I bet that the Piranha is chafing on the pine today and missing Burnett. However, he's been scuffling lately, so I agree with the decision to rest him today. We go down in order in the first. 0- Bottom 1

This season, Road Wandy has been as good as Home Wandy. Hopefully, that continues today, since we're hitting .199 in the last six games.

After inducing a F9, Walker doubles to LF. Here comes McCutcheon, who ropes the first pitch to LF for another 2B, scoring Walker.

What does everyone think of the proposal being kicked around and possibly being implemented next season to convert the fake to third check to first into a balk? I could go either way on it. Wandy strikes out Alvarez. Two outs.

I don't see the point. Is there some confusion to the play?

So if you're superstitious and have a good day at the plate with a pink bat, do you order up a case of them?

I don't see the point. Is there some confusion to the play?

It goes to general intent of the balk rule that the pitcher is not able to deceive the baserunner. Anecdotally, I haven't seen anyone asleep enough at 1B to fall for it, so I'm unsure as to the real reason why this issue is hot right now or who is behind it. They're also going after the "whirling dervish" fake to 2B, which I could never do anyway, so if they want to change that into a balk, it won't be a big deal to me. Could it be a game delay issue, which has been the impetus for many changes lately to speed up the game?

Bottom third featured some bang-bang plays at the first sack. JD looked like he wasn't finished with his Mother's Day wishes.

What the fuck is Brownie talking about!? Some slapdick that emails him about umpire positioning... That was painfully weird.

I rewound to take a look at the ump's positioning on the second call. He was in perfect position to see it from what I could tell, so Brownie was working hard to plug his buddy apparently.

I'll have to take your word for it since I'm devoid of umpiring mechanics knowledge. Given that this is the show, I'd be surprised if he was out of position, so Brownie was probably plugging his buddy.

Unless you're a lazy asshole, it's not hard to be in good position to make calls. Unless something crazy happens or the throw is way offline, the normal position should be the right one. You want to be at an angle where you can see the glove, the base, and the runner arriving at the base all in the same general area, which is usually at about the 45 degree angle between the part of the bag that faces second and the part of the bag that faces right field.

I see that. I think that positioning becomes more critical when you don't have an umpire at every base.

Absolutely it does.

And the big problem you run to in most rec leagues for baseball and softball is the umpires are lazy assholes, and don't have much interest in moving around to get in position. If you position correctly, all you have to do is see it right. If you're out of position, you end up guessing/cheating more often than not because you can't actually see what happened.

Blowing a call happens to everyone. Blowing a call because you're too lazy to take 3 steps one way or the other to be in the correct position infuriates me.

Agreed. Looked like a bone being tossed to the Roots to compensate for the passel of close calls at 1B going the Astros' way. Never fear, though, Castro the Astro gets his second knock to drive home Lee to knot the score.

Why is JD hitting third today? He's 0 for forever and they sit him out three games, and then they run him back out there as if nothing is wrong. He should be down in the order.

Burnett actually is throwing pretty well today. Come on, Castro. Let's keep it going.

He's had some nasty breaking stuff. Tantalizing, then it rolls off the table.

Bogusevic almost made a major mental fuckuip. Gotta stay on the bag if you don't know for certain where the ball is. Now the bases are full after Burnett's error. Come on, Gonzalez.

I can understand why Millsie is sticking with Wandy, but he might get second guessed on not pinchhitting for Wandy with a rested bullpen.

That's why I said that I undersrtood it. As a pitcher, you never want to come out of any game that you have a decent chance of finishing. Given that there were two outs, thanks to JOyce's horrific strike three call on Gonzalez, that was the right call.

Alvarez ties it up on a sacfly to LF. McLouth to pinch hit for McGehee. Yep, I've been giving the wrong Jim shit all afternoon. Jim Reynolds is HPU and has been dreadful in several calls on swings without help. Myers flashes a 93 to strike oout McLouth. Two outs. Pressley pinch hits.

It would figure that on a day when I had four starters going, two of them, ironically facing each other, are in a very long rain delay and probably going to be cancelled. Meanwhile, back at the real baseball ranch, the Astros get nada in the top of the tenth. 2-2 Bottom 10

If you're going to take Wandy out after 8 dazzling innings anyway, why not pinch hit for him with the bases loaded in the 7th?

Because then you would need three innings out of the bully. Given that the bully is well rested and has been surprisingly effective, I probably would have pinch hit for him, even with two outs. However, I'm not sitting in the same dugout with Wandy, who probably was pleading his case with reckless abandon.

2-2 Bottom 11. Hope that Lopez comes back out to pitch the eleventh.

In Mihobs's SnS War, we don't do bobbleheads either, and especially not for dipshit competing owners. Wright strikes out Alvarez, so the Pirates will lead off with a pitcher hitting in the bottom of the 12th. That worked out nicely.

You don't have bobbleheads?  All my players contracted for bobbleheads.  That's why I have to trade them before their bobblehead day.

Hey Astros, how about taking a bat up to the plate this inning? That wet, rolled up newspaper y'all are swinging currently isn't doing shit.

Wright destroyed Alvarez.

I  have to say that Coach was right and I  was wrong about Wright. I think that the difference for Wright now as opposed to before is that he's stopped nibbling solely with that sweeping offspeed pitch and started using his fastball again. I'm slowly developing confidence in him. Millsie's obviously was ahead of me  in that regard.

That was the THIRD fucking shitty check swing call that's cost the Astros an out. Change it up, you bunch of cocksuckers, guess the other way once in a while if you're not sure.

I didn't get a great look at it, but maybe Maxwell and/or MarGon deserve some blame for letting Barmes get to 2nd on that bloop?

Folks: This was a classic case of how the game has changed. In the old days, Wandy comes out to pitch the ninth, with Myers ready just in case Wandy runs into problems. In other words, Myers would have been a "fireman" instead of a "closer." In today's game, you can't fault Millsie from going to Myers with the top of the order coming up in the ninth. However, in the old days, Millsie would have been second guessed for bringing in a cold pitcher to pitch when you had a hot one going. Shitfuck.

They would have scored a batter later anyway after FeRod gave up another single, a sac fly, squeeze, or fielder's choice.

I don't have any confidence in either Fernando Rodriguez or David Carpenter with money on the line.

Nah. It was the classic bloop double. It had just enough go to get over the infield and then it was rolling toward the LF line. No-mans land in a big ballpark.

Plus, we were playing "no doubles" so we ironically allowed one.

Because then you would need three innings out of the bully. Given that the bully is well rested and has been surprisingly effective, I probably would have pinch hit for him, even with two outs. However, I'm not sitting in the same dugout with Wandy, who probably was pleading his case with reckless abandon.

Mills is practicing for the AL.  Pinch what-now?

And top off the shitty check swing clusterfuck, McTaggart mcTweets: Myers thought he struck Tabata out on 3-2 pitch on check swing to start 9th, & replays back that up. He gets that call, Astros likely win.

Wandy was dealing. I was really hoping that Mills was going to give him the opportunity to finish out the game.
