What the Giants and Astros talked about last year
« on: August 17, 2012, 03:08:44 pm »
Talking about their shiny new cocker spaniel of an outfielder, the Giants GM said that No, he didn't go Pence because they knew Melky was about to get suspended for 'roids, in fact, they tried to trade for him last year. What did the Astros want for Pence, you ask? SF Chronicle Reporter Henry Schulman twitters "Wheeler plus another prospect. Same w/ Bourn".

Doesn't matter who the other prospect would've been, that would have easily been better than what they did get for Bourn.

I live in the Bay Area and I remember at the time of the deal a lot of the chatter in these parts with respect to Bourn was the Astros allegedly asking for Brandon Belt as part of any deal and Sabean refusing to include him.  Apparently, he (Belt) was considered untouchable, a cornerstone for the future of the giants' organization.

When I read the anatomy of the deal outlined in Business Week and its mention of another GM reaching out at the last minute with an offer of better prospects than what the braves were offering, I assumed it was referencing Sabaen.  This would be the first I've heard of Wheeler in those discussions.

Belt was still considered that going into this season, from what I can tell.  There were countless articles about him finally getting a full time job at first.

Dude: I live in Napa. I respect Sabean but that dropped a bit when he went for Gunther, who's not been doing well so far. From what I can tell, the Phightin's fans are delighted to see him gone..

Which Wheeler is he talking about here?  As usual, I'm at a loss...

Zack Wheeler. He's a pretty good pitching prospect who ended up being traded for Beltran at last year's deadline.

Thank you.  That would definitely have been a better return for Bourn than what they got.
