It's great to see that superstition is alive and well in the game. Good hammer to finish off Weeks.

I will continue to stand by my belief that Raymond is not nearly as terrible as Dolan.

I think JD and Raymond will be tolerable. If Raymond can chortle, I'd consider him a league average sub for Brownie.

And if he can avoid talking about pitch count every 5 minutes, I'd consider him a slightly above league average sub for Brownie.

Back-to-back doubles plates a run, as Pearce advances Gonzalez to 3B with one out with an F9.

We lose another duck on the pond opportunity with one out, but that wasn't Gonzalez's fault. Maxwell will learn how to elevate an offering to score a run that I'll bet that we'll need.

Dolan sounds like Kermit the fucking frog when he gets excited. He loses 1000 points for that alone, then you pile his FTCub handjobbery on top... Yuck.

Lyles with too much of the plate to Segura, which sets them up with two outs and runners on 1B and 2B.

What the fuck was that?! 1-2 and you throw a good hitting pitcher a fastball?

Fucking stupid.

Listening to the radio broadcast is really painful right now.  Milo is in full story mode.  Called almost none of Gonzalez' at bat.  At one point said "here's the 2-2", then went back to the story.

Gallardo looks like he can hit low on the outside corner all day with his heater, and he will continue if the hitters never adjust.

Thankfully, I haven't heard Milo in years. I want to remember him for what he was, not for what he has become, which sounds like a cartoon character.

He's painting right now. I'm not sure what the hitters can do with him when he's dialed in like this other than roll over on that pitch. So it's pick your poison.

Who was it yesterday that stupidly suggested that Moore was as bad as Wallace at 3B? Wallace doesn't make those plays in this inning.

Moore is kinda feast or famine at third. He made two sparkling plays when he came up, then kicked a few in later games. Wallace looks like everything is a surprise at third.

Ahem. That was me, although I didn't specifically compare him to Wallace. I haven't seen either play third that much, but they have both made some awful errors and they have both looked like stop-gap solutions at best.

I'm sure Moore has played a lot more 3B than Wallace, so it makes sense that he looks "more natural". Moore, CJ, Wallace... all bad over there, to my eye.

I still use Tony Chachere's, which isn't too far away from where I grew up. I'm unfamiliar with Cajun Power, but I have tried some other seasonings, but they all seem to try to mimic Tony Chachere's, so I stick with the original. The sausages sound tasty!

Cajun Power is a tomato-based garlic sauce, a little bit like a thin barbecue sauce but garlicky.

Damnit, Snyder. That's not a difficult throw to execute. I agree with JD that a good throw might not have gotten Segura, as Gonzalez clanks one to set the Brewers up for a Lyles inning.

Cajun Power is a tomato-based garlic sauce, a little bit like a thin barbecue sauce but garlicky.

I'll have to try it out. I'm not very imaginative on burgers; I just use worstershire sauce and Tony's.

Reuben, that was an example of why Moore isn't a regular third baseman. The play was to first base, conceding the run. 3-1 now.

Hatch green chile and cheese pork sausage. And yes, I did use Cajun Power in my hamburgers.

What time?

Attended a pool party yesterday afternoon/evening at a friend's place just outside of town. Pork medallions, cream cheese and sausage stuffed jalapenos wrapped in bacon, chicken-steak-onion-red pepper kabobs, porterhouse steaks (or gigantic T-bones, not sure) ... a double-hulled VLCC tanker full of Makers Mark 46 and Angel's Envy, naked women in the pool (after a good deal of Makers Mark), etc., etc.

I think I'll take it easy today.

Not really.  With bourbon, I usually mixed in a little water to smooth the rough edge, but I was drinking tumblers of that stuff straight up, over ice.

Yeah, this whole day has been an exercise in doing very little.  Trying to stay horizontal as much as possible.

Luckily my significant other got way more hammered than even I did, so she is not nagging me to do shit around the house today. Plus she is very grateful I gently dissuaded her from becoming one of the naked babes in the pool last night. I think she really, really wanted to do it.

Hah. I asked her that. She loves reading those stories, too. But I think she is glad not to be starring in that particular one.

Dark Star: what's your source for your sig? DeVaughn's original? It took me a couple of minutes to remember where I heard it, and then I remembered: it's a backup chorus on Al Kooper's "Comin' Back in a Cadillac", off of his Black Coffee album. It's apparently been used a million times by different artists, although I didn't know that until I started looking around.

Can the Brewers' bullpen screw things up one more time?

Yeah, the original.  That song imprinted itself on my mind at a tender age, and for some reason it never went away.  I didn't know of the couplets other uses, though. Thanks.

Shitfick. At least we were in the game again today.

They've only got two wins to show for it, but they've kept things close in five of the past six. It may not last long, but over this past week seeing Wallace, Pearce, Storey, and Greene contribute has made the games feel a bit less hopeless. Castro is on his way back, and if Lowrie sees any significant playing time again this season, the final month might be less painful than what we've been watching for the past several weeks.* The Astros have a 5.5 game "lead" on the Rockies for the first overall pick next year, and if they continue to keep themselves in games, that race might start to get interesting.

*assuming Castro does not give too many games away on passed balls.

There is that, which I like a lot since it focuses on the positive, which makes me even more "happy" than I already am! I for one would gladly cede the number one pick to the Rox in exchange for improved play the rest of the way. We'll still end up with the number two pick, which will have to be good too.

To me, the main positive from the home stand, beyond the glorious wins and the improved pen, is it provides a glimmer of hope for the young arms.  Harrell had already shown something, but Lyles showed real progress in his two starts, as did Keuchel, although his ceiling is considerably lower.  Any glimmer, however small, is welcome considering how bleak it had become.

I agree wholeheartedly. Noe and I jousted a bit over who had the higher ceiling: Harrell or Lyles. Eventually, I agreed with Noe that it was Lyles, but I still think that Harrell is farther along right now, which may purely be a function of the age disparity between the two. However, Lyles's stuff is more multi-faceted than Harrell's.

Did you go all out and dig a hole in the back yard and brick it in and all that? I have always wanted to do that and may very well out at the house, actually. Or did you cook the pork in a regular grill? Or a smoker?

First off, I live in NW Austin. Digging a hole here is physically impossible.

We bought ourselves a Big Green Egg for our 30th anniversary a few years ago, and that's what I use for everything. Because it was just the two of us this weekend, I just cooked a smallish piece of pork shoulder (3 1/2 lbs). Marinated it overnight in the annatto/pepper/oregano/clove/cinnamon/orange juice/lime juice paste, then wrapped it all up in banana leaves put it inside of a cast iron Dutch oven (uncovered for the first 1 1/2 hours or so) and put it in the Egg at about 325 for 3+ hours. It came out a little drier than I wanted, and next time I'll add some more liquid while it cooks. Maybe lower and longer, too.

More than 30 years? I am jealous. I never wanted to get divorced, either time.

I think a Dutch oven is a noble substitute for a hole in the ground. Did you brine it? I would almost certainly brine it before marinating it. Still, I'm surprised that the banana leaves allowed it to be anywhere close to drier than you'd like.

Needed more banana wine.

That might be exactly what it needed.

I've had one for 5 or 6 years now.  It's quite the cult.
