Wandy's departure
« on: July 25, 2012, 11:11:03 am »
Not about the trade, but the scene in the dugout when he was saying his goodbyes.

I liked Wandy, and I loved watching his progress over the years from what I would characterize as a hopeless pitcher who tended to implode at the first sign of trouble, to a very solid major leaguer.  Kudos to the organization for sticking with him by the way, as they saw something and held to that belief.

What kind of bothered me was the tone of his exit.  Very few of the players or coaches seemed to care.  Maybe he was not well liked by his teammates or maybe the team morale is so shell-shocked to be aware, or even care.  It just sort of sucked to see a longtime contributor, who by all accounts never whined about things and did his job, to leave in such a manner.

It seemed like hugs and handshakes all around to me.  Wandy himself said it was very emotional saying goodbye to his teammates and that he almost cried.

I noticed the same thing. Bogusevic was typical, he sort of half turned to Wandy and reading his lips appeared to ask You're gone?, perfunctorily shook his hand and turned back to the game. JD was the only guy I saw go out of his way to seek Wandy out and actually communicate with him in any meaningful way. I don't know whether the other guys wanted to wait until they got to the clubhouse or if they simply didn't care.

Brocail was simply gushing with emotion.

This sums up very well my feelings about Wandy.

It seemed a little awkward to me, I guess, but not like no one cared. I think they were all caught off-guard, with it happening in the middle of the game. Plus, maybe he knew (and said) that he'd be hanging around town until the Pirates get here, so not the one and only final goodbye.

I've been told that a player getting traded is often an emotional thing for many of them, and as a general practice, they don't make a big deal of it in public.  They shake hands and say things like "hey, that's baseball, it's a business".  They don't want to risk getting overly emotional.  Privately is where they do their hugs and crying and comraderie things.  It's possible that none of them cared about Wandy, but I don't think a low-keyed reaction in the dugout during the game is necessarily indicative of that.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

All of the guys Wandy played with for a significant amount of time have already been traded.  Wesley Wright should've been the most emotional, I guess.

Plus I'm pretty sure everyone in the world saw a Wandy trade coming.

That wasn't my impression at all. For being ball players and guys, I still saw some emotion. And then consider what he told Tags.

Brocail was simply gushing with emotion.

I meant to say that JD was the only player as I saw Brocail act as you mention.

I assume that HH is correct, that whatever personal exchanges happen are most likely to happen in the clubhouse. The team was after all in the middle of a game. There's no reason to go around boo-hooing like Boehner when you're trying to do your job.

When he got to the end of the dugout he went to the water cooler.  That seemed odd in itself, but then he fumbled the cups.  He looked like he didn't know how to act, which he likely didn't.  Never been traded before.

that is what I saw too.  He even paused like do I wait for the guys to come off the field or do I go on in the clubhouse.

Always ready to go to a game.

I figure alot of the guys in the dugout are wondering if/when the shoe is going to drop on them. Most should be.

I predict that there will be blood in the water after July 31, with significant changes to the roster. It wouldn't surprise me to see five guys change, although I think that it will be two-Schreefer and Bogusevic.

What's the concensus on what Barnes can offer in CF?  Nice stat lines the past year...how's his range and arm?

I don't know much about him. Luhnow likes him, and he is feasting on AAA pitching. His fielding is supposed to be plus. Right there, he's got our current offerings beat. If he hits at all, he's light years better than we have. I expect to see him around August 1, if not sooner, especially if this losing streak continues to double-digits like it appears that it will.

Barnes is the next great hope?  I hope he succeeds like some around here expect, but I'll frankly be surprised if he comes up and everyone feels like they have solved the CF part of the puzzle.

I suspect you will see an adequate to good defender, but I doubt he will be any better defensively than Schafer.  Hopefully, his bat will be better.  I think the question will be how many Ks on breaking balls he has between his hits, and how he deals with that.

btw, Luhnow saying positive things about him is completely meaningless IMO.
