I miss the Clarks
« on: September 28, 2011, 12:40:11 pm »
This place was more exciting with fresh blood in the water.  I, for one, would be willing to put up with a little spam in order to bring the Clarks back.

Anyone else feel that way?

Or put up with spam threads.  But really, how onerous is that?  I still like seeing Clarks around.

It gets out of control quick, especially disgusting porn spam. I used to manage a forum and would just delete the bad registration (and would be willing to help do that if that could work), but its more annoying than you think.

I personally like to get more Astro fans in here, but spam management sucks balls.

Shaggy has it set up so that a user cant create a new thread until they posted some number in existing threads first.  That seems to be a reasonable approach as spam bots generally want to create new threads.

I've seen enough evidence to think that they're pretty happy to post in existing threads, too.

The clark-bashing was one of the least appealing aspects of this site. The last thing this community needs after this season is another dose of negativity like that. It was a pretty effective way of keeping out the riffraff, sure, but god damn did it get tiresome. Two close friends of mine, both of whom would make better contributors than I, were completely turned off the site by how they saw new members being treated. It may have been meant to drive away the ones who talked out of their asses, but in practice it was more like dumbshit frat boy hazing. This isn't directed at anyone in particular, and I'm not excepting myself–I mouthed off at clarks without good reason along with most everyone else. It's just been refreshing not to see that kind of crap going on anymore.

I've had a friend who dropped by here tell me something similar.  I think that we might lose some potentially decent posters by virtue of the Clark vitriol, but by the same token this is our damned clubhouse and we can run it how we want.  I'd like to re-open registration again, but I'm not one of the ones who has to deal with cleanup.  I'd be happy to help with that process if necessary.

I have to say that I've never witnessed any bashing that wasn't deserved. I think some have a different idea of what bashing is and have a hard time with that. Kev and Scott used to say "bring it strong or don't bring it at all" and I think that still embodies the Spikes aspect of this site.

New posters need to prove that they aren't going to just shit all over the site, no matter how knowledgeable or witty they are. If you want to call that initiation then fine. But I've seen the bad side of Clarkism and I'd hate for this community to go that direction.

All that said, I'd love to see some new posters.

Seeing as most everyone who has posted in this thread (with the exception of Jim, who I think was posting at AC before I found it) has had to go through being a Clark (even before such a thing existed) it is possible to become something more than a Clark.  But it's not easy.

I'm all for opening up registrations again, but I have no idea what we would be able to get with the current state of the team, and the corresponding level of "fans".

It's possible we might get actual fans, since this season has probably provided the necessary impetus to send the bandwagoners off to Arlington. Of course, I've been wrong a time or two in my life.

Spam bots can post into existing threads. Those are actually harder to clean out with most software, as you have to delete specific posts from a useful thread, as opposed to nuking the entire thread.

I still consider myself one of the newer posters on this site, but I just checked and saw a registration date of April 2008 (not sure if that was the rollover date from OWA or my actual log-in date, but whatever).  Point is, if you keep your mouth shut and respect those who have vastly more knowledge about the team and the game, you'll be alright.  Sure, I changed my avatar to a horse's ass once - once - but I think it was MM who called me on my bullshit.

Not everybody's a VOR or LOE or any of the countless others who couldn't handle it.  Some are like me, so please, for the love of Billy Spiers, keep it closed.

I, for one, would be willing to put up with a little spam in order to bring the Clarks back.

The admins are not.  We were getting as many as 50-100 spam account registrations a day.  That gets annoying REAL quick.  And even after having registration disabled for a while and then turning it back on, the spam accounts started coming in almost instantly.

Once we hit The Void I'm going to tackle some software upgrades that will hopefully at least make it tolerable to have registration turned on.

My philosophy as well (i.e., read more, post less). If newer posters would just take it to heart they'd ease into the site much better.

My first two weeks were utter hell.  And I loved it, because it gave me a chance to practice my skeels at shooting back... not run away or cry about being mistreated.  In fact, most of the ones who jumped on me first left the site after several weeks because of.... wait for it... being mistreated (or so they said).

Spam bots can post into existing threads. Those are actually harder to clean out with most software, as you have to delete specific posts from a useful thread, as opposed to nuking the entire thread.

Yup.  Not easy to manage.

So help me understand: is the call being made to allow Clarks in here to get bashed daily so you can have fun or to allow Clarks in here because we could use more intelligent conversation about the team?  If the latter, then invite your friends and family and send the admins a note asking them to be registered.  It's the best way right now to get new blood in here: recruit.

On the first part, can't help you with that one, you'll have to go find another site somewhere to play "smash the pumpkin" with Clarks (what was it called, Frat Boy stuff?  Eggszactly!)

I've been afraid to recruit for a couple of reasons. One, because I came in when Rob Neyer wrote about AC and I remember the grumbling about all those new goobers (like me) that were driven to the site by the New Visibility and Two, because nobody I know needs to learn about most of the stuff I let fly in here. It took a long time to get these walls up and there's damn few folks who get to come in the guarded entrance.
I'm in love with rock and roll and I'll be out all night.

