Even my piddly cable channel, reliable through the years to at least have a back door channel with the Astros, is part of the betrayal.

I'm pissed.  Since the 90's the Astros have been on the main station.  Now they screw the Astros fans.

Word is cable customers in Corpus and San Antonio are also getting the Rangers.  Not sure if that is TWC or not.

Call and complain.

I'm making the switch soon.  Recommend any particular package?

Also, is Dish Network still a viable option?

Yep.  No consistent Astros in HD, no money from me.   Any uVerse customers out there get the Astros.

I told TWC-Austin that and they transferred me to register a complaint, so I did.

I was referring to TWC-Austin removing the Astros from being the primary team on Channel 1639 (FSSW/FSH HD).

Dish usually has the Astros in HD on an alternate channel when the team from Arlington is also on FSW.  Tonight they were on channel 250.

MLB contracted with a cable company that they knew would do an inadequate job. There's plenty of piss to go around for all parties.

That is not their policy. They will have some Saturdays when FOX broadcast is doing Saturday nite games and cable FOX can't compete against. The game was carried tonight by FOX SW-Houston. I got it in Dallas area on DirectTV.

Sorry so few got to see this one. Harrell pitched a heck of a game. Gonzalez played very well at SS, incl. a double in the gap, and they were sharp all around.

No.  Back when there was a reasonable expectation that they'd be on Fox, they'd often go un-televised when they weren't a game of the week.

This is confusing. Best I can gather is: Direct TV carries Fox Sports Southwest (which shows the Rangers over the Astros when they conflict), BUT turns on a Fox Sports Houston feed when FS Houston is televising the Astros.
Is this correct?

It looks like Direct TV already carries many of the Comcast sports networks, but it looks like you have to pay for the most expensive package to get them.

Don't know that they "turn it on", but yes, they show the Astros on FSH.

FSH also shows the Rockets, Dynamo, UH, Rice, HS sports etc. It's not 24 hr programming if that's what you mean by "turn it on", but the do show games other than the Astros.

Apparantly it depends on where you live. In north Tx. I get FSSW-H but the only programming I get is Astros games. No Rockets games, no other programmng. Just a dark screen. Sometimes they even cut the post-game show off early.

Yes, this is what I expect in Austin.  However, I can get the Rockets with the NBA package as the NBA is not as backwards as MLB with their blackout rules.

Since Direct TV already has Comcast sports channels, I'm hoping next year won't be an issue.

I've had DirecTV in dc, LA and now Chicago.  Only issue I generally have is if it's a Saturday day game and not carried on my local FOX affiliate.  Otherwise, I have no trouble at all.  I do have the baseball package so no idea if you can view reliably without that.

The Rangers are on FoxSW here on UVerse--they show two separate FoxSw channels.

That's because FSSW is actually FoxSportsDallas. DirecTV actually adds a second channel just for the Houston teams, a channel they don't otherwise have room for. I'm just saying when you live in one team's home television market, you're lucky to consistently get another day in and day out.

Not what I'm talking about. It's the broadcast markets for MLB, but not every television in Texas gets the same channels.

The way I understand it is that FSSW has an extra channel that the provider can market separately and choose to use as they wish.  For TWC in Austin, it is 77 and they give it as part of their package but either choose not to use it, or to use it when something desirable (in their minds) is on at the same time as the Spurs or Rangers.  Increasingly, they rarely choose to use 77 for the Astros.

Direct TV, in Austin at least, has the FSSW main channel, and the alternate available on the most expensive package.  However, they apparently turn on FS Houston during Astros games.  AT&T Uverse apparently has FSSW and FS Houston full time.

Basically, the providers have choices.  AT&T and Direct TV choose to provide Astros games, TWC chooses to fuck over Astros fans whenever they can.

DirecTV broadcasts FSH for live games only, though not just the Astros.  They say not doing FSH full time is a bandwidth issue.  Not sure of the details exactly, but I don't want a FoxSports channel for anything other than games anyway, so I really don't care.

I had the same issue for a long time, living as I do in the sparsely populated area half-way between Downtown and the Galleria.  Recently, though, U-Verse internet service has been shown to be available, and I am told by a rep. that this is a precursor to the full service showing up in 4-6 months.

Meanwhile, Comcast have finally started broadcasting the full XFinity package to my home, but still do not offer their AnyRoom DVR service, which is a whole nother technical issue so they say.  Assuming both get their full sets of wares available to my home address, here's my dilemma:

Comcast:  Top Gear BBC America in HD, but no Fox Soccer in HD and no Fox Soccer Plus at all.
U-Verse:  Both soccer channels in HD but BBC Americas in SD only.
Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.

