Tanner Bushue has retired

Astros County LINK

In the end, my dissolution with the game of baseball will not be a result of any loss of love for the game, rather from the realization that I can no longer bear the anger its supposed stewards cause to be built up in my soul. -Lee (01/08/2013)

Mier ahead of Trout. Ouch.
I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed

But the future has to change - and to change I've got to destroy

I applaud his decision and wish him great success in whatever he does.
So, Keuchel and J.D. Martinez are the salvagable parts of that draft.

Jonathan Meyer may turn out to be a decent utility player.

Even I'm surprised that Mier was so bad at the plate he finished the season sub-.200.

I still hold out a long shot for Kiki as a utility player also.

Late first rounders bust all the time.  The only thing that makes the former club personnel look like morons with the benefit of hindsight was saying inane shit like they thought they got the best player in the first round, mier was top of the board, etc

Meyer and Hernandez both have major league gloves from what I saw.

Heard Castro interview in which he said Meyer was his "off the radar guy" at cc that would have an impact on MLB level and praised his defense as some of the best he has seen.

It has been interesting to watch Meyer's progress on defense ... he was pretty stone-fingered at third in his first year or two, but has really put in the work.

That was the year that they had a predraft deal with Shelby Miller before Luhnow grabbed him 2 spots before our pick, according to Callis.  Saying Mier was the best player was hyperbole.

A whole lotta teams can say that.

Oh, absolutely. I wasn't pointing it out to make the case that the Astros' front office were idiots, just to point out how uncertain the whole selection process is.

ETA: It would be nice to have one of those "once in a lifetime" selections break our way. Perhaps Correa is that guy.

I believe a Mr. Roy Oswalt was pretty good for a 23rd rounder.

Different set of rules then.  He was a DFE (Draft, follow, evaluate) player.  They had a year to watch him in Junior College before they had to sign him.  That rule was changed a few years ago.  That is why you will see a big name with a late draft pick.

So we attended what was evidently the last start of Bushue's career, last Friday. He came out with a 2-0 lead after walking the first batter in the 3rd inning, and I wondered what was up. Must've hurt his arm pretty bad and decided enough was enough, because it seemed like this was a nice bounce-back year for him - the 5.14 ERA looks bad, but a 1.08 WHIP and 40/13 K/BB ratio in 49 innings are very good. ERA was probably inflated some by the 7 HR and just bad luck.

Something seems... different about you.  Yet familiar.

Dang, had to think about that one for a few before it finally clicked...
