Disneyland Angels vs Houston Astros, 4/6/14
« on: April 06, 2014, 02:36:23 pm »
2-run homer by Castro, plus solo shots by Dominguez and Guzman have put the Good Guys in front of Mickey's Boys by a 4-0 count in the top of the fifth.
I'm in love with rock and roll and I'll be out all night.

Milo's in the booth, recounting his busy week and then he gets to how 'electric' yesterday was, with Berkman and Oswalt visiting. He muses about having to do a rememberance piece on them someday, which is followed by a kind of "uh, yeah" silence before Sparks and Ford jump in to agree that he'll be working one up sometime.

Guzman dribbles one back to the mound, and Weaver flings it past Pujols and it skitters down the line. Guzman at second, two down, and that's all for Weaver today.

Anyone out there?

I'm checking in occasionally. I'm watching MLB Network, and they *finally* deigned to show 30 seconds of Astros coverage. But we've been getting plenty of AL East coverage.

Looks like Bass is struggling in his second shift with the mop, giving up a single to Pujols, a double to Hamilton, and a two-run single to Ibanez. It's 7-3 with one out in the top of the ninth.

Good work, R!!! I share your love of early season optimism! I'm not so sure that I share your feelings about Villar though. In my opinion, he's got some growing up to do. I believe that Villar allows his machismo to interfere with his game to his detriment and that of the team, and I'm not sure that you can grow out of that. I see him as pretty immature, although I could be dead wrong about that and probably am.

I don't know what machismo means in this context, but the guy is still young and though his progress has been in fits and starts, he has improved over time.  It wouldn't surprise me if he has actually progressed again from last year and the improvement we are seeing is not an illusion.  Who knows, he might have more in store and end up a better than average SS.  It's certainly possible with his natural talent.

Yeah, I see him as having some growing/maturing to do, absolutely. He also just has to reign in his energy a bit, or harness it in the right ways... you know, a lot of the stuff that really young, athletic players have to overcome. From what Brownie and Ashby have been saying, it sounds like he realizes that he needs to improve in those areas. And it looks like he might be starting to.

You're probably right. I think that R better described what I meant by using the word machismo. It's an energy and slight overconfidence, almost cockiness, that I really meant. It's perfectly okay and in fact desirable to have confidence in your own abilities. However, you can cross the line and not respect the game. I've seen situations where Villar has crossed that line. Those situations are exactly where he makes a mistake on the basepaths or on a routine play. He should grow out of that. It's all about humility.
