They will be picking shorty.  Supposedly a lot more depth in this years than the past few.

Nate Freiman is the second selection

Position: 1B
Age: 25,
DOB: 12/31/1986
Bats: R,
Throws: R
Height: 6' 7",
Weight: 225
Drafted: 2008, 8th (234) - SD

The big, strong first baseman taken out of Duke in the eighth round of the 2009 Draft has shown an ability to hit for power and drive in runs. Over the past two seasons, Freiman has hit 46 homers and 66 doubles while driving in 216 runs. He led the Double-A Texas League with 105 RBIs in 2012 while striking out fewer than 100 times for the second consecutive season. He followed that up with two two-homer games playing for Team Israel in the World Baseball Classic qualifying round before heading to the Arizona Fall League. Limited to first base, Freiman could be seen as a right-handed power bat off the bench should he be taken.

Sounds like this guy is taking Berkman's roster spot

Our old friend Angel Sanchez, who signed with the Angels earlier this offseason, got popped by the White Sox.

Fall back DH plan maybe or maybe Wallace is on the trading block.

Singleton isn't ready anyway.

Interesting tidbit:

Quote
Brian McTaggart ‏@brianmctaggart
Astros would have passed with Freiman pick if he wasn't available.

I would assume this means that Freiman isn't just a well we have an open spot on the 40-man guy.

They had just 3 open spots.  Now 1

20 pitchers
2 catchers
10 infielders
7 outfielders

I saw Freiman here in Tulsa in the TL ASG last season.  He's definitely a big guy and won the HR derby with some impressive shots along the way. He hit one off the scoreboard.  I don't recall him doing anything particularly noteworthy during the game or later in the year when SA came back through.  Then again, I wasn't paying quite the same level of attention as I would to the CC guys.

Here's one man's opinions and evaluations. http://www.crawfishboxes.com/2012/12/6/3735690/rule-5-draft-profiles-fields-freiman-burgess-and-lamb

I'm pretty excited about Fields and the first baseman makes surprising contact for a power guy.

Sounds like Fields has closer stuff.  I guess having him in the fold (and on the top of the Rule 5 board) may have contributed to the Lopez trade.

Now this is ridiculous. http://houston.astros.mlb.com/mlb/minorleagues/affiliates/index.jsp?c_id=hou

27 year old Fields and 25 year old Freiman are now 18th and 20th respectively on the Stros top 20 prospects.

Think of where they would have been a couple of years ago (9-10ish?).  In the process, they bumped off 24-year old Paul Clemens (25 before season starts) and Brett Oberholtzer.  I don't know, it doesn't bother me too much because of their potential.

Fields can't supplant Rasmussen on this list? That's either discouraging or total BS.
Oberholtzer and Clemens bumped off the Top 25....thanks, Ed. I loved your Pence deal but you laid an egg here. Your parting shot?
