Game Over, Season Over
« on: September 29, 2013, 05:29:00 pm »
Astros set the all-time MLB strikeout record after K-ing 19 times today.  They finish the season with 1535, 6 Ks ahead of the 2010 Dbacks MLB record, and 148 Ks ahead of the all-time AL record.

They also end the season on a 15 game losing streak, the longest such streak since the 1899 Cleveland Spiders.  The Spiders folded at the end of the 1899 season, a season in which they went 20-132.  That ranks as the the worst record in MLB history.

There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

It couldn't end soon enough.  I've loved baseball all my life.  I still play plenty of denial league ball....but this is the first year that I lost interest in the major league club.  If Crane and Lunhow don't care about winning at that level, why should I care about following them.  To be clear, it's not that they weren't winning, it's that ownership didn't really seem to care if they did.  They focused on the minors and so did I.  It's the only thing that got me through as a fan this year.  That said, I fear the same thing will happen next year.

+1 But I followed the big league club far more than the minor league affiliate teams. Your point is valid. They've got to address the inadequacy at the big league club during this off-season, or the fan base is going to erode to the depths not ever experienced in Houston.

Thank goodness we have Texans football to fill the void.

Worse.  They broke the MLB record, while using a DH.

No doubt about that.  I just didn't know that the team obliterated the AL record.

I'll believe it when I see it. I need visible signs.

By himself, how many wins is George Springer worth? Singleton didn't exactly light up AAA, so Springer is the only quality addtion at this point. Another consecutive100-loss season ties the 62-65 Mets.

AL record was lower - most likely due to not having a pitcher bat.  They broke the NL/MLB record with their 14th K on the last day.

Probably like 5. There is a big weakness at the LF/1B/DH. They could could add one free agent and Springer and be 7-9 games better. Improvement in the bullpen would be another 5 games. That keeps you from a 100-loss season.

Disagree on LF.  I thought Grossman made significant strides before being injured.  I expect him in LF, Springer in CF, and Hoes in RF to start the season.

I like Grossman, too, but in my mind had him as a CF'er. You are probably right.

My thoughts exactly.  I want to see Grossman a shot at a more everyday role.  My question with Hoes is arm-related.  I like his bat, and think he'll get better, but does he have the kind of arm you want in RF?  That's the main reason I'm intrigued with the thought of Francouer (sp) as a FA signing.  He didn't hit for crap this year, but he' shown he can.

Hoes and Grossman strike me as very similar players - in the lineup at the same time you get very little power from two corner OF positions.

Agreed.  If they're going to gamble on a short-term free agent, a run producing corner OF would be valuable.

Martinez. Since they are going nowhere next year, stick him in LF/DH and give him 550 PAs and see what he can do. I think that he has a chance to be a top run producer

Wasn't that the plan this year?
