Instructional League Rosters
« on: August 29, 2012, 08:33:08 am »
One of the players told me today that only four players from Greeneville will be going to instructionals:

Rio Ruiz
Lance McCullers
Carlos Correa
Terrell Joyce

I found it interesting Houser, Toney, and Ovando were not on that list.
Always ready to go to a game.

Maybe those guys are going to the AFL.

Highly unlikely.

It's possible they'll be added to instructs later.

The three excluded are all older than the ones included.

I would think they are too inexperienced for the AFL.

Speaking of the AFL, the club's reps have been announced:

Cosart, Lo, Sogard, Mier (Taxi Squad), Singleton, Borchering, and Springer

More guys worth keeping an eye on this year.  I'm still pulling for Lo to stay healthy; seeing him sent to the AFL to get more innings is a good sign that the new regime hasn't given up on yet.

Me too, ditto for Mier - not that anyone would give up on him yet, especially someone who seems to love former 1st-round picks as much as Luhnow.

According to BA's roster, Mier is on the taxi squad and there is a Houston pitcher TBA.

Who is Sogard?

26th-rounder in '10 out of NC State.  LH reliever who's moving up the system, but is already 25.

Wow. Doesn't exactly look like a LH specialist. Lefties have hit .342 off him in CC, righties .254. He's done a nice job keeping the ball in the park though, only 2 HR in 65 total IP.

Sogard has mostly been used in relief (though not as a lefty specialist).  Most of his appearances are for multiple innings.  He has always been near 1K/IP until this year in Corpus where he registered only about 2K/3IP.  He also had some control problems this year (4.5BB/9IP at both Lancaster and Corpus) ... about twice the walk rate he experienced at lower levels.

He did get three spot starts in 2010 with Tri-City and spent June & July in the Lexington rotation in 2011.  That did not work out too well for him as he was 0-3 with a 5.40 ERA as a starter.  He ended up posting a combined record of 3-4 with 4 saves, a 4.34 ERA and also led Lexington with 112 K (in 104 total IP).  This year has been exclusively a bullpen experience.

I have not seen a scouting report recently, but I seem to recall that he has a plus fastball and not much in the way of secondary pitches.  It is interesting to me that he was selected for the instructional league.  If I had to guess, they will work with him to develop a second (or third) pitch and get him back in the mix as a starter.

Saw in the paper yesterday that Michael Feliz will be in instructional league.

According to Mctaggarts list, Ovando is going to be there after all.  Houser is not on the list but there are two slots open for pitchers still.  Toney not on list.

Per @zacharylevine "RHP Ruben Alaniz, RHP Adrian Houser and OF Teoscar Hernandez have been added to Astros instructional league roster since first announced."
