I actually felt pity for him, because the employees were duped like everyone else.
He was one of the analysts responsible for the financial models that Enron used. I used to refer to that as him being in the engine room of the disaster - which is why he got upset, but that doesn't make it wrong. He never challenged how I described what he did, he just asked me to stop saying it. Clearly, I didn't listen.
I used to do work for Enron - procuring insurance for their independent power project constructions - all of which were 100% non-recourse financed which meant that they were set free to live (or die) on their own once Enron had set up the deal. I have little sympathy for most of the people who worked there. Middle management and above knew it was all bullshit, and were working to get their bonus money out asaFp. They were all so stressed about it - long before the death spiral - that threatening physical violence during a meeting was not uncommon. They routinely made - knowingly - ludicrous decisions that were purely to expedite their payday and that would be harmful to the project immediately afterwards. The projects were doomed anyway, because they were based on financial models (see above) that were more puffed up than Chris Christie on all you can eat bean and cheese burrito night.
They all bitch and bleat about the money they lost. But it was money they never had nor earned. Yes, the stock price dropped from $90/share to nothing. But they could have sold at 89, 88, 87, 86... It was only frozen in the 401k between (IIRC) $18 and $14 - they all had plenty of time and more than enough warning to get out long before the lock down. They simply refused to believe that their "everyone's a winner" lottery was over.
HD knew what was happening all along, which is why he was always railing against the bastions of Houston industry in here. It is also why he asked Ken Lay, publicly, if he was on crack. He was fired when they figured out that a long-term stalker of Enron in the Yahoo stock chat rooms turned out to be one of their in-house guys. That's how he was outed here, when that story broke in the national news and we recognized his very unique style of discourse.
