Gammons: "[Teams that] have payrolls under $40M should 1.not get revenue-sharing and 2. be out of the protected pick business. Rewarding trying to lose is wrong."

I would love to see a salary floor AND a salary cap.  Of course, that would probably cost a season (as the NHL learned).

I don't see what the Astros are doing as a Marlins fire sale.  I see this is as a once in a generation tear-it-down-and-build-it-up effort.

If the Astros are "trying to lose" two year from now then they deserve what they get and the fans will write them off.  I'm confident the team will be competitive (or at least well on the way) by then.

I see this as Gammons complaining on behalf of some AL East GM who's cranky because they don't have a creampuff to beat up on this year, and the West does.  The Astros won't win 90 games in 2014/2015, but they'll be respectable enough to steal some games from the contenders.

Agreed.  He's whining that it's not fair that the Red Sox and Yankees will have even less of a chance to make the playoffs given those teams' already low expectations.

I'd like to quote that esteemed scholar and historian, Ty in Tampa, who put it so succinctly.

I'm sure Whitey was just as up in arms about the integrity of the game when the Rays were terrible.  What?  Oh.

I bet some astute librarian-type could pull up the column that Whitey wrote about how unfair it is that big-market, high-revenue teams can afford all the top free agents while the mid and small markets are left to pick up scraps.

Every year there is a worst team in baseball.  Whitey needs to hang it up.

I can't wait for this season.  I'm going to root like hell that this team is not the worst in baseball only because it will discredit all of the ridiculous bitching going on about the Astros drastic rebuild.

We all have our reasons for wanting the team to win. And until they are mathematically eliminated, I'm going to root like hell that they win it all!