I live in San Antonio and I just ditched Time Warner for DirecTV.  I was in North Carolina for most of the season last year but we always got Astros games in HD when I lived in SA in past years.  The Rangers usually got the SD channel 50 when both were on at the same time.  They may have switched this season but it's not an issue for me anymore.

How does Dish/DirecTV's picture quality compare to Uverse?  I found Uverse to be inferior to Time Warner in that regard.

Also, is it possible to sign up with Dish/DirecTV without doing the 1-2 year contract?  Which one is better?

Is your aversion to DirecTV just on principal at this point?

I have found UVerse to be FAR superior to DirecTV in every respect.

In what ways?

Ways in which DirecTV is superior as far as I'm concerned:

1) NFL Sunday Ticket
2) Unlimited simultaneous HD streams

Advantages of Uverse:

1) Bundled internet

Better picture quality, more consistent reception, I have no deed of Sunday Ticket when I have Red Zone Channel, and I don't need more than 4 streams.

Seems to me that you'd much rather have all the soccer, in HD no less.

That's my thinking.  I can buy Top Gear in HD through iTunes, and it's better because you get the full hour, not the edit-to-fit-commercials hour.

Interesting that people continue to throw out the tired old canard about DirecTV having reception problems.  I guess the cable companies did a bang up job with that hatchet.

I have no idea what Red Zone Channel is, but if it doesn't show every game complete in HD, then it's not even in the same universe with Sunday Ticket.

You realize that dishes don't crap out in bad weather and you don't have to bolt it to your house, don't you?  Reminds me of the old cable commercial where the guy complained about having to buy "excessive extra equipment" in reference to his dish needing a grounding wire.

Red Zone channel is basically a live highlights show on Sundays.  It runs commercial free and flicks from game to game whenever something interesting is happening, and catches you up on things that just happened.  It's like having a very informed person operating your remote.

It's not Sunday Ticket, but it's a hell of a lot cheaper than Sunday Ticket.  Plus, you don't have to destroy your house by attaching a satellite to the roof that will fall onto your car at the first hint of rain.

Then your dish was improperly installed.  In 14 years of DirecTV, I can count the number of times it's gone out on one hand, and that includes hurricane related.  In other words, every 10 years, the dish goes out about as often as the cable does in a month.

That depends on what you're measuring, of course.  For me, I really only care about watching the entire game of the Texans, which is on regular TV anyway.  As for the rest of the league, I'm happy to flip over to RZ and have them catch me up on what's going on around the league.  It's much more convenient then flipping through the live broadcast of each game in hopes I'll see something fun.

If I lived anywhere but Houston and wanted to be able to watch every Texans game, obviously Sunday Ticket would be more desirable than the Red Zone channel.  But I don't, so I don't really give a fuck about Sunday Ticket.

Since I don't live in Houston, Sunday Ticket is enough on it's own to make me love DirecTV, but

I personally don't believe that you can tell a picture quality difference under normal viewing conditions. I do have minor storm issues but not bad - had many more problems with Time Warner, who I despise.

My colleague who has Uverse has had no end of problems with his setup, which are invariably blamed on bad last mile connection by ATT, but I realize N=1 samples aren't the best way to evaluate.

Really?  Comcast has never fucked up installing cables in your house?  Really?

To date, I have had cable installed at 7 residences.  Not once has the installation been fucked up.  My beef with Comcast is that they offer(ed) me a hobbled service while charging me the same price as those getting the full service.  Until the AnyRoom DVR service gets switched on, this is still the case.  Post-installation service with the 4 cable providers I have used has been variable, with Comcast being the best of a very bad bunch thus far.

So your aversion is not about bolting it to your house then.

The utility connections to my house are all buried.  I do not want a dish on a pole messing with the aesthetics.  Also, I'm not sure where a dish on a pole could be placed and still get an uninterrupted southern exposure.

My colleague who has Uverse has had no end of problems with his setup, which are invariably blamed on bad last mile connection by ATT, but I realize N=1 samples aren't the best way to evaluate.

Because they are jamming a shit-load of bandwidth down old copper phone lines, U-Verse is very susceptible to signal degradation over distance.  It falls of incredibly fast even over as little as a few hundred yards.  I have read advice that suggests you have the installer check the signal strength before he does anything else and, if it's not up to snuff (I will have to look up the value again), you tell him thanks but to pack his shit and go.  I will be doing this for sure.  I am presuming that I am very late to the U-Verse party because my street is a remote spur off a remote spur of a phone line.

AT&T, of course, will be happy to install their service regardless of the signal strength, and then "blame the bad last mile".  Why do they care?  They probably have you locked into a contract that you can't get out of.

Because I cannot get the service currently, their site won't let me look at package options.  Comcast are offering a good 2-year deal, but I'm not locking myself in to either at least until I know that I can get the options I want.

I have found.  My personal experience.  I don't give a flying fuck if you want to watch Sunday Ticket, BBC America HD, or 3-D Spankamax.

