I'm thinking that this shift thing, where they move the base runners from the right side of the infield to the left side, has real promise.

That was a great AB by Springer. Got down 0-2, then took three breaking balls before ripping the 3-2 FB into left.

Nats got lucky twice in one inning - first on Carter's moon shot, which "took a sharp left turn" as the Nats TV guys called it, and went foul, then on Dominguez' blast to the base of Tal's Hill that Span basket-caught as he fell down. Cost the Astros 2 runs.

I commented to my wife about how it's gotten a bit ridiculous, how much they're going overboard on the SABR stuff, and she said "Well, they probably feel like... there's not a whole lot else to talk about." Good point.

Tell the Nats to quit taking so many balls. Why, some of them were even within a foot of the strike zone.

He's certainly rough around the edges.

They said the Astros haven't scored in the ninth all year.  That's brutal.

Bottom of the 9th...Carter with a weak grounder to SS
Presley with a weak strikeout.  Down to their last out.

I think Springer is way better than he has shown, but the near future should be interesting to see if he can just relax and play.

Yep, you can tell he's jumpy. Hopefully he gets settled and turns it around soon.

A couple of walks put the tying run in scoring position, but Altuve flies out to end it.  Astros take it in the shorts, 4-3.

This has to be it for Fields in the ninth inning in save situations for a while?

That is an excellent question.

Porter doesn't have a lot to choose from, but damn, once in a while, I'd like it if he let a late-inning reliever go two, or god forbid, three innings.  With an assortment of pitchers, some of which only work 50% of the time, why keep rolling the dice with a new arm?  Just take your chances with the arm who is somewhat on and let them go 2 or 3 and rest them a day or two after that.  Following the current paradigm of setup-setup-closer hasn't worked for them and since they are so willing to be rebels in other aspects, why not try it in this area?  Qualls was fucking on last night; let him go two.

You're absolutely right. I far prefer the "fireman" concept of days of yore to the modern "closer." Sparky Lyle and Goose Gossage usually pitched more than one frame to get a save.

Circus catch and throw by Frendsen keeps Fowler from scoring.

The same guy, earlier in the inning, misplayed one off the Crawford Boxes wall and it rolled past him towards the infield.  He was likely having visions of that right before he stuck his glove behind him and realized he was one lucky SOB.

I haven't seen that angle of Harper's crash before.  Him and Pence are peas in a pod.
