Dear Santa: please give me a game in which the Astros don't give up a first-inning run (or three).
I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed
Up and down the M1 in some luminous yo-yo toy
But the future has to change - and to change I've got to destroy
Oh look out Lennon here I come - land ahoy-hoy-hoy

Triple for Jones to Tal's Hill. Galarraga better get the ball down, or this will get out of hand in a hurry.

Wandy amped? He just hit 92 on the gun. I've never seen him get there before.

We can only hope.

He's been getting there this year. Or at least I'm pretty sure I remember seeing that number on several occasions. Of course, I'm getting old.

Normally, that would be right, but this is the Astros, who are a great remedy for whatever ails a slumping pitcher.

I've seen every one of his starts for the past four seasons, and I've only rarely seen him even hit 91. He sits between 87-90 usually.

Mr. Happy, you're getting your wish in Chicago, they're twirling around like they've got St. Vitus' Dance:

Quote
“Dempster will have to answer some tough questions if he is still a Cub after the deadline,” one executive told me. “That will be one press conference I would want to see. He will have to explain to the fans why he chose to stay on a team that is going nowhere when he could have been in Atlanta and possibly pitching in the playoffs. That will be interesting to hear.”

That's from some jackal at CSNChicago.com, who thinks it's up to Dempster to allow the Cubs to get maximum value, and doesn't speak to any of the other angles. What a train wreck.

I guess that Bixler will stay until Lowrie gets back because he can play SS. Nice play there to end the frame, with an assist to Downsie. 2-1 Bottom 4

NOV is National Oilwell Varco, a huge, Houston based oilfield services company. They are one of the corporate sponsors that occupy a position on the large sign in left field that is a real plus for the city.

The fat CEO (sitting in the Diamond Club while his employees sit together somewhere in the upper deck) said they'd all grab shovels and go repair little league fields in Alief.

Guess folks actually go to the Coushatta casino.

I'd go if I thought there was a chance of meeting the woman who was leading in the commercials a couple of years ago.

Jones out going to 3B, which was ill-advised.

There's the obligatory strike out from Bogusevic. Two outs to Corporan.

Grilli on to face our best in the bottom of the ninth. Pray. Hard. Put on a rally cap. Spank the rally monkey. Anything for a win. I'm  doing the recap tonight and would love to write about a walkoff win.

I thought that LSU baseball was bad in the spring of 1979 (12-34). I think that this team is worse, relatively speaking to the level of competition, not a comparison of the two teams.

I haven't seen anything from Snyder-a subpar receiver and his stick ain't good.
But... you're talking about Corporan. Maybe he's improved a lot since he was up last year - I've barely seen him this stint - but if not, I don't see what he's got going for him except his bat's fairly hot right now. Snyder at least has MLB experience, and seems like the pitchers trust him. I know he hasn't thrown out many guys this year, but is he really a "subpar receiver"?

He's terrible. The Astros are literally the only team he could play for. I doubt most organizations with decent farm systems would consider him as a AAA catcher.

I didn't say that Corporan is good; he's not. He has hit a little bit this season, which is unexpected. Snyder is an awful receiver.  About the only thing that Snyder does well is handle the pitchers, but his actual work behind the plate? Dreadful. Hell, throwing out a runner? Snyder has trouble enough just catching the baseball. Snyder's bat has been much worse than I expected. It's very slow; he hits only mistakes. I think that his back is a problem for him, but to me he's done as a big league catcher, which is why he's an Astro this season.

By the way, I saw that the Brewers just signed Quintero... which is odd, since he was just signed by the Marlins a couple weeks ago, and bb-ref makes no mention of him being released.

Anybody know anything about Powell's defense? Last I looked, he'd hit pretty well vs. lefties at OKC, which would seem to make him a good platoon partner with Castro.

I saw that too. He must have asked for his release, because that was quick.  I don't know a thing about Powell.

I only saw one game with Powell and remember the scouts behind me derisively calling him "Tubby". He certainly looked that part, but not the part of a backup for a MLB team.

Well, not all catchers are shaped like Ausmus or Castro or Posey, though I guess 255 lbs (his listed weight on bb-ref) is a bit heavy even for a 6'3" catcher.

Numbers-wise, he's thrown out 40% of runners in his 107 MLB games at catcher, and 45% in the minors. So it seems he's got a pretty good arm back there, plus he's only allowed 3 passed balls in the majors, but obviously there's a lot more to being a competent catcher than just those things.

The criteria for catchers has changed a lot over the years. In days long gone, before, control freak coaches usurped the pitch calling (a back slide development, if you ask me), catchers were judged in part by what kind of game they called. But no more. Do they have soft hands back there?  Are they "quiet"back there, i.e., how much distracting movement do they make? How well do they frame the pitches? How well do they block pitches in the dirt? How do they handle pitchers?
