Since we're having so much fun arguing about no-hitter superstitions, let's debate the modern usage of neighborhood labels in Houston.

The debate, in favor of EaDo and Neartown:  http://www.houstoniamag.com/travel-and-outdoors/wanderlust/articles/yes-eado-is-lame-but-youre-wrong-about-everything-else-june-2013

And against these newfangled NYC-esque names: http://keephoustonhouston.wordpress.com/

I always thought the wards sounded cool.

Me too.  Most folks still use Second Ward, Third Ward, Fifth Ward and Sixth Ward.  I don't really hear First Ward or Fourth Ward much.

While out walking the neighborhood one weekend, I noticed some street signs east of Shepherd, north of Westheimer have Vermont Commons on them.  I found that rather cool.

First Ward or maybe it is Fourth Ward is starting a resurgence effort.  If you turn on Sawyer from Washington, you'll see a nice sign designating the neighborhood.

My father lives in Hyde Park, but apparently not in Vermont Commons. Its not clear to me why they would be separate places. In fact, I've never heard him use any of those names, though he might and I just never heard him use it. He usually calls it the West Gray area.

That's the historic Sixth Ward.  The newest and smallest of the wards.

But you definitely hear a lot more about the Fourth Ward than the First Ward.

I hear Hyde Park a lot for that area, but to me it's a sub-section of Montrose, kind of like Westmoreland.  One sad loss of neighborhood identify is Freedman's Town, which is steadily losing its identity if it has any left at all, which is sad given the area's historical and cultural importance.

I swear that sign didn't say Sixth Ward, but it might have.  I was surprised to see the sign regardless.

I never really think of anything south of IH10 as the Heights, yet people keep reference that area as though it is part of Heights.

I think even New Yorkers are getting sick of people trying to foist new versions of these names on them (NoMad probably being the most recent).

I like to make an exception for the sole reason of reminding Heights folks that they have a Wal-mart in their neighborhood.

NoMad?  Madison Ave. goes north/south.  Is that north of Madison Square Park?  North of MSG?

While far from a great, or even good, show, How I Met Your Mother hit the nail on the head with a couple characters buying an apartment in the neighborhood of Dowisetrepla (Downwind of the Sewage Treatment Plant).

Although the restaurant/bar of the same name is awesome.

Was DUMBO where it all went off the rails or well before then?

They've got some 1st Ward signs over near Spring St., north of the railroad tracks, but south of 10.  Old 6th Ward doesn't really start until you're south of Washington.  Lord, I'd love to get a place in the 6th.

I was just looking for this reference.

People in the Heights think that is bullshit.  (Even though I bought in to the whole "Stop the Heights Wal-Mart" campaign, because fuck Wal-Mart.)
