Those first 5 stand a very good chance of being in the starting lineup in April.

I was about to say I think you can replace Corporan with someone else whose surname begins with a C and you'll be looking at the starters for the team's fourth game of the year.

Why? BW can't hit for power and CJ is a clank at the hot corner. I don't see either one getting a September call up. I love Paredes. He's raw but is springing with talent.

Well, I used to be a farmer and I made a living fine
I had a little stretch of land along the C. P. line
But times got tough, and though I tried, the money wasn't there
The bankers came and took my land and told me, "Fair is fair"
I looked for every kind of job, the answer always no
"Hire you now?" they'd always laugh, "We just let twenty go!" (Ha ha!)
The government, they promised me a measly little sum
But I've got too much pride to end up just another bum
Then I thought, who gives a damn if all the jobs are gone
I'm gonna be a pirate on the river Saskatchewan! (Arr!)

Re: Bogusevic

I don't pay enough attention, but was he expected to hit as well as he has now that he is playing?  I am surprised by him, maybe because he went pitcher-to-position player.  Not many guys do.  Usually it's a light-hitting position player with a good arm that is switched to pitcher.

I'm pretty mysterious around here if you want to know the truth. The locals will often stop what they're doing to watch me do whatever I'm doing. Especially at home. Hey Hector, take a gander at yon gringo with a machete! Wait, he's climbing up a tree? Oh, this'll be good!

I'm gratified to return the favor in my own small way. Every day I see them doing things that make me stop and ask (foolishly) What the FUCK are you doing? On two consecutive days recently I saw a fellow access a tall roof he was repairing by placing his ladder on the roof of an old Toyota. The next day I saw an unattended ladder leaning up against power cables squarely in between the nearest poles, basically at the nadir of the cables' droop. I assume the ladder was unattended because every guy who'd been sent up there was electrocuted.

Bogusevic hit fairly well at Tulane. He played in the field when he wasn't pitching.

The Sea and the Hills by Rudyard Kipling

Who hath desired the Sea? — the sight of salt water unbounded –
The heave and the halt and the hurl and the crash of the comber wind-hounded?
The sleek-barrelled swell before storm, grey, foamless, enormous, and growing –
Stark calm on the lap of the Line or the crazy-eyed hurricane blowing –
His Sea in no showing the same his Sea and the same ‘neath each showing:
His Sea as she slackens or thrills?
So and no otherwise — so and no otherwise — hillmen desire their Hills!

Who hath desired the Sea? — the immense and contemptuous surges?
The shudder, the stumble, the swerve, as the star-stabbing bow-sprit emerges?
The orderly clouds of the Trades, the ridged, roaring sapphire thereunder –
Unheralded cliff-haunting flaws and the headsail’s low-volleying thunder –
His Sea in no wonder the same his Sea and the same through each wonder:
His Sea as she rages or stills?
So and no otherwise — so and no otherwise — hillmen desire their Hills.

Who hath desired the Sea? Her menaces swift as her mercies?
The in-rolling walls of the fog and the silver-winged breeze that disperses?
The unstable mined berg going South and the calvings and groans that declare it –
White water half-guessed overside and the moon breaking timely to bare it –
His Sea as his fathers have dared — his Sea as his children shall dare it:
His Sea as she serves him or kills?
So and no otherwise — so and no otherwise — hillmen desire their Hills.

Who hath desired the Sea? Her excellent loneliness rather
Than forecourts of kings, and her outermost pits than the streets where men gather
Inland, among dust, under trees — inland where the slayer may slay him –
Inland, out of reach of her arms, and the bosom whereon he must lay him
His Sea from the first that betrayed — at the last that shall never betray him:
His Sea that his being fulfils?
So and no otherwise — so and no otherwise — hillmen desire their Hills.

The 1970 Big Red Machine had Woody Woodward and Darrel Chanet at SS.

And Mickey Stanley was the SS for the 68 Tigers in the WS to get Kaline-Northrup-W Horton in the OF.

It was a good thing to do since Ray Oyler hit .135 in over 200 ABs at SS for the Tigers, who left him unprotected in the 1969 expansion draft and he was selected by the Seattle Pilots.

