Mariano Rivera's last game
« on: July 12, 2013, 01:00:24 pm »
So Mariano Rivera's career comes to an end Sunday September 29th at Minute Maid Park.  It will be for sure his last regular season game (assuming he is healthy).  If the Yanks are out of the playoffs by then, it will serve as the last time he ever suits up.

Drayton got a lot of backlash from fans over their pandering to out of town fans, Sweet Caroline, selling Yankee gear, etc.. I'm curious to what folks think is a appropriate gesture for Mariano's last game.  For arguments sake assume the Yankees are eliminated on Saturday the 28th or earlier.  If the Astros played Enter Sandman as a salute to him when he entered the game for the last time, would folks get upset?  Sold TShirts commemorating his career?

BTW, dynamic pricing is in full effect for this game already, and it looks like a bunch of tickets have already been sold for it.

I wouldn't have an issue with playing Enter Sandman for the (seemingly) sure-fire future HOF'er in the last inning of the last game of the regular season / the last regular season game of his career.  I see that more as a simple gesture honoring one of the truly greats rather than pandering to the opposing teams crowd (see, e.g. Sweet Caroline).
In the end, my dissolution with the game of baseball will not be a result of any loss of love for the game, rather from the realization that I can no longer bear the anger its supposed stewards cause to be built up in my soul. -Lee (01/08/2013)

I wouldn't like it.  But then, I don't root for an Astros loss when I go to the games either.

I lean that way too, and MR is not only one of the all time, all-time greats but from all accounts a really good guy.  Not only that, the Atros don't have any History against him.  If this were Pujols last game or Chipper's or Walt Weiss's I would be much more opposed.

Why?  Are Pujols and Chipper not "all-time" greats too?  Now you're basing it on whether or not you perceive them to be a "good guy"?  What about Rivera stealing Enter Sandman from the Astros?  Does that not count for anything?

I like Rivera but I would be opposed to any tribute in-game. Give him a plaque before the game if you want to do something.

Yes, I would be less offended doing something like this for someone 1 perceive as a good guy.  I'd still root for him to blow the save and give up runs.

Exactly.  Pay him tribute before the game, give him a nice ovation when he enters, if it's applicable.  A formal in-game tribute would be disgusting.

I don't think playing a little Metallica as he takes the mound is particularly formal.

Why don't they just order the Astro hitter to strike out then?  Siince when is rooting for the other team appropriate during the game?

The Astros just need to have a 14 run lead in the 9th.  Fuck Rivera.

Perhaps the Astros will be ordered to make sure they're down by 3-runs in the 9th, to ensure Rivera can get a save.

I typically would agree.  However, playing Enter Sandman in the last regular season game of his career before B9 seems more of an act of respect (stadium wide tip of the cap so to speak) to one of the greats (and a decent guy) rather than an 'in game tribute'.   And like Navin said, I'd still be rooting for him to get lit up...

I think they should schedule a Billy Wagner tribute (the guy did recently retire) for the same day, hold it on the field prior to the 9th inning, and play a Wagner montage on the jumbotron set to "Enter Sandman". They could also have a Jeff Bagwell look-alike contest and have James Hetfield declared the winner.

I can only think of one appropriate gesture for all yankees any time any place with the possible exception of those whose career started before 1950.

ETA:  This is also IMO the single small redeeming feature of moving to the AL -- I get to actively root against the Yankees much more often.

He'll get enough of a tribute from all the Yankee fans there, I don't think anything extra needs to be done.

OK, seems to be a consensus now.  We want Billy Wagner signing Enter Sandman when Rivera enters the game.  Followed by a 2 minute moment of silence and a a couple choruses of New York New York.

Listening to Metallica is not.  Firing up the fans to root for the other team is...well...rooting for the other team.  They don't play Enter Sandman for Rivera just because the PA announcer felt like listening to Metallica.  They play it to get the fans to root for Rivera.