What I'm hearing is they want it like it used to be, before spambots. New blood comes in and gets weeded out. The strong stick around. The former comes with the latter...or something.

We need a minor leagues then.  A sort of Kissimmee SnS, let all the spambots and Clarks (and you all) live there whilest the strong get weeded out and promoted here and the others either stay in extended spring training or go work at Burger King for a living.

Like I said, say the word and we will set up a sister site for "fight like hell" nights and let the weeding begin... until we can figure out the spambots disinfection thingy.

no.

A separate forum full of lice and Clarks (whichever comes first) so that there is an equal amount of fun and management to be done.  Both in terms of clarks and lice.

Y'all can have all the fun you want "graduatin'" folks over here once they are deloused.  A sort of Ellis Island for SnS if you will.

I’m still, and probably always will be, a Clark so to appease your desire for Clark-blood I’ll provide the bait.

Hunter Pence rulz!!!!  Ed Wade sux and again proved it by trading my boy to the Phillies, a real team, for nothing.  How many times are the Phils going to hose us?

Who does this “Jim” guy think he is telling me to observe a pitcher’s motion, a batter’s swing, or a fielder’s footwork when ERA, batting average, and zone rating tell me all that I need to know?

Moving to the American League will be *awesome* because we can see the Sawks and Yanks every year, we get a natural rivalry with the Rangers, and, best of all, we finally get to dump bunting strategy for DH power!  It's not like the Astros have a history in the National League or anything.

Billy Spiers is not omnipotent.

You’re welcome.  I’m available to participate in strosrays’ (someone else’s?) 10-point Clark posting destruction upon request.

Just one dipshit's two cents here:

New blood is always good. I'd hate to see any kind of Clark Island, in part because I'm too much of an elitist prick to even bother going over there to see who's making sense and who's showing their ass. Just throw them in with the general population. Like Ty said, weeds and sticking and all that.

The real burden falls on Waldo – poor son of a bitch – who has to upgrade the forum to something a bit more spam-resistant without breaking the shit out of it, while all of you assholes keep posting at all times of the day and night. This sucks. I'm game to help if you want/need it, just shoot me a note.

And for the apparently numerous lurkers who are reading while Lurch stalks them... fucking post, people. It's not so bad. Saf used a smiley – A FUCKING SMILEY – and was neither beaten nor verbally savaged and lit ablaze. As far as we know. Mark may have, I'm not sure. Just get in there and see what happens.

It might be easier to have a board section parallel to "General Discussion" where anyone can post, but you have to be approved to post in "General Discussion". Some sort of intro post, just to prove your human. Once you prove you are human an admin could grant you normal access to the "General Discussion" section. That can be done w/ most bbs software via user groups.

I can only speak for myself not any other lurkers, but I frequent this site for several reasons.

I originally found this site searching for Astros minor league information.  That was right before OWA got kicked off.   I found just what I was looking for with some great minor league season reviews.  From there I read some of coaches From the Dugout.  Was some good stuff too.

Not long after, OWA was launched.   Still, I didn’t jump right in to posting.  After awhile I started posting with a little frequency…but I really came for the content.

Not long after this my job duties changed and I found I had very little time to post, much less search the internet to follow the Astros happenings.  I still come here to follow things such as the Crane saga.  Y’all keep me informed, while still remaining productive at work.  Yea for you!

When I get home, I have two young kids that want to spend time with me.  They still think dad is cool, smart…etc.  My oldest just started softball and most evenings after work she wants to throw the ball.  I love it!

So yes I do owe some of y’all thanks.

I don’t come here for the clark smashing but my coonass curiosity can’t stop looking at the trainwreck.

So there's a sub-group of weirdos silently watching and apparently recording our every move. I now feel more discomfited than usual.

And an even smaller sub-group of the truly fucked up who enjoy being watched.  I think they all moved to New York.

I can only speak for myself not any other lurkers, but I frequent this site for several reasons.

This is pretty much me as well, including the two (very young) children that keep me away from the site other than at the office. I come here for the news and clearheaded perspective on things, and this thread is good motivation for getting more involved even if it's nothing more than to say thanks for all of the content. Need to shake off a bit of rust, though, as I had to use the username/password retriever to even find my credentials.

Same here, plus a job change and I still manage to post! Want a tissue you jack-a-nanny?  Pick up the pace you losers!  (that's the best R. Lee Ermey impression I can offer...)

Seriously, I post less because, more often than not, my posts suck.  Also, it's easier to read the thread and if I find someone already voiced the opinion I would offer I can simply go back to work.  I am not a fan of the Clark take-downs, with a few exceptions. Towlie was and forever shall be, a thing of beauty, self-inflicted variety.  Oh, and Mr. 3%, of course.  I'm not a clark, based on post count, but consider myself a Clark none the less.

I just checked and have been around since '07.  The main reason I don't post is - every time I tried to login, I got an error message saying something about my cookie settings.  I'm pretty computer retarted and just continued to post less.  I got a friend to fix it when I saw this thread and here I am.  I think this is the best site out there and I really feel like I'm a better / more informed Astros fan because of this place.  It's nice for me since I've been out of Houston since 1999.

