Carter and K's

Anyone else notice that Carter is sitting on 199 Ks for the season?

Mark Reynolds holds the MLB record for SO with 223.  Carter ought to make that standing up.

He'll take a swing at it, but he'll miss.

Sometimes he might just look at it.

There's no way he'll break the record. With just 12 games left, he'd need to average 2 K's per game. Obviously, he's capable of that, but if he got close I think they would hold him out of the lineup enough to make certain he didn't break it. Kid's had a decent first full season, and I'm sure they wouldn't want to overshadow that by watching him break the single-season strikeout record.

"Decent" by what measure?  Home runs?  If you measure by "making contact", he's been abysmal.

No kidding? He's not good at making contact?

I suppose it depends on how you measure it.  If you measure it by actually counting the number of times he doesn't, then no, he's not very good at it.  However, I'm sure there's a metric that purports to demonstrate that the's very good at it.

How about one that says he's less bad at it?

So taking into account how many batters strike out year to year it turns out that Carter's not as bad as Vince DiMaggio in 1938. That certainly is a comfort.

Say, I just saw Carter whiff on an imperfectly thrown yet perfectly catchable ball that cost the Astros a run. I wonder how you can measure sucking through the years in order to put Carter's defense into better perspective.

I was in Milwaukee at Miller at the end of 2002 when Jose Hernandez was somewhere around 186 SO w/ the record at something like 192.  The fans--what fans there were--were cheering for him to strikeout.  It was ugly, and I wouldn't wish that on anyone.  I hope they do pull Carter before he gets close, if it looks like he will get close.

That said, his strikeout rate has been astonishing.

Fuck Carter. He put himself in this position with his feast-or-famine approach. I have no sympathy for him.

Nope. But if he sets the record, so be it.
