I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

You just had to do that to us, didn't you? It's bad enough that I watched the damn game on television as it happened. I don't need to relive it. However, I tipped my cap to Wood that day. He had pinpoint command of both that big heater and that wicked pre-surgery snake going at the same time. It really was unfair to force a hitter into the box against him that day.

The younger versions of JD and Brownie, with an informative pre-game primer on pitches by JD.  I miss him.  Fuck the cubs.

If you have 6 hours and would like to be in a good mood.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1eS7462aps Astros over Braves in 18 innings.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Kerry Wood's 20-K game is now on YouTube.

Sounds like a good time for a certain YouTube user to receive a DMCA notice.

I remember reading somewhere, that on some statistical model devised to measure such things, this was perhaps the most dominant pitching performance in MLB history. I saw this game on TV and it reminded me of Doc Gooden's Astros' debut which was similarly memorable.

I just looked through their list of games.  The only games involving Astros wins were the 18-inning NLDS game and a couple of meaningless blowout interleague wins against the Mariners that were marketed to Ichiro fans as "The Mariners lost, BUT Ichiro went 4-for-4...".  The losses are all mostly unspectacular games cherry-picked from the playoffs, including 2004 NLCS Games 6-7 and 2005 NLCS Game 1.  No mention of 2004 NLCS Game 5 or 2005 NLCS Games 4 or 6.

I blame Selig.  FYB.

MLB has now partnered with YouTube to create an MLB Classics channel.

I remember Gooden's game too, but I saw some starts from J.R. Richard and from Nolan Ryan that have to be way up on that list. Wood's slider before his TJ surgery was devastating. Then he had the 96-100 MPH cheese.

I see that now, but I was too disgusted to click the link before I made my first post.

Mike Scott's clinching no hitter in 1986 is my all-time favorite game.

It also rates right up there with the others mentioned in terms of dominance.  The Giants were completely hapless.

The funny thing is that we couldn't do much against Giants' pitching either. He almost had to throw a no hitter to win the damn game.

The finest game/win ever by a Houston Astros team (IMHO)? Game 6 in St. Louis in the 2005 NLCS. So many angles played out in that game, but the greatest one of them all was the Astros finally going to the World Series in my lifetime. I screamed out to my Dad in heaven and said "They did it Dad! They did it!"

I was in the Dome that day. Thirty minutes after the game ended people were still in their seats cheering as the players came out of the clubhouse and waved at the stands. That was actually the third consecutive game I made while on a business trip to H-town. The first of the three was the Deshaies game where he struck out the first eight (?) in a  row, the second was a Ryan gem, either a one or two hitter against the Dodgers.

Didn't the Astros throw a 2-hitter, a 1-hitter, and a no-hitter in that series?
In the end, my dissolution with the game of baseball will not be a result of any loss of love for the game, rather from the realization that I can no longer bear the anger its supposed stewards cause to be built up in my soul. -Lee (01/08/2013)

I remember all three of those games, and I think that you are right, but I'm too lazy to check baseball-reference.com for confirmation. I saw the Old Man throw a one hitter with the Rangers that should have been a perfect game. The lone hit was a ball that Palmeiro so badly misplayed at 1B that it was scored a hit. Ryan struck out like 16 and didn't issue a walk, and the Rangers made no errors. That probably was the most dominating big league performance that I ever saw in person.

I looked it up.  Deshaies 2-hit the Dodgers on 9/23, Ryan 2-hit the Giants on 9/24, and then Scott no-hit the Giants on 9/25.

Okay, you shamed me into getting off of my lazy ass and checking the boxes too. We won the other two games 4-0 and 6-0. That was a very impressive three game starting pitching set.
