2012 NCAA Tournament Thread
« on: March 15, 2012, 05:10:48 pm »
UNC-Asheville just outplayed Syracuse.  Unfortunately, the referees had Syracuse on the money line, with some of the most egregiously bad calls down the stretch you could ever hope to see.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

Syracuse = Worse #1 seed ever! (even though Melo being suspended doesn't help)

Even worse than the exhibitions in last weekend's ACC tournament?

I'm talking '72 US-USSR bad.  Gregg's strike zone in 97 Braves-Marlins bad.

I told a longhorn friend of mine that Cincy was the worse matchup they could have hoped for. She replied that the young horns could surprise. I said "The part about being young is eggszactly why this was a bad matchup for them. The Bearkats will run them off the court if they show any instability".

BTW - for the fifth year in a row, I've chosen Gonzaga to get eliminated in the first round. You'd think I'd learn by now. My bracket took a huge hit again because of my stubborness.

The ESPN play-by-play isn't very flattering for J'Covan Brown. Lots of "J'Covan Brown Turnover", "J'Covan Brown missed Jumper", "J'Covan Brown missed Layup", and "J'Covan Brown missed Three-Point Jumper" entries. Looks like Chapman must have played hard, though.

How did it handle McLellan(?)'s self-stuffed dunk attempt towards the end?

Yes.. and I believe the same gentleman attempted a 3 a few moments later and hit nothing but board.  Both incidents were painful to watch, even as a non-fan.

no. he let a defender distract him. Kabongo rebounded the miss, and Chapman made 2 FTs so the missed dunk did not hurt anything but McClellan's pride.

ETA: the game was a microcosm of the season: get WAY down, make a heroic comeback, get in position to win, play fucking stupid down the stretch. JCB's fumble, then two rushed, early, unnecessary 3s turned a tie into a 6 point deficit in three possessions.

Think it's best if JCB foregoes his senior season?  It's fun watching him play but two things bug me.  Not sure if this is RB's intent but he disappears quite a bit during large parts of games.  Also, his decision making in clutch moments has really sucked.  Without him the team will stuggle on offense but someone else may step up and lead the team.

I can't imagine him getting drafted in either round. He really needs another year to demonstrate that he can cut down the turnovers and make an occasional shot. Without that, he's just another guy.

Thpought the same about Corey Joseph last year.  Was probably right since he's playing for the Toros now.

JCB has family issues that likely will cause him to leave. as great as he played at times, he still drove me batty.

i do not care if Kabongo leaves.

Sic 'em.  They sure tried to throw it away, though.  Will be interesting to see if the Hoosiers can put up a fight tonight.

If Baylor can consistently play anywhere near the way they did the first 10 mins of the first half tonight, things could get interesting.

"The homepage on my web browser is Yahoo, which I'm told it shouldn't be, but I've just been too lazy to change it," he [Aaron Sorkin] says. Oh. He redeems himself slightly, however, with this line: "From time to time I'll read some of the comments under stories on it to get a sense of what it must be like at a Klan meeting."

One of the SXSW Interactive panels I attended was on the failure of comments. Essentially, the 'industry' knows it's a colossal failure but they don't know how to fix it. The Spaceman has pretty much turned it off, claiming it is a problem with their software.

For the online news industry, comments are clicks which it desperately needs. No one wants to do away with them, or regulate them.

I remember reading an article recently on that panel.  I thought I recalled some sliver of hope in there, but can't recall the details of the sliver.  I wonder if sophisticated software could be used to clean up a lot of the crap.  It could probably recognize a lot of the low-life comments, delete them and the user, and generally make life difficult for the worst commenters.

Exactly. It was designed in part for that, and in part to build a community that would return. Instead, they got a freak show community that is more damaging than they could've imagined.

What I took away from it was that there are some ideas for remedies, but none of them apply to everyone and realistically they don't know how to fix it without breaking it severely or killing it.

The only comments section I've ever found worth reading is the AV Club.  It's usually extremely snarky (and funny), but nothing like the chron or espn or whatever.
Don't think twice, it's alright.

It works much the same from the other direction, too.

This.  I was literally laughing out loud at the comments about Sunday's episode of Mad Men.

One of the SXSW Interactive panels I attended was on the failure of comments. Essentially, the 'industry' knows it's a colossal failure but they don't know how to fix it. The Spaceman has pretty much turned it off, claiming it is a problem with their software.

What is 'The Spaceman'?

There are lots of blog comment sections which are valuable, but I'm guessing that's a combination of a smaller audience and the owner of the blog is usually an individual which gives a shit what gets posted on his blog.

Sorry. Spaceman=Statesman. Similarly, the Star-Telegram is the Startlegram, Express-News the Distress-News and so forth. Press lingo.

Is anyone taking the angle of why isn't she on the olympic team?

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/olympics/2009-08-19-semenya-gender-test_N.htm
There's still one spot open on the team, I believe.  The first 11 selected were all current WNBA players.  I think it might be more appropriate for that spot to go to a college player who has used up her eligibility, but it's not my call; it's that of the two governing bodies managing the selection process before TO'ing it to the Olympic Committee.

I wouldn't be too surprised if Griner were their choice, though; she's kind of an attention getter, even if a lot of said attention is at a minimum uncivil.

I just wondered if anyone was taking that tactless tact.

In a similar vein, Alan Sepinwall's comments often feature interesting/compelling takes. And he doesn't put up with shit.

Couldn't let this one get Morgan Ensberged... well played, dude. Sorkin's dig at the BBS community (not that all are created equal) rubbed me slightly the wrong way, but it did amuse me seasons later when John Wells essentially repeated the gag with bloggers instead of message board users (Josh crashed a Hummer during a test drive, and someone's cell phone camera documentation found its way to a blog almost immediately, resulting in a presidential blue ribbon committee on alternative energy or somesuch).
