Headed out to SD in July to catch a game at Petco (and drink good beer). Any recommendations?

Do not be tempted by the Carne Asada Fries at Petco.

Spend as much time as you can at Balboa Park.  Magnificent.

Also, go buy a house in La Jolla or Del Mar.

Balboa Park is pretty cool. Beautiful gardens, old-Spanish architecture. Unfortunately we didn't allow time for the zoo.

I don't know if you have decided on a hotel but we liked the Marriott Courtyard downtown. It's a high-rise in an old bank bldg. Not the standard Courtyard setup. Walking distance to Gaslight District and Petco.

The North Park area just north of Balboa park has some good night life; restaurants, breweries, sights etc. etc.  Umm eat Mexican food as much as possible. I like the Lucha Libre Taco Shop. Carne Asada fries and California burritos are the way to go.  Balboa Park is great as well as the downtown area near Petco. You'll enjoy the game at Petco for sure.

If there's racing at Del Mar, go and watch it from The Brigantine and have fish tacos.  Even if there isn't racing, go to The Brig. and have fish tacos.

Also, eat as many fish tacos as is humanly possible while you're there.

I like fish tacos.

Point Loma is cool, especially if you go all the way to the end of the road. Hotel del Coronado is a fun place to visit for a short time - have lunch, look around the grounds and leave.

That was my impression of the Del also. We enjoyed drinks on the porch overlooking the ocean but man was that hotel crowded. People everywhere.

If you go to the hotel Del Coronado, there is a great Mexican place across the street called Miguel's. Also, if you are a Top Gun fan, Kansas City BBQ across the street from the downtown convention center is ok and actually has decent food. For a hotel recommendation, I usually stay at the Hotel Solamar.

I like to take people to Hash House for breakfast/brunch.

There are a lot of breweries to check out, tour, taste.  My favorite beer-wise is probably Alpine, though it's a bit of a drive.

Torrey Pines state park has some scenic hiking trails.  Down the road is the Gliderport and Black's Beach, if you're into hang-gliding over nudists.

If you currently enjoy your marriage, I recommend single-person kayaks for that trip.

Have the Fried Chicken Benedict at Hash House. My 14-year-old ate the whole big honkin' thing, but it was so yummy.

Another vote for Point Loma, and for a drink at the Del for a nice view. I think it's supposed to be haunted, too, so ask a staff member to tell you the stories.

Go hang out in Mission Beach or Pacific Beach for a day.  Or stay up there for the night and get drunk.  The women running around those neighborhoods are incredible.

Appreciate the recs! We're going Friday to Tuesday (believe the Astros open their series on Monday) and I know the lady wants to do the zoo one day. I'm looking forward to bringing back some Lost Abbeys.

Petco is a great park.  If it's a day game, it's perfect.  If it's night then bring sleeves.

Don't get food inside the park.  Outside the right field gate is Lolita's at the Park (corner of 10th and K).  Lolita's is my favorite chain of taco shops in SD.  Grab a California burrito to go and carry it in the park (carne asada fries too messy to carry in).  No restrictions on bringing food into the park, but drinks are a no-no.

To eat:
- Best fish tacos are at south beach bar and grill in Ocean Beach.  Also has an amazing octopus cocktail.  Rubio's is a good bet for fish tacos as well.  Rubio's used to be my favorite, but they changed the batter on the fish to make it crispier, but I think it just holds more grease.
- Lucha libre is very good, but very crowded since the appearance on Man vs. Food.  A good substitute is downtown on 4th Ave near Horton Plaza called "Micho's".  Amazing gourmet taco shop.
- Miguel's is my favorite "sit-down" mexican restaurant in the SD area.  Great jalapeno cream sauce.  Their shrimp enchiladas are amazing.
- Find an In-n-Out Burger and order a number one combo with the burger "Animal Style" = grilled onions and extra special sauce and the burger patties are fried on the grill with a little mustard.

To do:
- Rent a bicycle and ride "The Strand" from Coronado.
- Go out to Cabrillo Monument at the end of Point Loma, also find your way down to the tide pools in the state park at the end of Point Loma.
- Forget the zoo and drive out to the Safari Park near Poway.  I always enjoy this more than the zoo and there is less of a crowd.  Requires more walking than the zoo, though.
- The races will be going on at Del Mar during the time you will be here.

Sleeves or a hoodie are a very good idea for a night game any time of the year in SD.  Unfortunately, I will be deploying before the Stros get to town this year, so I will just have to look forward to seeing them in Anaheim next season.

Yep and a California burrito is essentially carne asada fries wrapped up in a tortilla for easier transport.

Thanks for all of the recs!

Our plan right now is pretty much...

Friday - afternoon wine tour in La Jolla
Saturday - Zoo, and maybe dinner at Sanska's
Sunday - afternoon Brewery tour (Stone, San Marcos, Lost Abbey)
Monday - Gaslamp and Astros game that evening

I suspect we'll fill in some of those blanks with aforementioned restaurants, and the rest with brewpubs (for me) and shopping (for her).

Any opinions on these spots?

O’Briens Pub (http://www.obrienspub.net/)
Toronado
Blind Lady Ale House (http://www.blindladyalehouse.com/)
Downtown Johnny Brown’s (http://downtownjohnnybrowns.com/)
Hamilton Tavern (http://hamiltonstavern.com/)
Luigi’s at the Beach (http://www.luigisatthebeach.com/)
Neighborhood (http://www.neighborhoodsd.com/index.php)

FWIW... the Astros are 2-1 in games I have seen them play outside of Texas, so I'm hoping that counters the awful road record this season.

Great beer selections at O'Briens and Toronado, similar at Blind Lady and Hamiltons.  Just a matter of preferred environment.  O'Briens is in a strip mall, so it's pretty relaxed, but not much to do around it (unless you're looking for Asian food)-- it's really all about just coming to enjoy quality beer.  Toronado is on 30th street, so a more active environment, but can also get loud and crowded.  I frequent and enjoy these two all the time.  Blind Lady, I've only been to once, seemed a little more upscale, a lot trendier.  I've only been to Hamiltons during midday, so don't know what it's like at night.

One of the guys on Shaggybevo runs a SD beer blog and asked me to pen a guest entry based on a brewery tour I did while in town. Here's the link for anyone interested in my somewhat hazy memories of a great day: http://sandiegobeerinsider.com/san-diego-trip-report/

The Stone Brewery is pretty awesome. I went to school at Cal State San Marcos which is like 10 minutes away and they would do a yearly beerfest at the campus.