DirectTV has to have a southern facing exposure? Pity.

Yes, but at our latitude, the dish points at about 58 degrees, so it's damn hard not to be able to get a signal unless you put the dish right up against a 40 story building.

Also, I'm not sure where a dish on a pole could be placed and still get an uninterrupted southern exposure.

You don't have to be able to see the horizon, you just have to point in the southerly direction.  The satellites are pretty high in the sky.  I live in a freakin' forest and have no trouble getting a signal over the pine trees.

FYI, if you are having rainouts with a satellite-based provider, you can just get a bigger dish.  Guess what?  All of the cable companies receive their programming via giant satellite dishes.  If you don't care about aesthetics, get a bigger dish.

Link is no more risque than a bra ad you'd see in a Sears catalogue.  G4's a mostly worthless channel that shows old episodes of Cops most of the day, but has a mildly entertaining technogeek news show co-hosted every evening by Ms. Bailey.

Googled "g4 directv" and found out that it's been a couple of years since they dropped the channel.

For me, programming is by far the deciding factor. If there is something I want to watch (NFL sunday ticket, stanford sports) that I can't get on a service, I really don't care about the other stuff. I'm sure there is stuff (like g4) that DirecTV doesn't have, but nothing that I've ever wanted to watch.

Until recently on demand programming would've been a differentiator, but DirecTV has caught up in that.

The last thing I want to do is go through with switching, only to find I've still got gimpy Astros coverage.  Here's my confusion, and I'm hoping someone who has DirecTV can point me in the right direction:

I'm in the process of ordering, but I can't tell if the package I've selected (circled) is going to be adequate, or do I need to order the one on the far right (much more expensive) which seems to have an additional FSSW channel? Screenshot.

(ETA: The actual title of the ordering page is "English Packages," which totally made me think of Limey.  NTTAWWT.

Of those packages, only premier is going to be adequate. However, you can just add the sports package to whatever you choose for like $5/month and get them all that way.

I was at the exact point you are at now.  I concluded, based on my research and discussions here, that the extra channel available on the most expensive package is not needed to get the Astros, and I therefore chose the choice plus for other programming reasons.  However, I obviously could be wrong. I will know tomorrow.

If you do order, I'd recommend complete online ordering.  I called the number for a question and ended up ordering over the phone.  Let's just say they can easily raise the level of their order takers.

You need FS-HOU to see the astros - it may come in the more basic package if you are in the territory, I don't know. I would just get the basic package and see if it works (you can easily add the sports package later).

I think this is correct.  If you're in Houston, you're fine with the basic package.  If you're in Rangers territory, you might be screwed.

Yeah, I assumed he was in the Houston viewing area, but if not, it might take a higher tiered package.  Or you could do what I do for the "ranch"...get a box programmed for the Houston area and take it with you to Rangers territory.

Judging by what is offered in the sports packages or higher tier package (multiple Comcast channels and NBC Sports), I'd be damn surprised if one can't get the new channel on Direct TV next year.  That assumption helped solidify my decision over UVerse.

It just depends on what the Astros try and do with it - no reason it couldn't go the way of the Longhorn Network.

Could be, but all those other Regional Comcast Networks are already there.  Plus, NBC owns a substantial bit of the company (although I'm not sure how that helps, just seems like it might).  I just assume the Rockets/Astros network will be bundled with the rest of the Comcast networks.  The difference between that situation and the Longhorn Network is that the Longhorn Network is way less than the other ESPN channels and therefore harder to bundle, whereas the Comcast networks are relatively equal and easier to bundle.

Yup, blame the bullshit regional agreements that Bud Selig has sworn to fix for years and the recent Rangers upswing.   Of course, Drayton didn't seem to give a shit about marketing outside the city, and he seems to have underestimated the amount of frontrunners in San Antonio and Austin (a dangerous thing to do in places with a lot of Cowboys fans).  Perhaps the new ownership will actually attempt to rectify this.

I have the Total Choice package, DTV says it"s the same as the Choice Xtra just an old package that was a lower price. I live about halfway between SA and CC and get the CC feed. I don't have any sport packages and get every game thats not blocked by Fox or that MyFox channel, this is a few Sat. and Sun games. If it's broadcast in HD I get HD. They're are mostly broadcast on FSH, occasionally on FSSW and sometimes both. FSH shows all the Houston teams and a bunch of college sports. It doesn't show something 24/7, just sports events and music.

FYI the dish doesn't have to be mounted up in the air. I have one mounted on a tire rim that I use to travel. I have no problem with signal even up here in the Piney Woods. I can hide it behind a bush and no one knows its there, a whole lot less intrusive than an A/C unit.

Ordered. Choice Xtra. Guess we're in the same wait-and-see boat now.

