from there.  Great atmosphere and service.

I think of Ruggles as a new up and comer who may turn out to be something someday

Both are on my hit-list, would love to know what you think.

In regard to 51Fifteen - food was good, service was good.  There were not a lot of people there.  If you go, I recommend asking for a seat by the window.  The view is the Galleria, but it is still nice to have a good window seat.

In regard to the food, everything was good - no one complained.  One comment was made about not really tasting lobster in the appetizer.  I ordered the Vietnamese meatballs, they were good.  The salad looked really good also.

I had the scallops - not a usual choice for me but I wanted something different - they were good.  I do think it is paired rather oddly with the andouille sausage risotto, but it was good.  If I had to choose again, I'd go for the Braised Pork Osso Bucco.

The chocolate cake and lemon tart were both good.

I'd stay away from the Chardonnay unless you like a fruity wine.

I'd go again.

Thanks!  I love scallops, but how you passed up the pork osso bucco in the first place is beyond me!  :)

I typically avoid chardonnay...and merlot (and pino noir).

Wasn't bad...  I dug the interior which has a sharp, modern "diner" feel to it.  Not sure how many people frequent here on the weekend, but there were maybe 6 other people in the place on a Monday evening.

The food was nice, although not earth-shattering.  I had the pot roast and the wife had the trout.  The starters (popcorn shrimp on chili-aioli and Caesar salad) were ok. Although the watermelon bits with the shrimp was a pleasant surprise as a pairing.

The butterscotch pudding dessert was awesome, but I'm a butterscotch pudding fan from way back.

All in all, like Lucille's in the Museum District (which I prefer to BFD) it's high end comfort food.  Not sure if I'll go back on the regular menu, but would recommend it this month.

Just had lunch at Table on Post Oak.  Layout waaaay better than when it was Philippe's (you don't feel like your sharing the next table's meal).  Food was delish.  Me: beet and goat cheese salad; crab cake; and peach parfait.  Mrs Limey:  shrimp ceviche; beef short rib ravioli; and berry frangipane.

I'm sure the non-HRW price-point is prohibitive for anything other than business / special occasions, but it's good to know that it would be worth it (just as Philippe proved the opposite).

It did, but most of the Ruggles places went under due to the owner's malfeasance.  I think his ex-wife got the rights to use the Ruggles name for the Ruggles Green chain.

Me, too. On both Merlot and Pinot. However I drink a lot of Chilean Carmenere which I understand is a grape similar to Merlot and originally from Bordeaux.

The disservice that movie did to merlot's reputation is impressive.

I agree that most California merlot's are overly sweet fruit-bombs, but I've had several very nice French merlots.

The raviolis was sort of open, like small pasta cups, with the meat inside.  It actually tasted a lot like a beef pot pie, substituting pasta for pastry.

What's your favorite pinot?  It's a nice change of pace for me, but not my go-to.

I love a Emeritus and Paradise Ridge. But then, I also like La Crema and Mark West on the less expensive side. I think Pinots re perfect summer reds.

LOVE Caracol.  Hugo's is another great HRW place.  They don't half-ass the menus, and offer three different drink pairings (red, white and tequila) to match.
Drinking for two.

I've only been to the bar, and was not impressed with the bar menu (I didn't eat) nor the drink menu.  I also found the atmosphere somewhat antiseptic.  Everyone I know who's been there says it's great.  FML

I went once before.  I have a friend that loves their happy hour.  The food is good.  Beware if you are coming down Shepherd, lost of drainage construction right there.

I love the cozy atmosphere and have always had a delicious meal.

Frankly, I don't think I've ever done "restaurant week" anywhere.  Certainly, I've been to restaurants during restaurant week, including last Saturday at Max and Julie, but have never actually ordered off the "restaurant week" menu. I am a dumb consumer.

I more or less agree with this sentiment but feel like the price point is higher than the high quality, solid - but unremarkable - food that I've enjoyed there.   Maybe I just was gouged on a special that  failed to impress on a few visits though.  There was one time I ordered an off the menu filet special that was more remisicient of beef and broccoli than any offering at such an establishment should care to be.

I've often wanted to go for just a stiff drink and a burger at the bar but have still not with no one to blame but myself.

Their standard lunch deal is very good. I think it's a three course menu for $25.

Went to the Bird and the Bear for dinner tonight.  I was ok with my meal, nothing bad but nothing that wold have me going back there.  Meanwhile, Mrs Limey's chicken dish showed up undercooked (she's steadfast about cutting through chicken to make sure it's cooked).  They happily took it away and we were cool with that...until they brought back the same piece of chicken.  WTF?  Where on earth do they get the idea that a customer should eat off the same plate that's had undercooked chicken on it (it came back on top of the same rice etc. that it had originally been served on)?  It was supposed to be stuffed with spinach and cream cheese, all of which was now missing (presumably lost in the re-cooking process).

The waitress seemed confused when we sent it away (again) and told her not to bother with the rest of our meal.  They served us dessert anyway, and then comped the whole thing including cocktail, but that was a very nice way of closing of the barn door.

I've been interested to try that place, and now I won't be going back.  Shame.  All they had to do

I've heard several less than stellar reviews of that place.  I'm not much of a fan of Ouisie's either. I've never had anything that was particularly bad, and their shrimp and grits is very good, but I just always find the food boring for its alleged sophistication.

In 1989, Oussie's was the best restaurant in Houston, and I will always love it for that.  I like the new Oussie's ok, and am indifferent to the Bird and the Bear.

I loved the Bird when I went, granted it has been awhile.  Had one of the best cheesecakes EVER.

I always liked Ouisie's for the food, but not the atmosphere or (latterly) the prices.  Under-cooked chicken aside, I was underwhelmed by my selections of crab cakes, oscar-topped* snapper and chocolate mousse.  All were ok, but merely a shade above bland.

* Since when are mushrooms the predominant ingredient in an oscar-topping?  It was marked on the menu simply as "seared red snapper oscar", which to mean means topped with crab and asparagus in a béarnaise sauce.  There was a little bit of crab and a lot of mushrooms, no sauce, and the asparagus was served, battered and fried, on the side.  I don't care for mushrooms and am frequently irritated when presented with "stealth" mushrooms that - had they been disclosed on the menu - would have driven me to make a different choice.  At least the ones here were so prominent as to be easily separated from the fish and the two or three chunks of flavour-free crab.  Regardless, I think that the lack of the rich, buttery sauce was a major contributing factor to the blandness of the dish, and mushrooms are no cure for blandness, whether you like them or not.

Haven't found a place to do HRW yet, but we did run out to Inn At Dos Brisas for brunch yesterday.  Because they'd had a large party eat early, we were the only people in the dining room at noon.  The food was excellent, but being able to sit at the bar and chat with the staff while getting their full attention was a treat.

Plus, it's pretty hard to beat a 64 degree egg on top of truffled polenta.
Drinking for two.

Inn at Dos Brisas is not just a hidden gem, it's a freaking buried treasure.  It's the best meal I've ever eaten.

I was at Caracol last night, in the side room at a dinner.  It's terrific.

Went for lunch on Saturday with BatGirl.  That food is damn good!  I'd go again regardless of the reason.

Also went to Mr. Peeples on Thursday for lunch.  The food was good, I also heard their Sunday Brunch is good.

There's so much of a 70s disco vibe at Mr. Peeples that it could cause a riot at a White Sox game.

Hatch chiles are back.  That means the green chile cheeseburgers at Whataburger!

Are you sure? I don't think they do them every year. I know they had them last year but I don't remember them in 2012. I hope so though.

I'm eating one right now.  I *hope* those are green chiles.
