Informal Baseball fan survey
« on: December 06, 2011, 01:25:02 pm »
Guy is checking out ahead of me at HEB--he works at HEB and is going home. He's telling the cashier and another HEB employee that his girlfriend is pregnant. The cashier surprises me by asking him, "why didn't you pull it out, you didn't nut in her did you?" He says, "naw it wasn't like that, we wanted to have a kid." Pretty candid conversation to have in public and me literally just trying to buy milk, beer, and diapers. Well, I notice that the guy has an Astros wallet so I figure if he's willing to discuss where and whys of his ejaculations maybe he'll discuss baseball.
So I ask if he's an Astros fan. He looks at the wallet and says, "yeah, yeah I am even though they really suck right now." He's defensive, maybe I am about to say something shitty about the team. I tell him that I love them too and I ask  what he thinks about the move to the AL. He didn't know it had happened. He asks what division they're joining. He thinks its cool that they'll have the Rangers as a rival. Then he tells me how he really feels:" And now we'll have the DH."
I have had many conversations with locals about the Astros. Not one has known or cared at all about the move to the AL. The second most common sentiment is that it will be fun to see them play the Yankees. Of course, none of them will ever actually see one of these games because local Yankee fans will buy the tickets long in advance. The most common response is to change the subject and talk about football.

We must be talking to the same people.  Simply starting the conversation triggers a fight of flight moment for some folks.

If AD has regulars, I doubt that they work. I bet AD postings drop when the libraries close.

The Texans and UH have consumed all of the sports oxygen in the room and the MMPUS record for lowest season attendance has 2012 written all over it.

Breaking Astros relevant news: Mariners frontrunner for Fielder per Jim Bowden tweet.

I just can't bring myself to care.  I'm far more interested in Pujols schadenfreude.  Breaking my NL habit is going to be harder than anticipated.

I'm just waiting for somebody to give Pujols 10 years so that I can watch them piss away $22MM+/year for the last 6 years of that contract. It will be even more amusing than watching the Cubs suffer for "winning" the Soriano sweepstakes.

Next year's Marlins fire sale (post-World Championship) will be fun.

Aren't they getting a new downtown stadium some time soon?  That should stabilize their payroll a bit.

Regardless, it's hard to argue with the results.

From the other side of things, all the Angels fans I know think its good to get another team in the West, especially one that they consider to be awful and weak.  Also with only 4 teams in that division people get bored seeing the same teams so often.

New stadium solves everything.

The difference is that the Marlins occasionally put a competitive team on the field.  The problem with the old stadium is that it takes an hour to get to and it rains every night in the summer.  The location improvement has the potential to be significant for the Marlins, much more so than merely the facility improvement.

The Marlins are going to be good and if the revenues rise as expected there is no reason to think that with a competent FO they can't stay good if they want to.

The Marlins are being investigated by the Feds for bribery, Loria has never shown a willingness to spend like this before, and new stadia have pretty well proven to only increase revenues in a 1-2 year span.

Now they're offering 6 years for CJ Wilson.  This will be another fire sale before the 2014 season starts.  Bank on it.

Not a huge fan of Miami's uniforms, but at least the organization opted for something slightly more unique than the highly market researched, consulted, brand-tested logos/color schemes of the Astros, Rays, DBacks, Milwakee, San Diego, etc.