Yeah, Oyler and Dick Tracewski and Tommy Matchick all played SS during the regular season, and none of them could hit.  The 3B, Don Wert, also a slick fielder, hit exactly .200 with maybe 10 HRs, in close to 500 ABs

Which unbelievably led to two years in the wilderness with Tom Tresh and Cesar Gutierrez until they found Ed Brinkman in a trade for some guy...

I remember that we were able to watch some of that Series in elementary school, they brought out the black and white TVs on those tall carts, put them right in the class room because this was America's Game and it was what you did. It was so cool then, everywhere you went the game was on somebody's radio or somebody's TV. You could walk down a street and follow the game.

Tresh could do everything offensively but hit for average, but his BAs were exceptionally low, even for that era.

Cesar Gutierrez they got from SF, I think.  He couldn't hit at all, but is co-holder of the record for base hits in a nine-inning game.  He went 7-for-7 one magical night.

Of course, Brinkman couldn't hit, either.  Didn't he and Aurelio Rodriguez come from Wash. in exchange for McLain?  I could be mixing together a couple of different trades in my head.

I am going to defend McAuliffe a little.  He should probably have been platooned, but he was a good hitting 2B in an era when there weren't many.  He had power and plate discipline, though he didn't usually hit for a high average.  He hit leadoff year after year on good teams at least partly because of his high OBPs (again, for the era.)  1968 was one of his better years, though.

He also had one of the coolest stances ever.  Kind of similar to Craig Counsell, but much more pronounced.

Also, don't forget Earl Wilson in that rotation.

Yaz held the bat really high, but McAuliffe did it while basically facing the pitcher squarely.  The only guy I've seen close to being that open was that Batista guy with Mets in the 1990s, a 3B who hit a lot of homers for awhile (from the right side.)  But even he wasn't as open as McAuliffe.

I don't see how McAuliffe got around on the ball. The most open stance I've ever seen. I used to imitate it as a kid.

And if I'm remembering correctly, he didn't square his stance up with the pitcher's motion, he stayed open and hit the hell out of the ball.

He squared up and like Yaz brought the bat down once he started his swing.  And had a huge front leg kick, a la Biggio.

He held his hands apart on the bat, too, IIRC.  He was a consistent .250/.350/.400 guy playing middle infield in an extreme pitcher's era.

What a nice slide piece by Wright to finish off Walker. I like the way that Wright is using his fastball more. Few things aggravate me more than the so-called lefty specialist who almost solely relies on that sweeper as his out pitch. Throw some gas.

I wish I'd kept all of them. Just like everybody else, my mother threw out ALL of my football cards - those Jim Browns, Y.A. Tittles, Joe Namath rookie cards, those full freaking sets of AFL cards. As for baseball, I had hundreds of thousands of them. I was a maniac. Now I'm down to a few thousand, maybe 20K or so. Stuck in a box.

I don't have nearly that many.  I only collected seriously for 3-4 years, from ages 9-12 or so, and that is what I have.  I have almost all of 1968, probably 80% of 1970, 75% of 1971.  It wasn't until a few years ago I realized I have the complete Topps 1969 set.  That was one year I really got into it.  The funky 1971 cards were the last year I was serious, that;s when my testicles descended or something kicked in, I gave up cards for other pursuits.  My football cards, from roughly the same years, are spottier.

I'm not sure how some of that happened. I guess there were some friends with older brothers or something, because I had lots of cards going back to 1957 and I didn't start collecting until 1965. We traded a bunch, bought new ones, and many of us were voracious about it. I think my earliest complete set now is probably 1978 but I've got 75% or better of '68-77 and then a lot of 1957-67 with a sprinkling of older cards from 1940-54. I pretty much stopped in the mid 80s, I used to buy sets but it just got stupid. Nowadays I'll buy a pack or two of some design that I like, some vintage reprint thing or whatever.

Lucas is usually pretty accommodating.  He did a pre game with Sosa before his last start and appeared about halfway through to just stop trying to understand the responses he was getting.

It was a good thing to do since Ray Oyler hit .135 in over 200 ABs at SS for the Tigers, who left him unprotected in the 1969 expansion draft and he was selected by the Seattle Pilots.
Ray Oyler was my hero ... something about setting a low bar I guess.  Of course, I hit only a little better than .135 in Little League.
