Different 1b.

@EvanDrellich: Astros are proceeding as if Japhet Amador will not be here during spring training, Jeff Luhnow said

Hope the Big guy gets everything sorted out, whatever is going on, doesn't sound good though.

Meanwhile, first baseman Japhet Amador won’t report to camp on Wednesday or any time soon, Luhnow said. Amador is in Mexico with what would only call a family emergency.

“He’s not going to be here, and we don’t know what the next steps are with him,” Luhnow said. “For now, he needs to spend some time with his family, so he won’t be showing up here today. Other than that, we expect everybody else to be here.”

There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Singleton expected in tomorrow. No one, at least publicly, seems to be upset with him since reporting day is tomorrow I believe. Still, all the others have been there for 2-3 days voluntarily. Doesn't say much for his dedication or maturity.

Doesn't say much for his dedication or maturity.

But it does say some can judge him for not getting there early without know why he didn't go early.

Has anybody heard from Singleton yet? I hope he didn't have a wreck or make a wrong turn, maybe he ran out of gas.

So where's Singleton?

He apparently has a strong marijuana habit, discussed in the Philly and OKC papers recently.

It's so easy to have a serious dependence upon marijuana. People tell you that it isn't addictive and isn't a problem. When I went to rehab, people laughed at me. Then you wreck your life as I did. All of the evidence in my life-tax problems, loss of desire to work, suspension from the bar, were all related to drug use and actually caused by that insatiable desire for more.  It can be a daily struggle. Thankfully, for me, I now hate drugs for what they did to my life, my career and my family. While I'd never say never again, I do say "not today" and have repeated that statement everyday now for years.

Seems like he was doing fine with the weed (other than the negative test results) but the alcohol really derailed his playing ability.

*Obviously if a requirement for your job is not to smoke pot, and you still smoke pot even after being caught and then again despite the fact that you know you will be tested again, you have a problem with it.

If you're told "You can live out your boyhood dream and retire exceptionally wealthy before you're 40, but...you can't smoke weed."  And you still can't stop smoking weed, you have a problem with weed.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

I think it's clearer that he has a problem not dealing with sober life. He gave up the weed for a year, he just substituted booze for it.

That's always the challenge, which is why you have to quit all mind-altering substances. I may have just substituted Diet Coke, but, unlike drugs, including alcohol, so far my Diet Coke consumption hasn't cost me anything but money.

Fair point.  Regardless, I hope that club gives him more support than just lip service.

They've got too much sunk in him to give up easily. If he was Joe Shlabotnik, he might've been gone yesterday.

In fairness, Schaefer got another year in Houston after his police issues before being jettisoned.