I'm also interested in what your total television and internet bill was before and will be after the switch.   It appears it's a price decrease for 12 months, but then DirecTV becomes more expensive.

I can say this...in 14 years, my DirecTV subscription rate has never increased.

Plus if you call them up and bitch often they will reduce your rate - I got Sunday Ticket more than half off this year despite still being under contract (6 months left or so)

Basically, in the first twelve months, there are rebates you can send in to reduce your bill.

Also, their 24 month price schedule assumes you continue with HBO, etc after the three month period in which it is free.

Anyone in Austin get the Astros tonight?  If so, what carrier?

TWC-Austin put the Spurs on FSSW and the Rangers on the alternate 77.

I guess I don't understand the people who complain about DirecTV losing its signal in a thread where we are comparing it to cable.  I had cable from probably 1982 to around 2005. I have had DirecTV since then.  Cable went out on a much much greater frequency than Satellite does, probably by a factor of 10.  And when the cable goes out, you sit there with your fingers crossed hoping it comes back on.  With DirecTV, if I lose the signal I can pretty much look at the window and know when it is coming back on.  Reliability of service is the #1 reason I like satellite more than cable.

As for NFL Package, I have had it for a few years and it is a waste for me.  80% of games are on at the same time, so it isn't like I get to watch a bunch of games, at the noon time slot I either watch the Texans or the RedZone channel.  I do like NFL package for the late games when there is only 4 to chose from and it is easy to flip back and forth.   I really wish the NFL would space out the games better.  Start some East Coast games at 11 EST then some at 12:30 EST, the Central time zone games at 2 and 3 EST, then do something similar to the West Coast games.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

I think it really depends on who your carrier is, where you live, and how old all of the wiring is from point A to point B.  Since getting married, both of the apartments we've lived in were built in the mid-90s in non-ancient neighborhoods.  In almost six years our cable has not completely gone out even once.  Any problems we've had have been strictly device-related (one cable modem failed last summer, one DVR failed a few years ago) or Time Warner accounting incompetence (when I called to cancel our movie package, they accidentally deactivated our Internet service).

I realize that I'm apparently the statistical outlier (and on other forums I've been accused of being a Time Warner employee/shareholder), but it's hard for me to give up the reliability we've had for a service that will probably go out every now and then.

It's not listed, but last night's Ranger game wasn't listed either, and it was broadcast on Ch. 77.

Austin Culturemap had this (apparently incorrect) blurb in a recent article:

Quote
Therefore, when you tune in Fox Southwest during baseball season within the next few days, more than likely you’ll see the Houston Astros even though we know only a few of their names (Carlos Lee, Wandy Rodriguez, and Chris Johnson). You’ll have to look elsewhere for the Rangers.

“The Austin area is, is considered a home market for the Astros, but when those games are on Fox SW and the Rangers are playing at the same time, then the Rangers game will be on Channel 77 [in Austin],” says Melissa Sorola, regional communications director for Time Warner Cable.

Interesting.  Nice to know.  I was going through the guide and hitting enter.

remy, you will get the games with the choice plus package without having to order the extra sports package.  I'm done with TWC.  Don't even care enough to tell Melissa that she is sadly mistaken.

How did the conversation go for you with TWC when you called to cancel?

It's not on 678-1? If that's true it probably means you need the sports pack

TWC, Biz... I don't mind getting bumped for the Spurs, as it's the stretch toward the playoffs and there are as many people that want to watch the Spurs as the Astros, I'm guess, if not more, BUT... Ch. 77 is ALSO showing the Spurs. What. The. Fuck.

What happens next year when the Astros share their network with the Rockets? They do play the same night a few times. Will I get less Astros when they have their own network?

Sorry, was thinking you were in the group switching to DTV

Maybe it's for people who don't want to watch the spurs in HD

One night during the Rockies series it was Spurs on 1639, and Spurs en Espanol on 77.  Fuck Time Warner.

Haven't canceled yet.  I assume I pay until they get their boxes and I can't get those to them until Friday.  Maybe that's not true, but it is just three days of overlap. Installation was a fiasco, but it is done now and the Astros are on with a pretty sharp picture.

No, no, no... I'm appreciating the finery of the remote's many features, one of which is the quicktune thingie that allows me to jump straight to 4 digit channels with fucking dashes in them. When I was whatever age you have mistaken me for, it took me less time to get up, walk over and turn the knob from 26 to 39 than it does for me to manually punch in the elaborate code required for the regional HD networks. Don't they know I've been drinking?

Also, relevant.

I believe for the first time on Time Warner Cable in 2012, the Astros are on 1639 HD and the Rangers are on the alternate channel 77.  Yesterday, the Astros were on 1630 HD and the Rangers weren't on anywhere.  Maybe enough people complained.
