Had to look up who are hitting coach was.  With the way the team is struggling at the plate now, we should start hearing his name a lot more from the Chron Comment Section Mouth Breathing fans soon.  It is like clockwork.

Nobody is talking about it all... but the last AB I saw from Martinez, he has the "yips" in the worse way right now. I'm sure he is probably showing it in the cages too. He has absolutely no clue how to hit a major league pitch right now. It is as if they took someone from the stands and told him "Win a million dollars if you can hit one out of the infield" and they couldn't even touch one pitch.

I've not been watching...

Any thought that it might simply be the result of there actually being some scouting of all the new hitters?

Agreed. His swing is atrocious (from what I saw the last time he had an AB). I'm in his corner, he's a fine young man from what I can tell, but something is in his head right now that has him messed up. His mechanics are non-existent and that is dangerous for him right now. In short, he would get worse, not better, if he tried to play his way through this in the major leagues right now. He needs the time away to relax and refocus and then maybe show he has his swing back in the cages.

Of course, this is me speculating just based on the AB I saw him take. His head is all wrong right now.

There is also an Assistant Hitting Coach this season as well.

Watched Martinez AB today and even though he was a little late on some pitches, he seemed to have his old swing back. Hands were staying true, had them back and he swung nice and level on pitches. Looks like he's working on his timing now in the cages.

Would I be overstating it to say his second hit of the game (2 outs, down 1, runner on 2B), was huge in getting the slump-monkey off his back and that he'll be pressing a hell of a lot less now?  (And I know it seems silly, but was that his in that situation as huge for him and his confidence at the plate as I imagine it was?).

I don't know how big it was to him. However, I do know that JD experienced a little success today, and he'll be able to watch some film of his AB's today and build on it tomorrow when the team returns home. The hitters I knew who went into slumps always told me that the only way out of a slump was one AB at a time; one game at a time. Never being a hitter, I always took their word for it. I agree with Noe; JD appeared today to just work on his timing and hitting the ball where it is pitched. You have to take what the pitcher gives you and make the best of it. When you're slumping, you expand your strike zone and get further out of sync, which is what I think happened to JD.

There is those baby steps some guys take when working out of a slump. I was afraid given how badly he looked and how much pine time he was getting that it was worse than a slump. So if he's been putting in time in the cage correcting some bad things he was doing mechanically, then he needed to have success to put it in his mind that his time in the cages was work well invested. There is nothing worse than putting in hard work and having nothing to show for it.

I think today was huge for him because it put that thought in his head that he's okay and he'll do fine.
