Astros Bright Future

says McTaggart. Actually, some headline writer I suppose. http://houston.astros.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130306&content_id=42347892&vkey=news_hou&c_id=hou

Contrast that with this statement from the column written by Kevin Sherrington in today's Dallas Morning News referring to the Nolan Ryan conundrum:

If he exits the Rangers, where could he get just such as opportunity? Houston? Until they dig themselves out from underneath
the rubble, the Astros may be the worst organization in baseball. They're joining baseball's toughest division, where they'll have
a hard time being competitive, much less making World Series runs. Playing the Rangers 19 times a year would be painful for
Ryan to watch. He's 66. I'm no doctor, but I'm not sure any of us will live long enough to see the Astros back in a World Series.

Hmmm.

It's comical to watch these knights of the keyboard jizzing themselves in the belief of The Great Savior Nolan Ryan. He didn't build that team. He's a great figurehead for a team, but it wasn't his skullduggery that put the pieces together.

He does have a pretty magical Midas touch though, I'll give him that.

Bingo. Daniels built that club.

Overall, the idea that Daniels built the club is solid. However (there is always a however, isn't there?)... from my understanding, getting an AL team to listen to the very idea that you build a competitive club around pitching and defense is very hard to do. Previous to such dignitaries as Ryan beating that drum, Texas was no different than most AL clubs. "We need more hitting". It's almost similar to hearing the same mantra coming out of Colorado every year. Pitching is fungible... a necessary evil if you will... nevermind talking about defense per se.

So maybe Ryan didn't really do much other than to be yet another voice of reason that you don't give up on pitching and defense to win in the AL. Daniels, for his part, listened and didn't fall into the trap of "I'll get more hitting!". Remember, they traded a good young pitcher for Josh Hamilton, so there is that. And, lastly... what did in the Rangers in the two tries to win a World Championship... most especially against the St. Louis Cardinals? Pitching and defense. St. Louis was just a tad better at that than the Rangers. The hitting the Cardinals did was just good enough to beat the Rangers too, who decided slugging their way to a championship was going to do the trick.

It's not even the Ryan deal that is so irritating here. It's the notion that a team that is down now won't be good for a long time. Couldn't this have been said about Rangers 5-6 years ago? I bet these clowns couldn't tell us without looking who the Astros GM is, what his background or philosophies are or  how their minor league system ranks. Much less how much money is commited to shitty contracts (A-Rod as Ranger anyone)?

Seriously, with Hugo Chavez dead, does that open up the Venezuelan baseball academies again?

I love how this gets tossed out into the media-verse like we folks who follow the Astros have never heard it before. You know, for the past couple of years straight, and all. Oy.
