Quiz Hard
« on: July 16, 2013, 10:02:03 am »
...not.

Here's a silly time-waster: 20 questions about the Die Hard franchise.  I scored 19 out of 20, and it turns out that I'd fat-fingered the one I missed.

19/20, missed the daughter's name.  And there were entirely too many questions about 4.0, which is the Crystal Skull of the franchise.

I thought they might hit on DH2 more, which is the Phantom Menace of the franchise (awful and totally dispensable), to catch people out.

FWIW, the only really notable/memorable thing about AGDTDH was this.

16 out of 20 and I never saw Die Hard 2 or Die Hard With A Vengeance.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

I never saw any of them until the first one was on tv last year and for some reason I sat there and watched it. I thought it was a pretty middle of the pack 80s flick. I don't get the attraction.

Vengeance is fun - if for no other reason than you'll enjoy trying to figure out the missed step in the water jug puzzle.  Don't bother with 2 - it's a remake of 1 without the charm.

Outside of John Cusak movies the teen angst genre, this is perhaps the 80's movie...IMHO.

There is a weird split in movies about 1985 or so.

Pre-1985 action movies : Empire Strikes Back, Star Trek II, Back to the Future, Raiders of the Lost Ark
Post-1985 action movies : Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Predator

Empire and Raiders are THE perfect adventure movies.

And I have no idea why you're calling BTTF an action movie.

Because it had a DeLorean that reached 88 mph.

FWIW, in the UK, getting a car up to 88mph was deemed a laughably slow threshold.

Sometime during the 80s, I got my 1974 Triumph Spitfire up to 105mph.  Well, I think I did.  My eyeballs were rattling so much in their sockets it was hard to read the speedo.

The top speed of a US DeLorean was 86.  It only had 130 horsepower under all that stainless steel.  It did 0-60 in a blistering 10+ seconds.

I'd just point out that Bull Durham was the best movie made in the 80s, other than Henry V and Ran.

Die Hard redefined the action genre.

Really? What the FUCK? Even leaving out what has been mentioned before:

Action Movies - Full Metal Jacket, Blade Runner, The Terminator, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Platoon, Escape from New York, hell - even Highlander and They Live are better movies. I don't see how Die Hard redefined the genre at all other than selling tickets.

And as for the 80's movie, what about Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Princess Bride, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Fatal Attraction, Do the Right Thing, Color of Money, A Christmas Story...

This is why I'm a poor barometer. There's scads of hugely successful movies that I haven't seen, have walked out on or will never see. I just don't get it.
I'm in love with rock and roll and I'll be out all night.

I never knew that the performance was so shitty.  Also, from Wikipedia, I found out that there's a guy in Humble who owns all the rights to the DeLorean Motor Company, and is making new ones from a combination of original and re-manufactured parts.  No mention of if they go any faster and/or if any have survived their first merge onto 59.

He has an underrated oeuvre.  Hot to Trot and Shakes the Clown were both comedic masterpieces.  And how he didn't get nominated for a best supporting Oscar for his work on the Police Academy series, I'll never know.  Twelve year old me was a big fan.