I also tend to get pretty drunk and say some really stupid shit.

You know what I miss?  it's not the Clarks, particularly, it's the thread steals.  It used to be great fun watching a thread about Derrick Bell veer into a thread about Alyssa Milano and then veer into a thread about barbecued shrimp.  Beer and Queso is fine, but we lose a lot of great and random thread steals.

I do think when I started, things were a bit kinder on the board.  One could say something stupid and then learn something.  I still recall fondly a great conversation with HH about left-handed catchers, probably 11 years ago.  Those conversations don't happen much anymore, and it's a loss.

I think there are more and more people who say something stupid and defend it til death. That's what makes the board as harsh as it is.

I'd probably agree with this.  There are no stupid questions.  The stupidity comes from defending your idea to the point of ridicule when it's clearly as dumb as the day is long.  I remember Limey once asking about the infield fly rule.  He was newer to the game than most of us and was unclear on something.  He asked.  He got an answer.  He is smarter because of it.  Similarly, I got into it with Ray K on the the exact same subject.  He wasn't trying to gain information, he was trying convince me that it was arbitrary and pointless.  That was pure stupidity.

for some reason this whole season has been off.  maybe it is lack of clarks in the mix. i mean between dumping the baseball god known as pence and basically finishing with better play with the corpus..um future astro all stars. the the whole debunckle  of selling the team not selling the team going to al and listening to people who had no ideal that you can rebuild a team in a few years with the right management and ownership (miami marlins)
which is not currently in play sadly. its like waiting for the birth of a new child , you never know how he or she will turn out but you need to give the the best bringing up possible

... fucking post, people.

Challenge accepted.

I'm one of those creepy lurkers that's on the site almost daily.  I like the fact that any/all relevant Stros news is usually posted within seconds of circulation, with insightful commentary from people who actually know a thing or two about the game... and for the most part, y'all are some humorous motherfuckers.

I don't post much because 1) I'm pretty busy with work & law school, and 2) I have taken the "read more, post less" rule to heart (maybe a bit overboard, yes). It's just that, typically, if I think I have something worth a shit to contribute, I find that someone has already beaten me to the punch.

I'll start posting up more often.  I can take the clarkie-whippin' like a man.

Thinking about it, I wouldn't have wanted to put up with Clarks this season.  I saw enough of them at MMPUS.  I doubt there will be a lot of them anyway until there's a winning season.  That gives Waldo 4 years to develop anti-spambot technology.

Because, in the early days, the fucker lived on here.

I actually was just thinking the other day how wildly different my life is since I started posting at AC.   To call that a lifetime ago is somewhat of an understatement.

I can't believe how much time and how little responsibility I had.

I can take the clarkie-whippin' like a man.

as many know, i met him and watched a game with him once. he was really a nice guy but was wound tighter than anyone i knew/know. he exhausted me with his contant movement and comments on virtually every pitch. he was a very knowledgeable baseball fan. i have a photo of him, Texas Rascal and me if anyone is interested.

The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

I pictured him as Yosemite Sam; red-faced and spluttering, powerless to affect what concerned him most. It seemed comical to me and made me laugh. When he showed ill will, I did not see malice but frustration. I thought he was basically a good guy who had an interestingly different perspective and a unique means of expression. If for nothing else, he should be honored for his contribution to the BFT/AC/OWA/SNS vernacular.

The worst thing about HD was that he railed anonymously about all of us being Bushneck Lackeys - all the while living off an Enron salary.  It explains the unfocused rage, but doesn't explain why he didn't quit and go somewhere else.  He was right about what he said about the fraud in the Houston economy of the time, but that was because he had an inside view that no one else here had.  The day he was outed (in the NY Times, IIRC), numerous pennies dropped.

I wasn't going to post his real name, if you don't know it.

I don't remember it, but I guess I could find out if I really wanted to.

You can search for his name

I read a few of those.  Didn't even seem like it was the same person - polite, hard working, and used proper capitalization.  That he knowingly threw away his job just because he couldn't wait to get home to post on Yahoo only adds to the enigma.

CAUTION:  We are getting dangerously close to the line in this thread.  First, for all the schadenfreude we felt when HD was outed, it is impious to exult over the slain.  Secondly, while I understand we're discussing his former employment, I don't much care for discussing peoples' working livelihoods in this manner.  It's callous, if not potentially slanderous.

I think we'd better nip this right here.

Slanderous would mean statements made as if they were factual, but turns out are not, that damage someone's reputation, personal or professional.

I'm trying to say that discussing peoples' private lives, without their consent, bothers me...fun as it may be.

So a post indicating that you enjoy wearing women's undergarments while tending to your 25 acres would be in bad form?

It's only bad form if you imply he's drinking the wrong bourbon.

It may have been meant to drive away the ones who talked out of their asses, but in practice it was more like dumbshit frat boy hazing.

very well said...moriartp..
Remember Jesus Alou being called out of the 1st base coaching box to pinch-hit a double vs. the Reds in '79 I think, to win a crucial game, and he patted Morgan on top of the head (ala Benny Hill w/the little bald guy) and Little Joe got pissed.....yeah,that was great.
