LHP Luis Cruz, RHP David Martinez, OF Domingo Santana and C Max Stassi. A bit surprising that Stassi got sent down so early.

Stassi was going to get sent down once a certain number of pitchers did.  I guess they reached that magic number.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

A bit surprised to see Lo cut so early... Crain won't be healthy until late April at least, so I'd guess the likely guys are:

Qualls
Albers
Chapman
Fields
Zeid or Bass
Valdes or Downs

with the 7th being a long/swing type, Harrell/Keuchel/Williams?

What's the deal with Alex White, I thought he was healthy?

Who are you giving the rotation spot to? I think Keuchel has nailed his down this spring.

White has been throwing but I don't think he's been in a game yet...could be wrong but I'm sure he'll start out a little later in the minors.

Keuchel has had great results this spring, for sure, but that won't be all they go on... I'm guessing they start the year with

Feldman
Cosart
Oberholtzer
Peacock
Williams

Not that Williams excites me at all but I don't see why they signed him unless they felt they needed another starter. The other 3 young guys all have considerably more upside than Keuchel, and showed a lot more last season. I do root for Keuchel, though.

I wonder how many of these guys are still in the rotation by late 2015. I'm guessing either Cosart and/or Peacock get moved to late relief by then; Feldman presumably is safe unless he really tails off, but everyone else is at serious risk of being pushed out by some combo of Appel/Rodon/Folty/Wojo over the next 4-16 months.

And Velazquez and McCullers not far behind.  Honestly, the only real thing I want to get out of this season is a television contract.

No surprises among this morning's cuts (per tweets):

Springer, Foltynewicz, Singleton, DeShields, Correa and Appel.

(BTW, Correa's hand is NOT broken.)

Pitcture is becoming even clearer, as Downs is optioned and Amador and Petit are reassigned to minor-league camp. Also, a farewell to JD Martinez, who has been released by the club. If Carter is primarily the DH, 1B is now down to Krauss and Guzman, though they bringing in someone from the outside still is a possibility.

I can't imagine the astros going with Guzman on the OD roster.  They have to be looking outside.

Why, because he's got a shitty average this spring? That describes almost the entire team.

In part, but it's more the combination of his performance the last few year and the spring.  Not only is it his overall performance, but also when you look at splits.  I jus think there have got to be better options.

His splits are exactly why I think they'll keep him. For his career, he's done poorly vs. RHP, and at home - home having been the worst park for hitters in the majors, Petco.

But away from Petco, he's hit .272/.331/.453 (only Castro slugged better than .453 last year for the Astros) with a HR every 30 at-bats, and against LHP, he's hit .286/.358/.460.

So they're figuring he might do well in a platoon with Krauss, playing at MMP.

Are there better options available? Maybe, maybe not, but I don't think he's as poor of an option as you think, and particularly if all you're really looking for is a place-holder for Singleton.

Serious question:  Where do card-carrying, hard-core sabermetricians (like the Astros front office) fall on the question of how much value to assign to spring training numbers when crafting an opening day roster?

Good for him. Hope it goes well.
Ditto. I loved his meteoric rise-through-the-minors success story for such a low draft pick. Just to have played as much as he already has in the majors is an accomplishment considering his own drafting org considered him merely roster-filler. It would be great if he could carve out some kind of MLB career.

I don't recall reading anything about pitching ST numbers correlating to full season numbers at all.  However, there is a small correlation between ST slugging percentage and overall improved regular performance.

That portends good things for Krauss, Grossman, Castro, Marwin, and.....that's it.

I'm disappointed in this.  Not so much the decision to let him go, but that he didn't stay healthy.  I feel like he would have been a good asset in the pen.

5-10/190 vs 6-0/190
Both guys can play center but not particularly well, doubles power, good on-base percentages in the minors, good speed but probably couldn't steal 25 in the majors.

Both traded to a shitty AL team for an established vet.

Of course, Hoes could turn into Luis Gonzalez for all I know.

A bit surprised by this...maybe they see him as a tradable asset given the final roster tweaks that are going on?
