I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed
Up and down the M1 in some luminous yo-yo toy
But the future has to change - and to change I've got to destroy
Oh look out Lennon here I come - land ahoy-hoy-hoy

Off to that great tomato garden in the sky. RIP.

Also, he was aboard an Orioles Fantasy Cruise when he died?

Yup. That must have been a bit weird.

I'll bet he went out with a Winston blazing. Was he the best all time umpire baiter?

Everyone's talking, few of them know
The rest are pretending, they put on a show
And if there's a message I guess this is it
Truth isn't easy, the easy part's shit

Always loved this one

Best manager I ever actually saw manage. Close runner-up was Dick Williams.

my favorite quote attributed to Weaver "If you are going up there to hit into a double play, just strike out."
Always ready to go to a game.

Earl Weaver was one of the top three or four managers of a ball game in big league history. He was the best that I ever saw. RIP

With all due respect---from what I recall, he wouldn't want them.

I was reading around today and saw an anecdote that had a religiously inclined player approach Earl before a game and ask the manager if he would like to participate in that day's team prayer service, assuring that it is uplifting to walk with the Lord. "Son, I'd rather have you walk with the fucking bases loaded."

Actually, the story involved outfielder Pat Kelly, who was going into the ministry and so informed Earl with the phrase "I'm going to walk with the Lord." Earl retorted, "I'd rather you walk with the bases loaded." There's another funny story involving Kelly. Once while his club was on the road, Kelly came up to bat and was announced as the hitter, and the organist, without looking at Kelly, began playing a few notes of "When Irish Eyes are Smiling." The problem was that Kelly was African-American.

From an athletic family. His brother was Leroy Kelly.

Pretty good running back.

BTW, as an aside from the anecdotes, Pat Kelly was an excellent (platoon) lead-off hitter for several seasons, with the White Sox and then Orioles.

Pat Kelly preceded his old manager in death, in 2005.

Weaver was an enthusiastic proponent of the little-known doctrine involving the separation of church and dugout.

And also a proponent of the slightly better known doctrine of separating bunt from baseball strategy.

I should have typed "little known but oft employed".
