Rule 5 Guys
« on: September 10, 2012, 12:30:13 pm »
Farmstros always does a nice job of breaking down who could be lost to the rule 5 draft if not protected.  Here is this year's list - If you were in charge, what three players would you protect from this list?

My three to protect -
1. J. Villar
2. B. Oberholtzer
3. J. Cisnero

Remember, other guys can be protected from the minor league section by being on the AAA or AA rosters

I'm curious as to who will be removed from the 40-man.  Right now they are at 40+ 2 on the 60 day DL.

I think this will also give us a look at how Luhnow views some of Wade's prospects versus some of his pickups as well as I think several younger players on the 40-man will get outrighted.

There are a number of guys at AA and AAA who I can see getting picked if not protected: Cisnero, Cosart, Grossman, Krauss, Lo, Oberholtzer, Seaton, Stoffel, Villar.

Goin' for a bus ride.

I don't understand these rules at all, but out of the Farmstros list, I'd protect Cosart, Villar and Seaton.  I haven't seen most of those lower level guys, but I'm assuming none of them could hang on a 25 man roster for a year.

As to the 40 man, you could pick off about half of the 40 man without losing anything of value, IMO.

I think you gotta protect Cosart and Villar. After that there are several that I'd like to protect. Grossman, Oberholtzer, Cisnero, Seaton, Perez (catcher).

Looking at the list, there's at least 10 roster filler type guys they could/should release.
You may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"

There are three different levels of the rule IV (5) five draft.

1. Major league portion: Can select any player who is not on 40 man roster and must be kept on active 25 man roster for full season.  Each pick cost $50K and if returned you get back $25K.  Some teams work out trades as well. You must have room on your 40 man roster to make the pick.
2. AAA portion: Can pick any player not protected on AAA reserve list (usually not made public that I can find) or higher.  Cost of the pick is 12K
3. AA portion: Can pick any player not protected on the AA reserve list or higher.  Cost of pick is 4K

Last season we got Rhiner Cruz and Marwin Gonzalez out of the rule 5 draft. We have two other bullpen arms we have gotten from Rule 5 drafts past. An. Rodriguez and Wesley Wright. Here is a wikilist of rule 5 picks.

I'd hope HOU would find a way to protect the following:

1. Cozart
2. Seaton
3. J. Cisnero
4. J. Villar
5. Krauss
6. Oberholtzer

Since C. Perez, and L. Cruz haven't appeared above High A yet, I don't think they need to be protected on the 40 man, However, I would protect them by putting them on the AAA reserve list.

The Astros appear to have mostly agreed with you. They protected 7: Cisnero, Cosart, Grossman, Lo, Oberholtzer, Seaton, Villar.

"The moves leave the Astros with 36 players on the 40-man roster, giving them some open spots for free agents as well as the Rule 5 Draft, which will be held on Dec. 6 at the conclusion of the Winter Meetings in Nashville, Tenn. Houston will have the first pick. "

Edit: Apparently McTaggart believes Mickey Storey is a lefty, despite the often-telling fact that he pitches with his right hand.
